Wonderful. I was only born in Newcastle but brought up in eyemouth just over the border in Scotland from age 1. But I love Newcastle and it’s history in old photos. A lovely old traditional pub on every corner and a community where everyone knew everyone else. If I could go back to those simple happy days forever I would do it in a heartbeat. It all looks so interesting!

Thank you Brian. I lived just along from here from 1964 to 1971 (aged 8 to 15) and saw much of the demolition as it happened. My brother used to go diving in Eyemouth in the 80's and 90's, he loved it there. 👍

@@DavidGarside cool yeah we get lots of divers here. Bet you found it sad that so much of Newcastle and near areas were ruthlessly demolished in the 60’s/70’s? It was the destruction of whole communities. They should’ve modernised the housing and kept the streets and old layout the same. Keep the heritage of the area. But there were a lot of dodgy deals going on back then. The Victorian districts are almost all lost now.

@@TheGreatest1974 Yes, a very popular place for diving. I've lived down south for 50 years now, and yes, I see the changes and feel very disappointed at a lot of them when I visit. There's always something changed or gone.....It's what they call 'progress', and I know it's a continuous thing. Never mind, we have our memories.

Wonderful!! My Dad's pub (The Crooked Billet) at 2.13 brought back so many happy memories. I was born in 1938 & lived there until my marriage in 1958 (minus 2 years National Service). The people of the area didn't have much but had BIG hearts. I worked in the pub with my Dad for a couple of years when I was first married. A friend of mine lived in a low rise block of 2-floor flats that overlooked the cemetery, I think. Spent a lot of time there but for the life of me I can't remember the name of the place. It has been demolished now and I am not surprised, they were falling down anyway.
All I can remember of the area was that Elswick was rough and you had to watch out in the pubs around the Big Lamp. Still, had great times there.
Early 1980's this is. I was surprised to see, on Google Maps, those three blocks of flats were still up, I thought they had been knocked down, or were they others closer to St James? I used to walk past them every day, but for the life of me I cannot recall much now, just snatches of places and people. Old age is grand ...

Do you by any chance know where the first photo was taken? It looks like somewhere towards Summerhill.

To be honest I'm not sure, I will ask my brother next time I speak to him. Looks around the Westmorland Road area. Hope this helps.

It isn't Westmorland road as it has tram wire poles, I initially though westmorland as it does look like the area near what is now the doctors but it can't be as that was not on a tram route. Bit of a mystery as it does not seem to fit in to anywhere I can think of so looking forward to the answer!

craigix. Yes, I did notice the Traction poles ( I think that's what they're called). Most probably Elswick Road then, but will check with him... Hopefully he'll remember after all these years.

My brother does think it's on the corner of Westmorland Road and Park Road, but can't be sure as it was so long ago. I've also sent the photo to a good friend of his (and mine), as he really knows the area from around that time as he grew up there. I will update when I hear back.

Confirmed it is the corner of Westmorland Road and Park Road. Although the Trolley buses didn't go along there, the Trams did, hence the Traction poles.

I've not lived in Newcastle for years, but I understand from others that it's long gone. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong though !

Do you know by any chance where Mary Bell’s (The juvenile serial killer) house is? Is it still sound or has it been demolished?

Hmm, I think it was around the Whitehouse Road area. There's been lots of development round there for years so I don't know if the actual house still exists. Sorry I can't help further.
