I was NOT expecting such an honest and down-to-earth interview here. Even when Sam gives him the opportunity to be modest he rebuffs that and chooses to be forthright about celebrity culture and how everyone has a small part of themselves that seek it out. Very refreshing. Well done Andrew.

Things like this are why I have picked up journalism as a major. I am a storyteller and I want to have conversations with different characters. I want to get into the minds of creators and performers, scientists and travellers. I want to get to know humanity bit by bit by asking these kinds of questions that actually give good ground for a conversation to grow and blossom. Interviews are the art of talking, communicating infront of an audience. In this act all of the performers benefit so much from each other by just merely being human and being honest about it. I don't want to ask questions like ''so why did you break up'' or ''what did you think about your sex scene''. I want things like that. People should look for this.

Andrew is basically describing parasocial relationships here as far as why w/ movie stars it's different and doing these interviews and things like that makes it worse. He's right though with theatre it is totally just about the play and the character and I think that is because people tend to become more fans of the play itself and not so much who is in it. Plays get redone over and over and over again (how many times has Hamlet been done) so people are just there for that experience and what interpretation is the actor/tress going to bring. Not to mention it helps that there is usually a meet & greet right after the performance (especially w/ smaller plays) so people don't get to associate people so much with their character or their celebrity but as a real person playing a part as a job.

fame or celebrity culture seem to stem from many things when it comes to human nature. Its about these people, being able to do something that others don't think they can do, or get paid exorbitant amounts for what others think they can do, its about being present in a medium that seems to exist in a sphere which contains a level of power and responsibility, its about the intimacy created from seeing these people as all these different people and getting up close to them and the stories they tell and not being able to be close to them. its about thinking they are so different from you and wanting to see just how much. Ultimately its about being disconnected from yourself. There is also the collective knowing of someone something that people are sharing. if we were sharing more things with people or recognised how much we share however different we are then fame would not be so prevalent. Ironically thats usually what film and tv are there to achieve or at least one main reason why we watch it, or why actors become actors. But for me all the people i love and am obsessed with, would make my knees weak, eyes teary in the presence of, have lived extraordinary lives made great work an are ultimately very kind and clever people that we wish to emulate in that sense. This translates to fame. People who are excited just because the person is famous not because they really have an emotional connection i dont know what that is or how to describe it, but it is totally strange and illogical.

I'd like to add that the difference between theater and film (and celeb culture) is that comedians who are exceptionally funny get starting vehicles in sitcoms or movies. (Think Seinfeld, Tim Allen, or Adam Sandler). I can't think of anyone getting a play. Shows and films are more autobiographical than theater. And the rise of vlogging. It's easier to be yourself on film than on stage.

People are limited in how much they can express appreciation for a story. You can put a poster on your wall of Tom Hanks as Forrest Gump sitting on a park bench with a box of chocolates.. but you can't physically put a poster of the story of Forrest Gump on your wall because the story isn't a physical thing. Similarly, you could walk up to Meg Ryan and tell her how much you love Sleepless In Seattle.. but you can't walk up to the story of Sleepless In Seattle and say how much the film means to you and have the story respond to you. You can't have the story say "thank you so much, I'm glad the movie had such an impact on you." because a story isn't capable of doing that.
Humans are such emotional creatures that when somebody plays a role that connects with us so deeply or sings a song that connects with us so deeply.. it's hard for most people not to feel a personal connection and attachment to that person. I do see the danger spoken about in this video though of celebrities being held up too high. In the eyes of some, they become characters themselves and their trials and tribulations are "reported" on for peoples entertainment. Some celebrities seem to buy into this and try to use it to their advantage. I think those who rein in this type of thing are probably making the much wiser and healthier option though.

If you’re successful as an entertainer, you’re kinda expected to be a god, understand everything other people expect of you and be that admirable figure on red carpets and billboards and magazines. Some people think it’s stupid not to do them if you have the chance. But entertainers need connection, they crave it and it drives them to do what they do. Maybe they’re not stupid not to take the chances, but just wise enough to stay here, do what they like, connect with others like human. After all, we’re still going to die and we’re all human.

distracts us from emptiness of the conversation. In this black and white form, we are presented with only what matters.

Ooh, Amen. Yes. “The God in the room is the story.” Ha! I actually said “Amen” which I guess might propagate that idea of the celebrity as God. Or maybe it just says, thank you, storyteller, for that prayer for truth and for the storyteller to be the most real of all. I say Amen to that!

This believer in Liberty, Equality and Solidarity does have his opinion about his very often "beschaeftigung" literally being busy with celibrity culture. A. It is high time we stop worshipping ONLY the celebrities. B. There is also something worthy about the so called people called celebrities, they represent also human achievement. PERIOD.

The actual storyteller is the writer and they are most certainly not treated like God. Actors are interpreters of story, not creators of it.

Starring in a black and white interview video seems as self-important as being on a billboard, so this was very meta. But yeah Andrew Garfield is great!
