    The Norris Leclerc incident was, in my opinion, far from a penalty. Norris placed his car on the inside way before the turn, anticipating and preventing a divebomb, not reacting to it. Leclerc was going for a future gap that didnt open and had to react to norris breaking earlier due to the tighter line. If they crash it's propably a racing incident, if not causing a collision by Leclerc.

      Lando made it bleedingly obviously which line he was taking, but leclerc already decided to overtake on the inside and was caught napping

All throughout the race that inside dive bomb was nearly impossible to defend once you've committed to the outside sweep. It was painfully obvious what was going to happen, Lando still fighting for the championship and it being the last lap, and Charles really should have expected it. I think someone like Alonso or Lewis would expect it more and be able to go around the outside and cut back to overtake on exit

    I'm a McLaren fan, but it'll take some kind of miracle for Lando to win it in the Sunday race. The car isn't the best this weekend and it's not particularly close and the tire degradation compared to the Ferraris in the sprint doesn't show much promise for a longer race. Piastri also struggling shows that it's not just Lando, so it's a McLaren issue this week. People will jump to dump on Lando, but I genuinely think he outqualified the car here with luck from Russell.

    So Alonso got penalised because het took a different race line and because of that it meant he had to brake earlier.
    Lando did exactly the same. and the same goes for the moving under breaking.
    And yes, you love it as it keeps the title fight alive.
    So Lando got away with it, which is questionable.
    I already know that Matt will roll his eyes, but again its a British driver that got the benefit of the doubt.
    I happen to speak multiple languages and outside british media the feeling is very different than the english (how come?).
    German and Spanish speaking media also see the British bias.

      @As-qz5lr 10 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +13

      Not sure it is British bias, more it is big team/driver bias and a desire not to "spoil" the championship. I think it is marginal but then I watch Sky F1 which is a basically a Hamilton fan channel. I'm sure if Max did it to Norris, there would be 30 minute interrogation.

    • @CraigPaulWilson
      @CraigPaulWilson 8 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +6

      I'm sorry Tommy but that's a ridiculous reading of the Norris/Leclerc situation.
      Alonso's penalty in Australia was a joke - that was good defending, and he got penalised for George's failure to read his move.
      Here, Lando went to place his car on the inside pre-emptively to stop a dive-bomb and had to brake early as a result. Charles just misread it, that's it, but was able to recover it.
      Now, I'm not a fan of the IndyCar rule that you can't make *reactionary* defensive moves, but if we say pre-emptive positioning into a corner is bad too, then we're basically eliminating any form of defending other than down a straight.

    I'm actually shocked about Tommys take on the Lando-Charles incident. You expect it on twitter for people to lose their head over hard racing, but not a long time F1/racing fan like Tommy. He braked early? Yeah no shit he's taking a much tighter line with dead tyres, he needs to brake earlier. And the inside line for that braking zone was never once open, Charles just expected it to open up but it didn't. Lando did nothing wrong there and fair play to Matt for seeing it as it is despite being a Charles Leclerc fan

    8:25 Max did get a 10 second penalty for the crash but there was no penalty for the other two times when there was no crash
    8:43 Lando has braked earlier than normal HOWEVER that is the point you need to brake at in order to make the apex of the next corner based on taking that tighter line because it's a shorter distance to the apex whereas the normal racing line is a longer line but allows you to keep more speed through the corner. It's why divebombing at that corner works so well sometimes as you will never make the apex but you're essentially hoping to compromise the other driver to the point where they can't cut back on the inside

    "Based on the rest of the season it should not be a penalty" has everyone forgot the 20s penalty Alonso got for "breaking early" in a situation much less dangerous, just because the idiot behind crashed. Here it was much more erratic and risky but but because Charles is a good driver and somehow was able to keep it clean, not hitting Lando or crashing himself it is ok? It is definitely better for the championship excitement, but just proves how ridiculous and bias the penalty to Alonso was.

      Two completely different situations. Lando took a defensive line to defend against Charles attacking him up the inside of the corner. Charles just didn't expect Lando to defend. Alonso didn't take a different line. He backed off the throttle on what was basically a straight right in to a high speed corner and then went back on throttle again. All Lando did was brake earlier because he was on a tighter defensive line. Alonso lifting off throttle on the racing line in to a high speed corner is way more dangerous than Lando braking early because of taking a defensive position. Alonso did what he did purely to throw George off. Lando HAD to drive differently because he was defending and not taking the normal racing line.

    All that Max needs to do is to finish right after Lando every race including the last two sprintraces to become champion with a 4 points difference. And that is if Lando can get the maximum amount of points including fastest lap for all 6 remaining races and including the last 2 sprintraces. Maximum amount of points left over in the championship is 172 points, and behind that the second maximum amount of points is 122 points. So the difference is 50 points between first and second maximum, and right now Max has a 54 point lead.
    And if another driver wins a race it is only beneficial for Max as long as he can finish right after or even before Lando.

But for the championship it seems like redbull have found their issue and given max a car he is more comfortable in so it’s pretty much over, without some miracles. Lando has never really out performed that car. He is not capable of that, because he is not that extraordinary driver. He is very good, but not that world champion material. The only way he can compete for a title is when he has the best car, and even then he struggles. Mclaren has had the fastest car since Miami, for the biggest part of this season, and he is still 50 points behind Verstappen. I have to admit that he has also been victim of some terrible team strategies, but Lando didn't out perform that car much this year.

    Sorry Tommy, have to disagree with you on the Lando/Leclerc incident. People have failed to mention that twice in that lap Lando had locked up and was probably overheating his tyres trying to stay ahead (he did say his front tyres were dead in post-race interview). Going into the double left hander he needed to brake earlier, partly because of the reduced grip but also to make the corner at that sharp of an angle.
    I think Leclerc simply got tunnel vision thinking about the divebomb on the last lap and got caught out by the wounded McLaren defending its position.

  • @vokin
    @vokin 12 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +10

    Tommy is just wrong here. Watch the clip again and Sainz taking the normal line. Lando very clearly doesn't take that line, brakes as he should for the tighter line and as the lead car had every right to do so. Charles also wanted to take that line for the overtake, which is his right, however Lando did it first. That's why this was so close: they both took the alt line. The only "issue" here was Charles being caught out that Lando didn't go wide on the normal line. If either of them had done the normal line, we wouldn't be saying anything (well maybe that Lando go passed if he went wide), but when both go tight, issue. Charles "did nothing wrong" because he was fine to take that inside line if he wanted, but if there was contact, it would have been on Charles/a racing incident. Just because Charles wanted to take that line doesn't mean Lando can't or was somehow at fault. Charles isn't turning differently than Lando, Lando isn't cutting across his nose, they are both just taking that tight line and Charles wasn't expecting it. He was expecting Lando to be wide so Charles would have a few extra meters to brake, but instead Lando went tight and was in Charles's braking point. But again, lead car has that right.
    And if you still don't believe me, look at what Charles said after the race. He said after looking at it again and not being in the stress of the last lap, it was totally fine and not at all bad driving by Lando.
