- Former double agent Naveed Jamali rates 12 spy scenes in movies and TV, such as "Casino Royale," for realism.
Jamali breaks down espionage tactics such as the realism of disguises in "Atomic Blonde," starring Charlize Theron; "Mission: Impossible - Fallout," with Tom Cruise, Henry Cavill, and Simon Pegg; as well as the concept of developing a character as a double agent in "Casino Royale," starring Daniel Craig; and "Iron Man 2," with Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Jon Favreau, and Gwyneth Paltrow. He explains both Russian and American intelligence tactics, and connects them to his real-life experience with the FBI and the GRU, in "Salt," starring Angelina Jolie; "Red Sparrow," starring Jennifer Lawrence, and "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" (2011), with Gary Oldman, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Tom Hardy. He also looks at more field operation scenes and comments on the state of counterintelligence from the Cold War to the present in "The Sympathizer" E2 and E7 (2023), with Robert Downey Jr.; "Spy Game," starring Brad Pitt and Robert Redford; "Breach," and "24" S2E9 (2003).
Jamali was a double agent, operating as an FBI asset posing as a recruit for the Russian GRU, from 2005 to 2009. The operation concluded with the FBI "arresting" Jamali in front of his GRU case officer, Oleg Kulikov, effectively exposing Kulikov's cover as a diplomat in the United States. After the operation, Jamali was appointed as an Intelligence Officer in the United States Navy Reserve. Today he is an editor-at-large at Newsweek and executive producer and host of its show "Unconventional." He also cowrote a book detailing his double agent operation, "How to Catch a Russian Spy: The True Story of an American Civilian Turned Double Agent."

FBI Spy Rates 12 Spy Scenes In Movies And TV | How Real Is It? | Insider
And the whole time that the FBI thought he was working for them, he was in fact working for Insider (he was the man inside)
You could also say he was the “Inside Man”….
So he was the.. Insider?
So he was a triple agent
Woiuld you say, he's an insider?
Now i want to try this guy's French toast
My kids give it two thumbs up.
This man just give me a whole list of movies to watch. thanks.
What a nice regular seeming guy, I bet he was very believable at his role. And he gave points for the broader topics that Hollywood got right vs nitpicking details. We know they’re all movies and don’t show reality.
The best agents are indistinguishable from normal crowd, easier to blend.
Kim Kardashian reading this - 😔😔😔
@@vasiovasio most agents can't be good movie stars , coz actors desires fame 😊💗
@sherinjohn001 Dude, please don't write these things! Kim is reading and crying right now! 🥺😢😔
He's actually a quadruple agent lol
Makes him invisible infront of the cake buffett.
actually triple 🤓👆
The funny thing is as the son of immigrants, the joke in my family was "why just a double? Couldn't you be a triple agent and a dentist."
@@naveedjamali6482 as you could make french toast, I wonder why you haven't been an agent for the french, too 😄or are you?
This guy has to be the most lenient/generous expert on this channel either that or hollywood really knows how to get double agent scenes right, which wouldnt be surprising considering that hollywood are experts at being fake.
I've seen at least one other Insider expert give nothing less than a 7. And some give nothing even that high.
I was rating it on the scene, not the overall movie.
@@naveedjamali6482i was talking about the rating of the scenes
I was like a 9 for Atomic Blonde, but once he'd said why, I laugh so hard.
Once someone admits to being an agent, never believe their actual loyalties.
he WAS an agent. WAS. jesus christ you people are slow.
It doesn't matter, really with respect to what the comment was about. @@ItsJoKeZ
@@GaadhiMahendraThat persons user name is peak irony.
Tinfoil-hats are on sale now, huh?
Terrific expert! He's so down-to-earth and descriptive, and he really communicates what's fun about the entertainment we're seeing, as well as what is realistic. It's easy to see why he was believable and successful as a spy himself.
I agree! He's been one of my favorites, and like you said, b/c he acknowledges the entertainment and what they did right. It feels like many are only looking to highlight what they did wrong. Which is ok. But I think balance to see both is good.
Well… now his cover’s blown.
When they interview people like this they have long retired and the government usually dictate what they can and can't say for national security reasons. Also if this guy meets a suspicious end there's already a list of suspects.
@@SEAZNDragonexactly. This operation ended in 2009, I wrote a book, served in the Navy, was an MSNBC analyst - the Russians are not surprised to see this.
@@naveedjamali6482 Thank you for fighting against Russian fascism.
@@naveedjamali6482 bloody well done mate. So, did you manage to get yourself a new corvette or what?
- Putin.
@@naveedjamali6482 I'd really love to hear you review the movie "Hopscotch!"
People: "Who do you really work for"
Double Agent "Yes"
Oh man, I love these kinds of spy thriller, especially when you have to hunt down a mole. But there's so many to pick from. Here is my list, spy movies that were overlooked. Theres always going to be a double agent in James Bond movies; CASINO ROYALE. DIE ANOTHER DAY. GOLDENEYE. LICENSE TO KILL. SPECTRE.
BLACK BOOK.
THE DEPARTED.
GET SMART.
THE GOOD SHEPHERD.
THE GUNS OF NAVARONE.
THE IMITATION GAME.
THE IMPOSSIBLE SPY.
INFERNAL AFFAIR.
INGLORIOUS BASTERDS.
THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE.
MI-5.
NO WAY OUT.
THE RECRUIT.
RONIN.
SCORPIO.
STALAG 17.
STEAL THE SKY.
THREE DAYS OF THE CONDOR.
THE THREE MUSKETEERS.
TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY.
WHERE EAGLES DARE.
I just find it kind of interesting that this video didn't talk about the torture aspect of spycraft and made sure not to include movies like Peacemaker or Syriana. I assume this video is to try to create interest in becoming a spy. Just like recruiting into the Marines but they never talk about field day.
I did. I made clear that coercion (that includes torture) does not work long term, and can only yield short term info at best.
This is oleg..he actually triple agent
His real name is Sambal Oleg
Should have added True Lies. This guy would give it a 10 / 10 for realism. I suppose it's somewhat realistic in the way Bill Paxton's character is portrayed. It's probably based on this guy.
If not Paxson... Maybe Johnny English 😅
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, the book is on a different level.
Does a double agent collect 2 paychecks?
Probably to attract no attention 😅
Lol, he should be 😂
16:30 “you just told her four things that have to be true” … my ex did not watch this movie 😅
Following you. Someone told me you pull a u-turn and then drive through a parking lot.
They knew to pick the right thumbnail 😂
Just checked if he has written a book about his journey, and found it on amazon. Will read this.
Espionage seems dangerous but also petty and silly. Proablably fun.
Hey "Naveed": all that US paraphernalia isn't going to convince me you aren't a triple agent 😅
The original Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy was a miniseries broadcast in the UK starring Alec Guiness it is the best version of that book. I highly recommend it.
Awesome video keep it up with great work ❤❤❤
This man is a spy movie encyclopedia.
Oleg watching this:😒
For those wondering, it's "double agents", not "double O" agents
Huh, so he was a different type of double spy. Makes sense. They must be all kinds of types of spies
Today I learned what NOC stands for. All through Mission Impossible, no one ever explains what the NOC in NOC list stands for, and now I know.
It's literally defined in the same sentence it's first mentioned in _Mission Impossible_ (1996): "This morning, we learned that Golitsyn has stolen one half of a CIA NOC list, the list of our _non-official cover_ agents working in Eastern Europe." (emphasis mine)
They missed out "The Blacklist" - Raymond Reddington
Thought we'd see a clip from The Americans for sure.
I’ve been interviewed about the Americans
Would have liked to see him react to The Departed
One of my favorite movies. It does a good job of the psychology of working undercover.
Fascinating video
Imma go ahead and say this guys not a spy
That's right. He was an asset. The spy recruits the agent, who then collects the intelligence, and is then debriefed by the spy who recruited them to write their reports. Almost all of real spy work is talking to people and is about as exciting as going to a restaurant.
@@faismasterx are..... are you a spy?
@@talibangb9566 he is. We're all spies here on TH-cam.
I clicked, but am totally expecting him to call bs on 99% of what he watches.
The thing that made him believable for me was his palpable hesitation while he decided what he could or could not disclose
A good actor can fool you into thinking that
for a second i thought he was working against US 😂
For a third he is
What they don't show you is after this video ended he took off his mask.
These breakdowns never pull out the realistic shows... where is a reaction to the big European success The Bureau -which is thrilling but with a much bigger focus on the actual real craft of modern spies?
Or The Good Shepherd.
The fact that so many people don't believe he was a double agent means that he did his job really well
From an administrative point of view, I am rather curious: If an American pretends to spy for Russia and they pay him, can he keep the money? If so, is it taxed? If so, how on earth would he file that? (I am not American, I just assume you have to file where your income came from).
One can tell you're German, just by reading the text and skip your name 😄
Spy Game is my favorite.
I want to trust him, but he gives off Jon Lovitz vibes 😆
that's the ticket
What does he think is ironic with green kryptonite and Tony Stark?
Wasn't the Aston Martin they destroyed a replica?
Comrade Naveed, take special care against gun umbrellas, radiation poisoning, and ODing on hamburgers...
Be wary of girls with spray bottles
This guy should've been Fight Club.
His name is Robert Paulsen.
He better put some respect on Hooters wings
Lol his reason to say no to a thumbdrive transfer is it's going to alert their endpoint solution so youre now exposed
Is Insider actually an FBI recruitment agency and this guy an actor? He already said he's used lines from movies before...
You cant have young people working CI when it takes years to get into the FBI, then even more time before you can possibly do that as a job.
In spanish please !!! Thanks great channel
So he did all that to get a recommendation for the Navy Reserve? That seems like a very low price.
Hawaii isn't an escape.
It's a dead end unless you own a boat or plane.
Do you still call Oleg on his birthday?
How is that man still alive
What does green kryptonite have to do with tony stark? Whole different cinamatic universe
Wow 🤦🏽♂️
Right, that's why he said ironically, not coincidentally .
acktully ☝️🤓
Wait what... he's a spy spying as a spy for another spy agency?
24 a 4? Really? Ok whatever. It's still the best TV show of all time.
TOM CRUISE = LEGEND
What if this is FBI double play in which he is not actually a double agent but trick the Russian to think they have another one?
Next up, 'Convicted Murderer rates 10 murder scenes in Movies and TV | How Real is it?'
Gangsters have indeed appeared here
literally someone could finish a sentence and go on here bro- is that insane to think on? are you that dull
No Scenes from „The Americans“? 🤔
Sounds like agood spy is entirely boring lol
What did this guy do with his skillset and English knowledge…infiltrate a Starbucks?
Can someone explain the relation he made between Tony Stark and green kryptonite? Did he confuse a Marvel and a DC character?
it’s just because Superman and iron man are both comic characters. duh
I bet Daniel Craig is disappointed that England lost in Euro 2024 and yes
He looks like someone you could trust. One of the rare videos I am not feeling and may not finish.
Retired Russian spy? 🤔 Never heard of it. 😂
naveed jamali ??? is he iranian?
He obviously is, I was looking to see if anyone has mentioned it
According to this guy EVERYTHING is believable
You're unbelievable
this man was never a spy … definitely
Dude, he's a spy, do you actually believe everything he said 😂?
Since when does the fbi operate on foreign soil ?
Is that why bond always was upfront with his name 🤔 he never gave fake name now it makes sense being suspicious from the go actually eliminate you chance moat as well stick as close to truth just leave out specific
idk is it me or he said several things not super clear
Wonder what the James Bond car crash scene has to do with being a double agent. Yet, it's easily one of the worst product placements. Who would spend a six-digit amount of money on a sportscar that flips all over the place as soon as it has to go around a small obstacle?
Funny enough, they actually could not make the Aston Martin to roll over because it was built to be stable. They had to put a pneumatic cylinder or something on the bottom of the car and activate it manually to get the car to roll. The stunt driver who did it is former stig (Ben Collins). I'm sure there's a video of the whole thing somewhere in TH-cam.
Search him on the web, he is legit.
Opening line as the worst type of action ever! Anyone following would be a lot more interested right away.
Do you know how much Russian I know? No.
He's dressed way too vetbro to actually be cool.
1:48 what does kryptonite have to do with Tony stark???
Loose superhero link
I don't believe a word..
As always spys search the spotlight although they are under threat of life 😂
…he was a fake informer
I doubt this guy is a real agent
And see you in Finalissima 2025 Argentina vs Spain and 2026 FIFA World Cup ⚽️
"everything i did was basically created in my own head" oh kewl.......cya next vid.........
No killing eve
How are you not dead?
russsians are incompetent, that's how
Ivan eht nioj
GRU: Comrade Naveed, are you deadly like Bond, Bourne and Wick?
Naveed: Absolutely 😎
FBI: Agent Naveed, can you be like Seinfeld?
Naveed: Yeah sure 🤪
His target was the most valuable jelly doughnut. It turns out, he was double dog dare crossed by a triple dog dare agent. Turns out, it was just a jelly doughnut HOLE!!! He almost lost his life that day. It's his "great White Buffalo"

This guy is so full of nonsense lol
Anderson Betty Wilson Edward Moore Timothy
Former double agent, otherwise he sucks at his job
This dude wasn't an agent lol
Oleg?
That's what he wants you to think.
I guess he did his job 😂
U guy got the absolute worst agent to come on. He's overweight. Sounds American. Probably has an American accent when speaking Russians kgb officer that they undoubtedly noticed. he didn't see any action because he was a paper pusher.
