      I'm actually broke after getting a Gibson. And it's a weird thing to own. Expensive, heavy, uncomfortable but the sound... you cope with all this because of the sound. Same goes fot the above video. I'd choose a Gibson any day over PRS.

    My uncle gave me a satin PRS as a surprise Christmas gift. To this day it still blows my mind every time I pick it up how much I love it. Looks, sounds and feels like a dream guitar I would've custom designed myself. It's been my most prized possession & main guitar since the moment I got it. Thank you Uncle Jorge!

    I'm really glad that PRS are getting out of Gibson's shadow and starting to be really seen as their own thing, on their own terms. It's a hell of an achievement and it's true that Gibsons and PRS each have their own wonderful, unique characteristics. Long live both!

    • @libertylizard_
      @libertylizard_ 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You mean like constantly falling out of tune, nuts and frets that are labelled under 'international embarrassment' and generally just a dead weight block of wood? Sure. Gibson are laughable junk, no modern musician uses them. Go PRS 24. Only guitar worth owning in this bracket.

    • @DerEchteBold
      @DerEchteBold 7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      If someone offered me the choice between these guitars I would take the LP without a second thought, don't care if the other one is 'worth' a thousand bucks more, I never liked the typical PRS sound.
      Although a proper Strat would be the first choice for me too.
      ...wish I could afford any of these ; )

      Hmm... if anything it sounds slightly out of tune there, I don't think that sound is really bad, it just isn't as 'special' and distinctive as a LP or Strat.

    • @bumpyroad3251

      Jacob Barlow well said! I’ve just recently drank the PRS kool aid and I’ve totally changed my tune on the coffee table that I thought was the prs.. I absolutely 💚 my 1995 anniversary McCarty... however, my 1990 lp has a tone that just fits in a mix better and is definitely more recognizable. If I don’t think about trying to make the prs sound like my beloved, then it just becomes apples and oranges.
      But, damn I do love my new/old prs;)

    I remember in 1989 I was 4 and sneaking downstairs on Saturday morning and watching MTV. I can't place any individual I saw because it was an era of spandex and pointy guitars. Then I saw slash with that tobacco burst les paul. After that I got into my parents records and it seemed on the inside pictures everyone had Gibsons. Leslie west, the allmans, cream, zeppelin it was like a Gibson catalog. I know they aren't the most dependable manufacturers but when you find a good Gibson that's the sound and vibe.

    • @RoaldKoger
      @RoaldKoger 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      About that same time I saw Damn Yankees for the first time on MTV and they had a heavy, yet very melodic and open sound. Guess what Tommy Shaw and Ted Nugent were playing? PRS! It was a revelation to me. By the way, I was not 4, but in my early twenties...

    • @libertylizard_
      @libertylizard_ 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      PRS is a modern machine. Gibson a grandads guitar. So for the modern musician its PRS all the way, especially in heavy metal. A gibson is a beast but its old and traditional. Nothing modern bands will touch, so eventually it simply wont have a market comparatively.

Its almost like blasphemy lol.most critics of prs dont even own one! I prefer to play my prs. And yes I do have a lp and sg also. Sometimes I lean towards my sg over les paul. Love both. I have developed a medical condition over the years of playing and the body shape of the Les Paul is very much the reason for it. I have a trapped Ulna Nerve mainly from the sharp edge of the LP body shape where my arm crosses the body of the guitar. I only wish Gibson would address this issue. I have had to change to a PRS based on the curved body shape. PRS and Fender Strats are more ergonomically user friendly for my condition. I have since had an operation and it seems to have worked but the days of playing 4 hour night with my loved LP is much over. PRS here I come.

    I love these comparison videos between PRS and Gibson because people start going crazy and arguing about how the PRS doesn't sound like a Les Paul. I can only say "Duh". It's a PRS. It doesn't sound like a tuba either. If you want a Les Paul, get a Les Paul. If you want a Strat, get a Srat. I want my PRS to sound like a PRS. If you want one guitar to sound like all of them, get a Variax, slap some PRS pups in that sucker, and quit griping.

I was playing mostly blues and clean tones on the coil split and the guy in the store started tell me I was playing the guitar wrong lol It was second hand and only 500 euro, (and left handed which costs more than right handed). They have terrible resale value so it's all gain if you like them.

    PRS has a tremolo - and a great one at that! And their necks feel better. And they are lighter. And their split coil sound is way more useful and does not have the volume loss. But the Gibson humbucker sound is superior and especially with gain. And the Gibson has slightly better sustain. And that sums it up! ☺️

Better yet go to nearly any PRS or PRS compared to TH-cam video and read the comments and likes and you'll get the consensus. The only people who don't like PRS are those who can't afford them or those who still believe Gibson makes quality guitars.

      Origin Music I agree, I have found a lack of quality with the Gibson line, especially in the Les Paul 2017. From cracks in the finish , unfinished or undressed necks with major fret sprouting to electronic issues. One I tried , which I thought was beautiful, the neck pickup didn't work..at all..just the bridge pick up. Another had a noisy toggle switch and input jack. After that I just stopped looking. The only one that played okay and had no issues was one that I didn't care for the color.One guitar out of 4 that I tried. What is up with quality? I was frustrated to say the least. I've always wanted a Les Paul standard and I have many guitars. But after that, I am quite disinterested. I do like the PRS line of guitars and would definitely like a core model. Every one I've tried had no issues and played great. Just hefty price tags, even compared to Gibson..saving money for something awesome. It's a shame though about Gibson..maybe they just got a bunch of Bstock at our store. I'm puzzled. Then I see these videos and they look and sound fine with no issues.

    • @guitardudeguy3139
      @guitardudeguy3139 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Origin Music Oh, I believe you, it's just a shame..I do own a Gibson acoustic guitar that luckily played and sounded great..but have looked at other same model guitars and they didn't compare to the one that I own. So apparently it's hit or miss. But for a 1700.00 acoustic guitar it should be a hit Everytime. But that's not the case here. It's a shame for such an iconic brand. There's no pride in the craft anymore..it's awful. I hear so many others complaining about them..I thought it was an isolated unlucky kind of thing..nope.

    • @crigonalgaming1258
      @crigonalgaming1258 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Guitardudeguy TMark/Osh Right on brother. It's funny how a 600 dollar guitar from Cort factory could GUARANTEE you to take you through a gig, meanwhile you could risk yourself with a Gibson costing around over a grand, yet less than 100 bucks worth of effort has been put to the construction of the instrument. Gibson now is nothing but a headstock name which is a shame. A manufacturer with such "prestige" in the name should be pressured to keep their QC up to standard.

    I have an 82 LP Custom, bought new when I was a teenager. It was my first love. In the early 90's I bought an 87 PRS CE24, which became my go-to guitar for most everything, because it was so much easier to play. With my stereo rig (ADA MP-1 thru Mesa 50/50) I could make either guitar sound amazing (I had swapped a couple Seymour Duncan JB's in the LP by this time.)
    With the 5-way rotary switch on the PRS, it had more versatile tones, but forget about switching quickly, like during a song. But put the PU switch in the middle on the LP, and you could dial in some great unique tones using the volume & tone knobs, that I just could not get from the PRS. But no matter what I did, I could never get the PRS to have that thick, rich, full, sustaining tone that the LP had. Damn thing weighs over 10lbs! So they both had their place. But I mostly played the PRS, and often found myself overdoing it with too much gain on my amp to try to get it to sound like the LP (when needed.) It never had that sustain, no matter what I did.
    I remember saying that if PRS put out a guitar that played like mine, but with the tonal balls of the LP, they'd really have a fantastic guitar. I didn't know about the Single Cuts yet, but when I found out, I was lusting for one. So out of the blue, my bass player brings me a brand new, 10-Top, Tiger Eye, Burgundy SC from the factory (he knew the guy who headed up artist relations; I live 30 minutes from the factory.) That was hands down the most amazing guitar I'd ever played. It was the best of both guitars, and it played like butter. This was late 90's, early 2000's, iirc..., and it cost around $3300 new at Levin's, but I couldn't make myself pull the trigger. I had to give it back after about a month.
    Those are old versions of both, so you can get either to do things better now. But that's my take on the comparison. They both have their pros & cons.

      Dude
      Petals in my opinion does zap the tone somewhat l totally agree with you. A quality amp and guitar shouldn't use pedals. Like a good steak doesn't need steak sauce BUT if you haven't, try out a petal called ,get ready it's a nasty name for a petal. The cockfight by electro harmonics l believe, it the wildest thing ever. Look it up. I mean probably wouldn't use it in a live situation, but it's the funniest petal I've ever played. If you have time to Google it, check it out. I dont think you will be disappointed.

    Enjoyed seeing this comparison tackled again - as I'm choosing between PRS and Gibson at the moment.
    Video Suggestion: You said that if you put the Gibson pickups in the PRS it still wouldn't sound like a Gibson. I'm sure you're right - but it would make for a very interesting video if you could do just that: Compare a Gibson with Gibson pickups and a PRS with Gibson pickups.
    Anyone else interested in seeing / hearing that?

    The very first electric guitar I bought was a Gibson Les Paul. Beautiful guitar, nice bass tone, but I was frustrated with it from the beginning. Tuning probs with D&G, buzzing (after a setup). So I tried a mim strat. Felt great and played great. Then I fell in love with a PRS SE Zack Myers. Loved the satin neck and guitar feel. I suppose it all comes down to individual subjectivity, but for me, the feel, dependability, consistency of quality all come from PRS.

  • @NickTompkinsMusic
    @NickTompkinsMusic 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think Rob put it pretty well because thats the way I feel about PRS as well. It's everything I love about an instrument in one single guitar. I've spent way more money than I should have in my life acquiring new instruments - gibson les paul standard, ibanez j craft, ebmm, etc - and I recently purchased what I believe will be the instrument that follows me the rest of my life, a 2005 PRS CE-24, hasn't gotten here yet but I'm incredibly excited and more than confident that it will be up to the task of a lifetime of play and musical enjoyment. Of the instruments associated with the brands i listed this CE-24 is the least expensive of those, the others are all gone and all I have learned has gone into this one purchase. Won't know her name 'til I hold her or at least see her but I know she'll be by my side for many years.

    This year I bought a 2017 PRS 594, single cut (faded whale blue) and a 2017 Gibson LP Standard T (Bourbon Burst). I never had either of these guitar types before (never could afford when was young). Now everybody has different tastes and hears different things but I ended up keeping the LP and returning the PRS. The PRS was beautiful, flawless, played well, perfectly setup. I compared the two playing the same note, same amp, same microphone location, same settings. The PRS had almost twice the sustain time. Incredible. I used an app to graph the sound decay. The deciding factor? Tone. The LP was just too sweet to my ears. Sweetwater was awesome on returning the PRS. Note I played through a Fender Bassbreaker 15 and a 1975 Twin.

    I just can't get with the PRS tone. There is just something thin and sterile about them. They look great, and I'll take others' word for it that the build quality is top notch. But in the end tone is the thing, and for me a Les Paul is always thicker and richer, whether playing rock, blues, or even jazz. This video confirms both the dull sound of the PRS and the richness of the Les Paul.

    • @SirVicc
      @SirVicc 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I noticed the same and agree. Between these two guitars, the LP was so much more full and dynamic. Alive is the word that keeps coming to mind. Flat was the word the PRS conjured up. Though that PRS that Chapman bought (and returned?) awhile back sounded fantastic.

    Owned and still own both. Really like them both but at the end of the day, I end up going to the Les Paul most. A bit more of a full sound with less harsh notes. The quality control and articulation from the PRS is great though.
    I would also say that I think both should go with that newer smooth neck carve that the HP Les Paul's have. I may get a lot of heat for that but they feel great and I can't think of any downsides. It honestly just seems like a nice refinement.
