I am from EU and here an american PRS or a true LP from Gibson is simply unaffordable for my financial disposition. Even the korean made PRS are above my pay grade.
I go with Squiers and Harley Benton thats my price category. ;-)

There's nothing wrong with a Squier, buddy. We all get caught up in the gear, but it's really just about the music. I've got high and low end guitars. I play like crap on all of them.

They use maple tops that are not up to their "10" top standards to paint over with gold, black and other solid colors.

lewisbeeman - nothing lost in playing different models. People forget that it's not just the money of buying and selling guitars, it's the experiences and memories you create that really matter. Tell yourself it's OK to pay "Rent" on guitars you want to resell after a couple years. It's really cheap enjoyment regardless.
jonas brave although I agree with your overall statement, I am not for making payments on a guitar. Cash or nothing for me. I’ve had expensive stuff that I wasn’t in love with. I’ve play “budget” guitars I’ve loved and vice versa. Currently because I am a college student, on a tighter budget, I am interested in building from scratch and fixing up cheaper stuff. I have found great enjoyment building them. And I also like the reward of having a killer guitar with Squier on the headstock.

You really do there simply an amazing instrument!
I have 4 SE's with a new compensated nut (a must if you ask me...the neck is pretty much perfectly in tune everywhere) and seymore duncans and locking tuners....and you HAVE to change the bridge.....so the SE will set you back about $3-400....$300 worth of electronics and a couple hours work and you really have a nice guitar that if stolen won't make you cry for a year. Every one of mine sets up great and plays every bit as good as a core if you ask me. The Floyd Rose has a bit of a hard time staying perfectly in tune but if it's set up right it's not that bad. Lessons learned.....I have a traditional pro LP and love it too...but it will make you stand crooked from the weight but I love it too. ALL of which are blacked out in every way.....sorry...fetish
A great compliment to a LP is a PRS CE22. The snap of the maple is really nice if you already have a LP. Seek one out that's used and from the previous generation (pre 2010 or thereabouts). The new version has a thinner top, shallow bevel carve and the neck is 3 piece flat sawn with a scarf joint. The old ones had a half inch top, full violin carve and a straight grain quarter sawn neck.
I see no reason why you can't have one of each. They are all very different instruments. I've been in the mindset of cleaning house and selling all my OK guitars with the goal of getting one great one. I have a great Les Paul. Now I need that great Strat. Will also be looking into PRS for those situations when I need versatility.

The Custom 24 has more clarity but the Les Paul just sounds meaner and angrier. Qualities I like in a rock n roll guitar
Nothing sounds like a lp with some dirt in the tone. The cleans are debatable. But for me prs guitars miss the depth that lps have

I have both guitars, PRS is the most versatile and sounds almost as good as Gibson. I met Paul Reed Smith in 1977 thru my roommate in college, his younger brother Charlie.
I prefer the feel of a PRS more than a Les Paul, it feels like I have to fight against Les Pauls to play them which some people prefer, but not me. The PRS is more suited to modern players for sure.
I always feel like I am “fighting” with my Gibson as well. My PRS plays for me practically.

I bought Paul’s Guitar yesterday in Honey Color. It’s amazing...I also have the Tremonti which I love. My Gibson LP is cool though and I don’t hate on it by any means. I find myself gravitate towards the PRS though....just beautiful guitars.

I have both guitars. The PRS has the best tuning stability of any guitar I've played. The Gibson struggles in that category, but the scale length on a Gibson is just so easy to play compared to anything else. The PRS has amazing clean tone and the build quality is better than a Les Paul standard in my opinion. Both are great guitars, but I like my PRS better.
The playing feel and snap / aggressiveness of the LP aren't exactly replicated by PRS. It's slicker but a bit too refined for its own sake no matter how you dig in.
Play a PRS 594.. basically a 24.5 scale.. plays like butter and the 58/15lts are to me the best paf I have ever heard
I've had a PRS in mind for a while, the build quality looks another level however in this video the Les Paul tone is hands-down the winner for me in all but the bridge pick up dirty where I'm equally thrilled. So I'm a bit deflated now, both stunning to look at, thanks for posting.
You need to try a 594 McCarty with 58/15lt pickups. The 57/09 pickups are supposed to be close to Gibson, but the high end PRS guitars…$4k+ are amazing
Yep everytime I read comments people convince me I want a tele or a higher end PRS. But everytime I watch videos and hear the tones, it’s always a LP I seem to want most. Same with a bass. Everyone convinced of a P or Jazz Bass but everytime I hear a video of tones, it’s always a MM Stingray I enjoy the most. Trust your ears.
PRS most versatile guitar I ever owned. You can play everything from jazz to death metal and, never goes out of tune
I’d say it’s a tie between the custom 24 and telecaster, but kind of in different ways. If you like that little bit more of a les Paul feel to your tone go custom 24, want that fender twang side of the spectrum? Go tele.

@@RUARI-mi1yt both are great in their own right, coming from a builders perspective. PRS makes great guitars, however the telecaster has been and will likely always be one of the highest sold and recorded guitars out there. I like a variety, imo it’s another voice you’re just choosing to miss out on.

That surprised me... The LP had a lot of clarity in all 3 positions that that PRS didn't seem to have. The pickups in the LP are def interesting. Great A/B video.

Agree. Both sounded great, but to my ears the LP had a lot more clarity, while the PRS just came off a tad muddier. I'd be happy with either in my arsenal!
I own both (though my 2017 PRS has the 85/15s) and this is a debate every time I go to practice. The LP sounds more authentic to me for classic rock, but overall I prefer the clarity and chime of the PRS. The PRS also sounds way better in the split modes (I LOVE position 4) than the LP.
The clarity and chime of the PRS was exactly was I was trying to obtain from my Gibsons but never could. I love my CE22!
I have both as well. I like both. There's just something about a PRS that warms the cockles of my heart.

PRS is everything i love about a good guitar, perfect for me.
Listening to this, I was surprised that I clearly preferred the LP. Its tone has a subtlety and complexity that is strangely missing in the PRS. The PRS has a warmer, fatter sound and may cut through a bit more, but it's not singing like the LP. Maybe I'm missing something, but there are countless guitars out there that sound just like the expensive PRS. Or at least the one being played here. It lacks a distinctive character. Of course, it's got the more ergonomic shape. Wish Gibson did something on this front.
Why do you put a superb flame maple top on it, then cover it with gold paint?

$o you can $ay you have one, that's why. Exclusivity works like nothing else.
Weight too, maple is a lot lighter.
When talking Les Paul vs everything else. Even the cheapest les paul will produce this classic thick tone that we know and love. Other guitars don't have this distinctive sound. Les paul tone is great thats why anyone wants a les paul but as a main guitar for me its a no. First of all the LP shape is great to look at but not that comfortable and second of all the thickness of the LP tone will allow for nothing less than that. The PRS is way more versatile way more proper for the player (as far as comfort is concerned) and some argue that it's better built with better intonation. For a main guitar the PRS is yes yes even the SE models are great, the LP is a great guitar to have just not as a main one. My personal opinion
Nail on the head.
For a stage guitar where the last 5% of sound is not as crucial as staying in tune, being comfortable and having a wang-bar if you want it - the PRS wins. Other than the presence of that classic outline of the binding that is visible from 200 yds away, the LP has no big advantage on stage.
But man.... when you need that classic blast of chunky rhythm in a tune...that attitude....nothing beats the LP, imho. Not even close.
An LP to me is like Paul Bunyan just tore a piece of a tree off and nailed some strings to the resultant log - just to whack you in the face with it - beautifully.

As a new PRS Custom 24 owner, I agree.
I’ve got both but no that’s not true. You have to compare it to a “good” Gibson though. I admit they’re not all up there but once you get ahold of a good Gibson it is all a matter of choice. For me I like one for a while than I like the other one for some time. It always changes.
Also my favorite prs guitar is a custom 22 actually a p22 (custom 22 with a piezo pickup and dual outputs). I like the neck pup way more on a 22fret prs.
MrEkin03 - agree that 22 frets are better than 24 frets for neck pickup tone. Plus there's just less wood carved away around the neck join. Hell Yngwie plays only 21 fret necks, so fellas don't be afraid to do some work for your notes.
I own both and absolutely love each for their own unique qualities. I do have two PRS guitars though and only one Gibson.. Speaks for itself?
The LP had more presence and personality. The PRS was smoother. I like the rawness of the LP.

Something about PRS pickups that lack character. They're very well balanced, but sterile to my ears. I've noticed I don't feel that way about ones I've heard with swapped pickups. I don't know maybe this sounds dumb, but maybe they're a little too noiseless, and balanced.
Something unique about that Les Paul tone that I might never get tired of.
That gold top on the PRS is beautiful but what’s even more gorgeous is the epic flame maple underneath. Some people converted their gold top les Paul’s from the mid fifties to a burst because they had such vibrant flame maple caps on them and everybody was chasing the “burst guitar” look.
With that look, that Les Paul can sound like the worst guitar on earth and I would still pick it
Very interesting comparison, and once again my expectations were busted. For perhaps the first time in a PRS - LP shootout, the PRS came out on top for me. I've always felt the PRS guitars sounded thin and kind of one-dimensional. Not so for this test. Good job, Darrell.
P.S. I love the looks of both the Gibson and the PRS... but I'm still a Strat guy.
Which flagship guitar was your favorite?
To my ear the LP Standard had a sort of raw or "rough around the edges" bite, while the PRS CU24 was balanced and composed in every scenario thrown at it :)

Darrell Braun Guitar Often imitated, never duplicated, there’s just something about the Les Paul. That raw, rough around the edges bite just does it for me. Although the PRS does have a great sound.

love the sounds that are possible from each of these. However, the PRS gold top is not something that would shout out to me "Hey! pick me up and give me a go." well played regardless.
I've always loved a good Les Paul. But when I got my first really high-end PRS I noticed that when playing live it kind of just disappeared and felt like the music just showed up automatically. There's still a bite and sound quality to a less Paul that really can't be replicated, but a good PRS is so much more stable and reliable and has a higher playability it's really tough to beat.
Darrell would you comment please on what you think about open chords on the two guitars?
I thought while listening that the LP went a little sour more because of tuning than pickups and construction.

Agree.. to my ears it's got more charachter, is more open.sounding and sounds more invigorating to play (to my surprize) the PRS sounds good, as well, but more pop/polished/muted.
Me too. I had really wanted to get a PRS on reputation. I was comparing my R-7 LP GT against a PRS Custom 24. THe LP won tonally everytime.
I have owned a few Les Pauls and 2 PRS (CE22 & CU24). I love my Les Paul especially on classic rock numbers but whenever I plug in the PRS it’s like a Hi-Fi version of humbuckers. The clarity is just insane and I sometime really think the PRS could be that one guitar if my life depends on it (they are really like Swiss army knife type of guitar as they do Strat sounds super convincingly too!). If you can afford both then you definitely should

they sounded more similar at the neck position, but the LP rang thru louder and crisper at the bridge, (with my headphones and settings anyway!) That PRS sure was smooth tho. I have lower end LP and PRS guitars similarly priced to each other and different in tone & feel, but pretty equal in quality. I think you've inspired me to do my own test just for myself!
i cant hear the differences between the two when the tone goes dirty,but PRS sounds clarity and bright.
Respectfully disagree with the cons of the LP. I personally love my LP in my lap, and I just don’t ever feel as though it is difficult to reach high up the board, or anything that seems difficult to me. I do enjoy the reduced weight of the PRS, and I love the tone of both. I feel that both are a great playing experience not just the PRS. Just me I guess. Awesome video!
I'd be too hard for me to choose between the 2. I'd have to go by comfort. I'd probably consider getting those fancy guitar straps with cushioning if I choose the les paul. I hate guitars that are too heavy cause I will play for 3 hours straight sometimes
Darrell, either one of these would be welcome in my home! Both beautiful and they sound really full-throated. Given Gibson's reported quality issues lately I think I'd likely lean towards the PRS.
Hi David, I've played but not owned a Gibson guitar. I have several friends who bought Gibson over the past couple of years and they have had some issues. Still, if someone gave me one for Christmas I wouldn't be unhappy :-)
I do agree in part that Gibson's QC problems are overstated but that doesn't mean they match up to PRS standards either. The thing with PRS is that they are incredibly consistent, try one and you have tried them all, inspect one and you have inspected them all - they are so consistent that you can buy online and get what you expect without having to inspect or try.
With Gibson, there is a greater range within the same model. Of course a LOT are great, with very little issues at all (other than those typically associated with LP's like tuning stability thanks to the break angle at the headstock), but there are a number with 'quality' issues too - some very minor like stain bleeding into the binding to glue not being cleaned properly around the neck joint, to more 'major' issues like a gap at the neck joint. Its better to go to store and inspect the guitars, play them and try and find one of the great ones.
Talking of finish, PRS guitars have a thinner but harder wearing finish where as Gibsons are thicker but will wear through over time - the more you play, the quicker it will wear and that may well be a 'plus' for some - much more likely to 'relic' but a PRS is more likely to look like it was 'new' - unless you drop it or abuse of course. PRS also have much better customer service too...
Horses for courses, Gibson will always sell because of their iconic history and nostalgia. They are 'great' guitars but not as consistent as PRS. That could also be down to the fact that PRS don't make anywhere near as many guitars in their US factory.
I know 'bleed' isn't the right term for modern guitars as they do scrape them as you say but it was just a term that people will be familiar with and associate to this issue - even if its not 'technically' correct. I have seen Gibsons that haven't been 'cleaned' perfectly and left some residual stain on the binding myself - and not on 'heritage' models. The point I was making about the finishes was more the long term wear - which some may prefer compared to having their guitar look like 'new' after years of playing like a PRS will.
That still doesn't excuse the neck joint issues that I have also seen - some where the glue that has been squashed out isn't cleaned, smoothed etc, even one or two where there is a small 'gap' between the neck and body which to me is worse than having a bit of excess glue around the neck joint.
The overall point of my comment was that whilst these issues do and can occur, they are not as widespread or as common as the internet would have you believe. There are some with flaws, with quality issues but there are still a lot of great, quality instruments too. I was agreeing with you that it is overstated but its still better to go and try a Gibson yourself where as with PRS being more consistent, you can literally buy online and get what you expect, have a very consistent quality and be pretty much like every other PRS in that model/wood combination. There is a MUCH bigger difference between the best and worst Gibson than PRS - not to say that the 'best' Gibson can't be just as good as the best PRS in terms of build quality. You can argue about the quality of the parts, the nut etc but in terms of build, the best Gibson can match the best PRS but they also seem to let more 'sub-standard' guitars through than PRS do.
At my local Guitar Center, about half the Gibsons there have arguable finishes (playability/tone etc aren't affected IMO)... that said, I play primarily LPs and SGs, so you just have to find one that's decent.
uneven application of nitro, frets not completely finished at the edges, and pieces of sawdust stuck in the finish around the neck.
this is way less prevalent on the upper tier Gibsons though, and is more something I see on SG standard level guitars and below. def different scenario vs a decade+ ago.

Was surprised that I liked the PRS tone over the Paul, esp the neck pickup. I never played a PRS but I jammed with a LP once and my shoulder hurt after a while. I must say, however, that EC's tone on the John Mayall "Beano" LP is one of the best I've ever heard.
Every time i watch guitars i cannot believe how beautiful the les pauls are. Any les paul is daamn amazing i love it even though i dont have an electric guitar at all
PRS guitar just almost always end up sounding sterile to me. I want to like them, but they just don't do it for me.
Keep in mind this has just been my experience with the guitars I have, but I tend to use my prs for higher distortion playing. The les paul can do it but doesn't shine like the prs does with loads upon loads of gain, but for everything south of ridiculously high gain, I immediately use my les paul
I have always preferred the aesthetic of the Les Paul over the PRS, and the one in this video is stunning, but I honestly thought that I would prefer to tone of the PRS.I was actually kind of surprised. While both guitars sound fantastic (I'm sure your excellent playing had a lot to do with that, Darrell), I preferred the Gibson. Of course, good tone is subjective, but that bite just cut through the mix and really sounded good to me. You really can't go wrong with either one.

The PRS looks like a Les Paul meets an SG mixed in with a Stratocaster. It's some kinda abomination. The SG is insane. Love a good Les Paul too.
Gibson sound better , PRS sounds lighter
I enjoyed that video good work great playing too. The Gibson has a distinct tone which we can all recognize. I think the PRS has it's own tone I feel the PRS more exudes the tone of the player more than the Gibson. PRS makes awesome quality guitars and Gibson's quality at times hasn't always been that great. I prefer PRS especially for the weight issue and the looks are awesome and playability is great as well.
I had to make this decision for myself and chose PRS guitars. The quality is just better and as a result I have 23 of them.

@@MarlonKingShow Just had my PRS McCarty 594 delivered ohhh, 52 hrs ago. Absolutely love it. Makes my Strat feel like it's from Toys R Us. ( a bit harsh ) but dammnnn. I'm using a Mesa Mark V 25 amp and my God, makes a simple bar chord sound like an angel is singing. I was going to be cremated but can't do that now. Getting a hi end coffin and she's coming with !! Lol

Used to own a LP. Now there are 3 PRS's in its place. I run with several different bands and their lead players always ask me to bring one of the PRS's for them to play. It is very noticeable when the PRS is singing versus when they are playing a tele, strat or LP. The other part of that is when the people in the audience make comments on the same subject. There are many very good sounding guitars out there but PRS has just seemed to step in front of most others now days. More and more players are moving to PRS. Sound and build quality of PRS speaks volumes and people are taking note. Great video comparison by the way.
Gibson just a bit too bright. Def solidified my desire (and plan for this coming week) for a PRS. Just sounds so much more well balanced.
Congratulations. Just bought myself a Black Gold Burst McCarty 594. Beautiful. Plays nicer than it looks and in my opinion, easily one of the nicest looking guitars being made NO! EVER MADE. Was delivered in 90 + degrees out and hrs and hrs in the back of an UPS truck and still was in PERFECT tune. Feels really nice anf very well balanced.

The Les Paul sounded nicer to my ear without accompaniment, but in the mix the CU24 cuts through and shines.

Both instruments have recorded absolutely iconic rock tones. For me the greatest lead tone ever recorded is Sweet Child O' Mine. The PRS is responsible for some of the greatest heavy rock tones ever. Anything Mark Tremonti plays just sounds phenomenal.
I'm not a musician or a guitar player, but I like to listen and my ears were voting for the PRS. One of my favorite guitar players, in live shows in clubs in Dallas and St. Louis, was Bugs Henderson (RIP)... he was a PRS guy.

Is it just time, or did the PRS sound better? I love both and have both, but mine is a Gibson custom 1958 historic reissue, and I have the PRS McCarty 594, but I thought the PRS killed the Les Paul in this video.
I think I like the Gibson tone better but ergonomics, lightweightness, accessibility to higher frets, 24th fret, and tremelo system made me fall in love with the prs
Les Pauls are really heavy, and the back of the body has no contouring, so after a couple of hours playing one my back is sore and my torso feels bruised. Still, I love the way they play.

The PRS sounds a little "cleaner", especially when playing high notes. It's easier to put it in the mix, and to hear every single tone better in a mix with drums, bass, rhythm guitar, etc. But it has less characteristic sound, compared to well known rock bands (radio, live, CDs, LPs). Concerning lower tones, the PRS sounds more mushy, just in contrast to its own high notes. By playing lower parts, the Gibson is more assertive.
There's nothing bad with PRS. There's just something good with LP
PRS sounds like a Les Paul that stopped drinking and became less fun.

I've owned both Les Paul and PRS guitars and my impression is that the PRS is a much more refined instrument in every element of guitar building, but the Classic '57 gestures on a LP will never be entirely dismissed.

Gibson and PRS should collaborate and make the Les Paul Reed Smith
PRS all day my shoulder is sore looking at the LP.
James Murphy actually the standards they have been making for a while are not that heavy at all.
James Murphy - your local guitar store is probably collecting some heavy shelf turds from Gibson. Fewer people buy the ten + pounders so they sit around. Keep on the lookout for new ones coming in, or else order in a model you want.
The newer Standard LP has a weight relieved mahogany back, and some guitars in the 1990s have pretty light mahogany if you see those around on Reverb or Craigslist. 'Good wood era.' I love the chunky sound of a good sounding eight pound Les Paul.

I don’t know why but I just simply adore the bridge pick up on a les Paul more than any other guitar
I’ve kinda always thought PRS sounded pretty sterile for some reason.
Overall I prefer the PRS (not too surprising as I'm a Fender fan), but to give the Gibson some kudos, it held its own in the solo portion. That's the only place where I gave it the victory.

The PRS was by far the best sounding for me. Someone else's ear will probably differ.
When playing the guitars by themselves, I thought the Les Paul had a richness and warmth that the PRS didn't match with no loss of clarity. In the mix however, the PRS cut through much better with every note and nuance sounding clear and distinct.
Gibson Les Paul is the absolutely PURE ROCK.

The Les Paul has more clean zing to my ears. Both fine instruments. The Les for my personal taste.
Not much has changed for Gibson, they are still WAAAAY over priced, 67 year old design flaws and some are still very heavy. The tone is still the benchmark and unbeatable.
PRS is too sharp sound...Gibson is more natural sound, i take Gibson

I like the colors more on the Les Paul, but the shape of the PRS more. PRS tone for me though

You really have to be a diehard Gibson fan to opt for the LP in a head to head:
The PRS is lighter, better balanced, with a smoother faster action, and far more comfortable to play, ergonomics-wise.
The LP does get somewhat of a thicker tone, with beefier mids-But that one point in its favor would not make me choose it.
I think the best option for an LP Gibson diehard could be a Mccarty 594.
I persnally don't dig the customs, but I just got the mccarty 594 and wow! I got the double cut. It's just amazing in every way and I feel so at home since its very gibsonian in every way.
I own both but to say that you have to be a Gibson Les Paul fan to choose it over a PRS is pointless when you mentioned the thicker tone on the LP. Why you ask, because people may enjoy that tone better and prioritize it over the weight etc

i found the prs custom 24 at gc for $798.00 what a deal rite.
The LP sounds spectacular, detailed, etc vs the PRS sounds quenched, muffly, etc, in comparison. Understand all the issues with the LP itself...answer: ditch the PRS pickups and install any of the dozens of options, and why not the burst buckers themselves.
I like to see the PRS vs Fender...you know what should be compared :D

I have both standard ranges of the LP and the custom 24 and I can easily say that both of these guitars are fantastic sounding as well as appropriately comfortable. Absolutely can’t go wrong with either. Another great vid!
a funny detail is that ... you compare a Les Paul in a not-so-common color that is a PRS common color with a PRS with a not-so-common color for PRS but YES FOR LES PAUL.
