- Yes are one of the most innovative and successful rock bands of all time with a career that now spans five decades. In 2003 the band made their first appearance at the Montreux Festival, despite having a long association with the town itself (they recorded there frequently in the seventies). It was a triumphant night and is regarded by both the band members and fans as probably the finest Yes gig ever to be filmed.

Reminds me of a Turk sailor who introduced me to Yes sound in 1971 and was taken in so well.
This tune makes me think of Return to forever, a very exciting jazz-rock band with Chick Corea, Al Dimeola, Lenny White and Stanley Clarke. A lot of similarities, big suites, odd time signatures... RTF was a little more complicated as they were jazzmen (two were ex Miles Davis' musicians), but I love the spirit of this era, very written music with place for improvisation. nothing in common with shit like Nirvana or Artic monkeys.
Steve Howe plays such complex chord & note phrasing without missing a note, super high skills, underrated guitarist 👍

Steve Howe was never ever underrated. He is infact one of the most important guitarists of the prog era.
Just the opposite Rick. He is overrated. Everyone knows he's the best. Just not a showy guy.

There is no place to hide in this band. Every member a virtuoso. There are no holes in their songs.
Even my wife who knows nothing about Yes knows this song because I’ve played it a thousand times throughout the years. It’s just a masterpiece.
Forget about the Cleveland Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: Montreux was the real induction to the hall of good music for this band.

Honestly dude, I discovered this song while sober and knew instantly it would be a psychedelic blast! Gave me closed eye hallucinations like no other.
Got to be one of the most beautiful songs ever written.. I have loved the band since the early 70's.. Seen them in three countries on two separate continents.
This was the best lineup of the band! Everyone is a genius in their craft. A band with a unique style and sound. It is a shame it took so long for them to get into Hall of Fame.
I’m a 70yr old retired bass player. Saw yes in the 70’s. 5th row. That night Chris Squire became my idol next to God . Played in local bands for 50yrs. Even bought a black and white Rick. Never could play like Chris. What a God given talent in a great great band. Miss him 😞

Friends of mine were inspired by this kind of “classical rock” in the 70’s and formed a band named Osiris and in turn inspired me to love Yes. Saw them twice in concert in So Cal. Anaheim stadium and the Forum. Some of the best times and music of my life.
Possibly the greatest bass guitarist in the modern era and most people had never heard of him except the fans. Sadly missed

I never understood why Peart was considered to be so great. But that’s just my opinion like yours is an opinion. They spread the work around and the profits equally. One part percussion and lyrics, one part bass and vocals and one part guitar. I never listened carefully to Rush until just around a year ago when I watched several videos of interviews and concerts.

“Heart of the Sunrise” (1971) was co-authored by Jon Anderson, Bill Bruford and Chris Squire. It clocks in at 10:34‼️
Jon Anderson singled it out as one of his favorite Yes compositions and explained how it was conceived for live performance : “‘Heart of the Sunrise’ is a great piece. One of the things that was always important for Yes was to create music for the stage to perform, not to make a record. We were lucky to go in the studio and make records, but our main game was to put on a show and entertain the audience, and in doing so we put that into the record. So by ‘71, ‘72, we were stretching our wings to do longer-form pieces on stage. I got into this whole thing about doing a 20-minute piece, because in those days you could only have 20 minutes on each side of an album. If it had been 30 minutes, it would have been a 30-minute piece.”
This complex composition with various time signatures and a classical influence shows off Yes’ virtuosity. Jon Anderson stated : “I’d been listening a lot to Stravinsky at that time, who was quite an amazing composer, and the band were fans of modern music at that time. Weather Report and bands like that were doing far reaching jazz-rock influenced music. So we were jumping into different structural composition.”
Interestingly, the vocals don’t come in until about 3:40 in, giving “Heart of the Sunrise” one of the longest intros in rock history‼️ 💙🌅💜
Such a mastery of their instruments and creativity. The duel between Wakeman's organs and Steve Howe's guitar. Magic. Jon Anderson vocal is still so powerful and in tone.Chris Squire can still be the centre piece of any band.

These guys & others from the same period didn't just write 'songs', they composed suites & symphonies..so many incredibly gifted musicians, demonstrating their genius. Remember the limitations of technology 40 & 50 years ago...these legends wrote & played such amazing music. Never seen since!!

Couldn't get enough of this and the Fragile album my first Yes album....played it over and over in 74.
Steve Howe is one of if not the greatest prog rock - rock guitarist ever, he is in the top five of greatest guitarists overall to me and other Yes fans. As it was with ELP and Genesis, .every single musician was at the top of the highest echelon of musicians. We were all so fortunate to grow up on this music,. to be able to have seen ELP on every tour from Tarkus (when Yes was their opening act) up to but not including Love Beach for ELP, and for Yes anything after Relayer was not interesting to me. I have tried, but those early incarnations, and the way that Alan White was able to slide into the drum set and get pretty close to the perfect Bill Bruford. Yes had troubles with keyboardists but that middle period is unmatched by any measure.

hlamart I saw them live in LB CA during the Yessongs tour. Gasp! Each was a complete virtuoso at their game. And they showed the light on each. Indeed, as talented as each individual was, they were greater than the sum of their parts in a magical way! Never again! Their musicianship was on an incredible scale!

O...M...G. One of my favorite songs. I remember hearing it for the first time in the movie Buffalo 66 and I knew I had to look it up and buy the album. Greatness.
I never tire of watching Steve Howe play on stage. Competence, confidence, both to the max, but most importantly, a really soulful player. A rare combination. I saw Yes in 1973 with elbows on the stage, and it was a huge influence on my playing and writing. They occasionally played as an orchestra of electric instruments and my young mind was opened wide by that. I wasn’t then, and am still not, thrilled by virtuosity for its own sake which they were certainly ‘guilty’ of, but they were a real band making beautiful art of rock. They grooved, which was kinda the point and always will be.

I believe Yes were so great and the type of music they composed was that they grew up in era where European classical music was still prevalent. I am sure this had a strong influence on them.
My first introduction to Yes was the Fragile album, then I became enamored with The Yes album. The Tales Of Topographical Oceans was an LP, a vinyl record, two actually, that I literally wore out. Close To The Edge, and Relayer were more incredible albums, then they started to sing about Don’t Kill The Whales and Yes lost me at that point. Latter on the members of Yes realize that it was the second through fifth albums is what core fans wanted to hear, and that is what they played when they rejoined to tour again.
I will say that Chris Squire, may he rest in peace, though along with Stanly Clarke (a different genre) made me decide to give up the guitar for bass guitar. I even bought a Rickenbacker 4001 bass guitar strung with Rotosound medium gauge bass strings just to get Chris Squire sound.
I feel I was fortunate to had seen Yes live five times, that in high school I made friends with a group of Yes Heads, and more important was Yes was the only band my father would let me play their albums on are home stereo through the speakers.
Yes is a progressive rock band that composed music for intellectuals not for the likes of ACDC fans.

Totally agree with whoever published this. Saw them live years ago at De Montford Hall, Leicester when Buggles joined them for Drama, and later in Edinburgh for Open Your Eyes. Sang along to every "oldie" at each one. One of my favourite bands.
I wish Chris was still alive so there could be a re-union of the best ever lineup. A choirboy, showman, but we all still loved him. RIP Chris.

Vi a Yes cuántas veces vinieron a Buenos Aires, recuerdo especialmente, el primero de ellos en el estadio Vélez Sarsfield ,en febrero de 1985. Inolvidable show, el final con Starship Trooper fue apotéotico. Larga vida a Yes,no puedo dejar de emocionarme cuando aún hoy escucho "The Gates of Delirium" o "Yours is no Disgrace" o "And You And I" o "Heart of The Sunrise" o "Parallels" y tantas otras genialidades compuesta por tan tremenda banda.

Sí, flaco, pero a Yes le tocó la pálida de ser el primer grupo británico que tocó en Argentina luego de la guerra de 1982, tuvieron problemas con “la pesada” en Rosario, tal como The Cure los tuvo en 1987. Muy mal mezclar politica con arte.

I love watching these guys perform live! I've seen them twice and this is just a an amazing rendition of Heart of the Sunrise. Watching Steve Howe with his deadpan expression playing the fire out of his ax is just priceless!

Jon's voice makes this one of my Yes favorites. It really can make this 60 y.o. grown man cry. I feel every nerve ending (and beginning?), tingle, dance, stretch, moan, vibrate, tremble, quiver and oscillate all at the same time. There is going to be an incredibly utterly horrible day for me some time in the not to distant future. Unless of course, I get there first.
And THAT, kids, is what good music was like before corporate entities and algorithms killed it - when musicians wrote, arranged and played creatively. I feel sorry your generation missed out on it.

One of my sisters used to listen to The Yes Album and Fragile and Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven all the time in the early to mid 1970's. When we went on vacation to Upper Michigan she had this horrid monophonic cassette player always going, but I had no idea then how bad it was. Even now when I hear this stuff it still brings me back to my childhood and those summer days in and around Huron Bay... gives me a weird melancholy feeling as if the music was actually echoing down all those years.

When I was 13 I listened to a bootleg 8 track tape with 4 songs and to this day I can never get enough of Yes . Their music is so fulfilling for the soul!

I like some current bands, such as Epica. But, for instance, their keyboard work is not as passionate as here. I would argue that this is very passionate music.

i saw their performance at the cream farewell concert in 1968,and then so many times and even roadied for them for a while in the early 70s,and its a shame that way it split into 2 camps for long while,however, it is so good to still be watching this at 5 .30 in the morning....
