Bill's humble, low key demeanor reminds me a lot of George Harrison. Both were such cool guys who never seemed to take advantage of their fame by acting condescending or egotistical. I like that.
You gotta love the fact that Bill hasn't changed or modified his hairstyle even slightly over his entire career in the public's eye. The bangs have always stayed.
Hilarious. Bill and Charlie being straight faced next to Mick and Keith being outwardly animated was the perfect dynamic. Amazed that they live to be in their 80s.
Guys - this was the Kenny Everett Show. It was a comedy programme where Kenny would play various stereotypes like Sid Snot and Cupid Stunt. Kenny's humour was edgy and sometimes didn't work but I would say he was always watchable and not much today is. Sadly lost to AIDS in the 1990s.
- Satisfaction - It's unbelievable how many people think the bass just mimics the guitar line in this song, which would have been the predictable thing to do. Instead, Wyman plays a loping counter-rhythm against it, based on the two root chords. To me, it sounds derived from songs like "Born in Chicago". Brilliant idea, and one of the components that makes the beat to that song so infectious. There are plenty of other examples, the guy was a real original in my opinion.
I vaguely remember this interviewer. He did risque stuff all the time. Bill wyman played along knowingly even though it did make him uncomfortable still
Bill... what a legend... and WHAT a bassist. I play bass, and Bill's a bloody virtuoso. Doubters- listen to the improvised 'Fingerprint File'. He's amazing.
Sorry to break this to you, but that’s Mick Taylor. I’m a huge fan of Bill’s bass playing, but a surprising amount of the really catchy bass lines from Stones tunes are Keith or Ronnie.
"Would you mind if the camera came in close and gave everyone at home home a good look at those famous lips". Lol. Remembered Everett's shows back in he 80s when I was growing up. Really funny (be good to get them on dvd), not sure how much is available though.
@lowend100 Interesting comments. Since you're a bass player, I think I have another listen. What tracks would you recommend that nicely show off his playing?
Or Jumpin Jack Flash - the original, studio single. Wyman just pumps relentlessly on the root note, which gives it a drive that's completely missing from the live, Daryl Jones version.
I'm a bass player, and am familiar with a lot of the great bassists in the world, and there are plenty. Like Willie Weeks, who played on Fingerprint File and It's Only Rock & Roll. I'm very picky too, and I think Bill Wyman is a great bass player. There's no one else that plays like him. For my money, the Stones' rhythm section sound went way downhill, when Daryl Jones replaced him. He was part of the thing that made that band tick, a real innovator. Daryl's a better technician, but who cares?
The thing I like about Wyman is the unpredictable way he handled some very typical songs and rhythms, especially early on in the Stones recording career. His idea of how to handle the beat on their version of "Not Fade Away", is great. I've never heard another bass player play the song like that, although it is now something that I've stolen from ol' Bill. He also plays very cool and/or innovative lines on some of these: - Have Mercy
I admire to Bill because he is really cool bass player!! He just stand there and plays the bass and lays the foundations to the Rolling Stones sound, infact he is the SOUND!!!!
just a fact: At age 47, the Rolling Stones' bassist, Bill Wyman, began a relationship with 13-year old Mandy Smith, with her mother's blessing. Six years later, they were married, but the union only lasted seventeen months. Not long after, Bill's 30-year-old son Stephen married Mandy's mother, age 46. That made Stephen a stepfather to his former stepmother, Mandy. Think it also made him a stepfather to his own DAD!! -well as they say its all Rock n Roll!!
And Four Weddings was one of like 8 VHS tape movies I received as a gift, for the record, one Christmas--only stinker in the bunch, and I gave it to some poor soul, "Only 10 minutes watched", practically new.
Hey Dead Pan Killer, I play bass too and agree that Fingerprint File is an absolutely amazing performance. Only thing is, it's not Bill Wyman playing on that track.... It's the great Willie Weeks, who also plays on the studio version of "Only Rock & Roll"

The Stones have always been Keith, Charlie, Bill and Ian Stewart. Saw Bill play on his 70th birthday at Preston and he did a bass solo (unprepared) he was great.
@peverill LOL Bill was and still is Charlie's best mate and vice versa. You call yourself that big a stones fan and you are bashing ol' Bill? Even Keith misses him.

Listen to Crossroads, not just Clapton’s brilliant guitar but Bruce’s even better bass playing.
But Bills playing was always too low in the mix/volume
See how uncomfortable Wyman is about Everett touching his leg?
