    I see the comments correcting his pronounciation and they're right, it's not pronounced that way so correcting him isn't wrong on their part.
    BUT ALSO, I'm so glad this is even being called 'Dal Tadka' and not 'Lentil Soup topped with Sauteed Garlic'. ( I'm still not over what BuzzFeed did to Gulab Jamuns -.- )
    And, stop tadka shaming Tan, people. Different people use different tadkas. You can use garlic, mustard, onions, chopped chillies or literally anything that adds flavour.

      No on should ever be over anything Buzzfeed has done.

      True, just a tarka with, say, chopped garlic, and maybe even some zeera works really well. It's delicious. We add some gol mirch to it as well, but we have subbed that for just plain Hari mirch as well. It's best not to restrict yourself, mix and match, and you'll make headway towards a better reciple, innovation is important. The mixing is a little different too, we prefer to keep the tarka as a layer on the top. That was different, I suppose. Also, for the Pakistani peeps, it's tarka, the "d", actually wasn't there to begin with in Hindi as well. I think it was explained by an Indian poet. I don't remember the name, but I will link him if I find him.

And its easy enough for me to follow you know🤓 People who choose to look at things negatively and say that they are annoyed about things that other people just do or say differently, are not people we should be paying attention to♥️ At least have the respect for yourself and another person, to bring it up nicely. • @ambicanaithani8335
      @ambicanaithani8335 5 ปีที่แล้ว +59

      Steven Brown he has pakistani heritage. Indians and pakistanis were literally the same till the partition and therefore we have a lot of shared culture. We feel great about being repped by an openly gay man. Read our literature its full of lgbt and even intersectional representation. And the white supremacist tone with which you say “your culture” i just wanna say this to you honey dont get all your education on the internet honey pls get a degree in social sciences before throwing ur prejudiced hate everywhere

    • @Shelsight
      @Shelsight 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @Steven Brown Steven Brown, I think you need to grab a dictionary and look up the words "culture" and "heritage". And maybe read up on India and Pakistan (or just try reading full stop) before you decide to make statements on behalf of their citizens? Whomever they want to represent them, I'm guessing it's not an ill-informed homophobic bigot. Most WASPs wouldnt want you speaking on our behalf either...

    • @darcybhaiwala7057
      @darcybhaiwala7057 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @Steven Brown you have a really narrow definition of Indian, and are woefully unaware of how diverse the nationality actually is. Everything you listed is a quality of an ABCD that ABCDs struggle with BECAUSE we aren't considered "true Indians/Pakistanis". Tan is validating our existence

  • @selenapink98

    ghee works better in tarkah bc the milk content in the butter burns too quick. you could also use cooking oil like mustard oil, (common in punjab) or even olive oil which isnt traditional but adds a fun flavour. also we add onion to the garlic it makes a big difference

      Until I got married I had no idea that Masoor daal (whole one) traditionally had a garlic tarka.
      My chachas and my mom didn't like the taste so my grandmother used onions and green chilies.
      When I started cooking it I added ginger as well.
      For this ☝️daal that he made I do onion, garlic, dried red chilies, and cumin seeds. Then coriander and garam masala on top.
      Nothing like a good bowl of daal with kachumar salad!
      Just torturing myself while I'm fasting. 🤣

    I LOVE LOVE LOVE how accessible and easy this recipe is. I'm Indian and have made more complicated things but it's nice when someone shows an easy indian recipe to introduce the world to brown cuisine. Also IT'S CHEAP. Nothing is cheaper than lentils and rice. Truly a good recipe for people learning how to cook but can't afford more expensive proteins.

    His pronunciation might be regional from where he grew up in England. I studied Indian vegetarian cooking from a master ( an authentic Indian guru) and I was a food snob for years, thinking his way and pronunciation was RIGHT. Then I realized that I was being unnecessarily judgmental and making myself better than others. That’s not the goal of all the yoga I was doing. I’m much more forgiving of and actually appreciative of people who don’t do life exactly the way I do.

      This is the slightly quicker way of doing it and I would do it a bit like Tan when I'm lazy. Just add the lentils to the water, along with the spices, some garlic, onions, chili, tomato and butter. Then just leave it to boil. Since my family likes the more runny version of dal, it cooks in just about 20-25 mins

    Tadka, also known as tarka, refers to both a technique and the infused oil it produces, which adds an extra layer of flavor and texture in many Indian dishes. also called chaunk, chhonk, baghaar, and other names, depends on your region.
