The movie is actually good. But in other ways. Not in story or character but it shows the reality of Roman depravity. How human beings were fed to wild baboons or how 2 men are forced to fight eachother to the death at a royal banquet for entertainment. People had no morality 2,000 years ago. There was no such thing as human dignity or the right to life. We've come a long way in 2,000 years.

The whole idea of making a sequel to Gladiator felt so cash grabby and unnecessary. Like it was a film that felt like modern classic like a Ben-hur, Lawrence of Arabia, Gone with the Wind, and now they want to add a 2 and repeat the same beats???! The studios just don't g.a.s. about the legacy of their films. They are betting on our stupid monkey brains going "ooooh thing I like before, I give money now!"

So it feels like a movie by Ridley's brother Tony Scott LOL.

100% agree. The score is horrendous, remember how it elevated the battle in the first one, in this there are scenes with no score at all. Mescal is a blank actor in this, one minute his wife dies the next scene hes laughing and joking as if its nothing. It felt like bad fan fiction and a poor bbc tv drama to me

I can appreciate directors who like to give a middle finger to audiences, but Ridley doesn't seem to care that much about the storytelling aspect anymore and that's where his recent movies fall apart. Like I enjoyed Prometheus for what it was, but it's very lacking compared to Alien, there's no heart to it.

    • @DannyKnightblade45
      @DannyKnightblade45 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

Yeah, I thought Prometheus was a beautiful looking movie with a great cast, but that great cast was mostly wasted. The story was weak, and as you mentioned, there was no heart to it. Ridley Scott's more recent movies are competently shot, but not very well written and completely soulless.

Gladiator was a stand alone film with no need for a sequel. However, if they were going to do this, a few years after the original would have been the peak time to do it not 24 years later. No one asked for this except greedy film execs.

Thanks for the review. You also have a very good point in music. Why does so much modern music in movies suck so much? Are the composers and musicians in these movies nepotism hires too or something? Like why are the music for modern movies more generic and forgettable than the actors and that's not a compliment towards the majority of modern movie actors.

Thought-provoking video. I remember when I saw the trailer for this movie and thought, “They’re making another one?” I think writing a good sequel is hard, and some stories just don’t need sequels. Sequels are meant to continue the themes and journey of the first film and build upon them. new challenges = new stakes = new character development. Three of my favorite sequels are Creed 2, Kung Fu Panda 2, and Inside Out 2. Each one felt like a natural continuation of the original plot, and took the character from Point B to Point C. One of the worst things a sequel can do is invalidate the original. Your metaphor of spitting in the original’s face captures that feeling exactly. Gladiator stands by itself, no sequel needed.

Hey Mickey, Saw the movie last night. Totally agree with everything u said , and some.
    - The writing was all over the place.
-No character evoked any kind of emotional rooting.
    - never felt like anything was at stake; no matter how hard the characters tried to make it seem so. Just did not make me care.
    - The lead actor was underwhelming and monotonous.
    - dialoges did not make any kind of emotional appeal. Just felt too superficial. Even in a tensed, serious and life threatning situation where characters are talking about overthrowing an Emperor. The gravity of it was nowhere. Was like people were just doing their lines.
The biggest let down for me was cinematography. Too many closeups and cuts in seemingly defining scenes where a broader and less rushed approach wud have been more effective.
    Did not serve my expectations.

I know some don't love all his movies but they're all so competantly made with such rich dialogue and character moments that you can't call any of them plain bad. Now, some of that has to do with the fact that he's only made 9 of them. I think if he was at 20 plus we'd prolly have a couple. Death Proof almost fits, though, not a very good movie.

It feels like it was made purely to cash in on the first movie, and that’s about it. My top three cringe moments: the CGI monkeys, the sharks in the Colosseum, and that final shot of the main hero with the old soundtrack playing in the background. I just couldn’t buy into the emotions at all.

My theater was raving. For me the representative symbol how much we as an audience have been dummyfied over the years.
This movie is qll style over subtance and a painful confrontation how the first movie did absolutely everything better 20 years ago.
Spectacle back then worked because you have much better created characters and good plot driven motives. If you nail that right, spectacle has such a bigger impact.
Intodays version its just meh. Story wise this was incredibly lazy. It gave me force awaken vibes... You fill it full of nostalgia bait, you privide fancy looking pictures et voila... The crowd is entertained. Nok of these type of movies will be talked about 20 years from now unlike first gladiator... They are forgettable fastfood consumptions you will move on from fast. But that is onfortunately what the crowds want these days and be happy.
Funny how our movie theatres has become modern day colloseum. They serve the exact same purpose

Bruh... They made a movie where Person A seeks Revenge to kill Person B. Person B is seeking Revenge to kill Person C and D (the chancellors). Person E (Denzel) is also seeking Revenge. Its a Revenge Inception. Plus it was not even specifically Pedro Pascals Character who has killed his wife. He gave Orders. In the midst of a full blown war 😐 The Equivalent to this would be an orc in middle earth which his cousin was killed by an Arrow from a foot soldier, which Aragorn has ordered to be shot. And now that one ORC is seeking Revenge directly from Aragorn. Plus the Mom of Lucius send him away as a kid. Never even searched for him. Was living lavishly in Rome with no worries or thoughts whatsoever. No informations of the whereabouts of her son. Nothing was established of that information or her seeking her son. Plus. The one guy he wanted to kill was loyal to Maximus. Yeah but this did not change the fact that he still was responsible for his wifes death. He forgave him. Just because..... Plot holes in this one are crazy .

Respectfully disagree... Ridley Scott has his hits and misses... But one thing he can never be accused of is "laziness." Was the movie perfect? Of course not. Was it historically accurate? Of course not, neither was the first film. Ironically, my biggest complaint is they focused too much on the Gladiators themselves, and not the violent politics of the Roman Empire. I would have rather seen Geta's and Caracalla's rise to power, how they became so despised, and how they keep their power. We could have had a true political thriller with some sprinkles of arena games. And now, with this ending, I just dunno how they're gonna call the third movie "Gladiator III." Lucius' is now an Emperor, not a gladiator.

If you see something good it was usually in spite of the machine, not because of it. Their #1 goal is usually the slow incremental changing of society, the way we think, our morality etc.

Ridley is pissed up and vindictive. See him in interviews back at Prometheus. Its sad to see. Personally i thought his brother was the better director.

There's not much to choose from tbh. Current generation of actors just aren't on the same level as Crowe was.
Paul Mascal, Glen Powell, Aaron Taylor Johnson. They're all "pretty" boys, but they don't have any real gravitas.

I'll say this again. Although this will be the first most of you have heard it but I have embarked on a journey to find independent filmmakers right here on TH-cam that are highly talented and try to push their work and I have found several guys. I think at this point we should all just stop complaining and whining about Hollywood not giving us what we want and support these independent creators who work outside the Hollywood system.

like seriously, nolan as the favorite director is like saying your favorite movie is pulp fiction. its shit that a first year film student or a film bro would say, its so basic, there is no personality to it, there is no taste, no depth. its like the only directors that exist are tarantino, nolan and scorsese.

24 frames is a FLIM STANDARD, this guy is a tool... wants to be a film critic , yet knows nothing of film standards... this guy would not even been born when the original was released. Denzel plays the same character in every film...Daniel Day Lewis is an actor , he becomes a different person in each film , unlike Denzel
