I have been with the Corries for the last 40 years ...and I still am. For me, their music is on the same scale as Beethoven or Mozart (whom I love). There is no greater folklore than ...them!
Lots of versions of this but surely this is how it's meant to be sung, you just have to listen to the lyrics "I put my head to a cask of brandy" or "A troubled heart can find no rest" Sad thoughtful songs should stay as they are and Roy just owns this auld tune. Also how nice is that word "slighted"!
I was always well impressed by The Corries duo, but after they'd invented the Combolins & mastered them it raised them to such a level there was nobody ANYwhere near them! So sadly missed - VERY DEEP SIGH !
Wow never heard this version by the corries before. Amazing. The tone is a lot sadder and haunting. Luke Kelly's a lot more up beat. 2 class versions so different
Oh, Peggy Gordon, you are my darling Come, sit ye doon upon my knee And tell to me the very reason Why I am slighted so by thee ♡♡♡ ♡ ♡♡♡ I am in love, I cannot deny it My heart lies troubled in my breast It's not for me to let the world know it A troubled heart can find no rest I♡♡♡ ♡ ♡♡♡ I put my head tae a cask of brandy It was my fancy so to do For when I am drinking, I am seldom thinking And wishing Peggy Gordon was here ♡♡♡ ♡ ♡♡♡ I wish I was away in England Far across the briney sea Sailing over the deepest ocean Where love and care ne’er bother me ♡♡♡ ♡ ♡♡♡ I wish I was in a lonely valley Where women-kind cannot be found Where all the small birds they change their voices And every moment a different sound ♡♡♡ ♡ ♡♡♡ Oh, Peggy Gordon, you are my darling Come, sit ye doon upon my knee And tell to me the very reason Why I am slighted so by thee Why I am slighted so by thee
Lee Fitzpatrick Both magical and quite different in power.I love Luke and Roy and I wouldn't say one is better than the other, only my opinion and you are entitled to your's,cheer's.
I´m a Fitzpatrick too but Scottish and think the Corries version is better, more wistful and depressing but maybe that´s the difference between us. You gained your freedom. We are still part of a phony state called the UK run by England. Greetings from a fellow Celt.
Finally found it after years. My favorite version by far

the best ever version
Best version imo. Softly sung song of unrequited love. Timeless.
I believe The Corries were masters of interpretation and this is sublime. Simply wonderful!
My favorite group, and was happy to find a CD of "The corrie Folk Trio and Paddie Bell The promise of the day"😊 direct from Scotland
I was always well impressed by The Corries duo, but after they'd invented the Combolins & mastered them it raised them to such a level there was nobody ANYwhere near them! So sadly missed - VERY DEEP SIGH !
Jim Lyon: Roy Williamson invented the combolins.
Beautiful! A very hard act to follow! ❤️❤️
I remember The Corrie folk trio with Paddy Bell on the tonight prog BBC TV in the 60, magical sound. Must be getting old.
I love this version.
I love this version - it's my favourite.
MINE TOO ALTHOUGH I LOVE LUKE KELLY,S VERSION TOO
Roy did a lovely version of this on The Long Journey South as well. Beautiful song beautifully sung.
Perfect rendition of a great song
This is beautifully played and tracked by them... best version by a long way...
Best version by far!
Duncan Beats I prefer Luke Kelly's version, but this is also good.
Both magical,Luke's powerful, Roy's more gentle. both lovely.

Reminds me of many a night the wife and I shared at a Corrie's concert great music and warmed up we a wee dram o course .
It's WI', not "we". Ye cannae write proper Scots, mon.
In the first line of the 3rd stanza, the word is "hand".

Oh, Peggy Gordon, you are my darling
Come, sit ye doon upon my knee
And tell to me the very reason
Why I am slighted so by thee
♡♡♡ ♡ ♡♡♡
I am in love, I cannot deny it
My heart lies troubled in my breast
It's not for me to let the world know it
A troubled heart can find no rest
I♡♡♡ ♡ ♡♡♡
I put my head tae a cask of brandy
It was my fancy so to do
For when I am drinking, I am seldom thinking
And wishing Peggy Gordon was here
♡♡♡ ♡ ♡♡♡
I wish I was away in England
Far across the briney sea
Sailing over the deepest ocean
Where love and care ne’er bother me
♡♡♡ ♡ ♡♡♡
I wish I was in a lonely valley
Where women-kind cannot be found
Where all the small birds they change their voices
And every moment a different sound
♡♡♡ ♡ ♡♡♡
Oh, Peggy Gordon, you are my darling
Come, sit ye doon upon my knee
And tell to me the very reason
Why I am slighted so by thee
Why I am slighted so by thee
Just brilliant, thank you.
A lovely song
juliajanssen8432. In the first line of. the 3rd stanza, I think that word is I put my HAND on a cask of brandy.
Divine.
Very pretty.
Notwithstanding the beauty of this version, I prefer Roy's solo version to it, by quite a bit.
Scotseasy: What is his solo version?
