Greatest answer to an interview question in all of history.
...actually yes! I caught myself crying and laughing at the same time. So beautiful.
I thought david helfgott was just a fictional character in the movie shine untill i saw this.. brings tears to my eyes, holy. fucking. shit. David you have my uttermost respect.
jatoch jeweet utmost*
I've seen him a few times here in aus..very much a real and unique individual.
@@frankryan2505 indeed
he doesn't make a show, even in concert, he is like an happy child playing wih the notes as if the piano was his buddy
wow..came here right after watching shine
kim the virtuoso same here!
Amazing to see the real David
me2!
ME TOO, HE IS A GREAT PIANIST BUT THIS RECORDING SOUNDS DISTORTED AT MY END.
Yo carnal
This guy pull Rac 3 out of thin air, just like that ! Amazing !
It IS amazing, but what the audience never sees is the THOUSANDS AND thousands of hours put into practicing that David does, no matter that he's memorized the piece. Continual practice is how every pianist operates.
beutifulll person, pure angel, he express with his face and his hands peace and hapiness
David IS a beautiful man...what a joy it would be to be around him. His love and kindness endears you to him. Geoffrey Rush honored David through his portrayal which was brilliant. Anyone who has experienced adversity in their life and can rise above it is FAR stronger inside than you think. I wish David hadn't gone through his hardships...in a small way I can understand, but all I see from him is a beautiful child of God who managed to keep going despite those 'bumps' in the road...Bravo very much sweet David!
It looks like the piano keys are not even enough to express what he’s got inside. Outstanding! ❤️
I think he's so charming when he talks while playing!! Ughh i wish i could hear him play my favorite claire de lune in person!!
It's like the music is a living thing there between the man and the keyboard, and it's playing them both. Incredible!
Yeah, I know what is a fascination of Rachmaninoffˇs music and especially this masterpiece in particular. I know something about it and this man is an absolutely genius, who probably spent half of his lifetime playing piano.
He played the ending about 6 times in a row! Amazing!
Yes, Rachmaninoff (and Scriabin) are from another planet 🛸
I wish the mic sound was not clipping..
I never thought a man could make me feel so many good things inside using only his left hand
Beautiful soul
I understand the movie Shine wasn’t accurate and that they embellished David’s story for dramatic purposes. However, I saw the movie back when I was 12 years old and it made me fall in love with classical music. Been trying to share my passion with everyone ever since. I listen to Rach 3 when I lift weights. It provides me with intensity and measured aggressiveness. I hope this art form lives on forever.
We could all learn much from this brilliant man.
I'm glad to see you David!
This is what genius looks like. WOW!
notes and music live in him, perfect and authentic interpretation of him!
It makes me so cry
This should be everybody's favorite piece of music, actually!! :)
@H-BA Togidubnus It is the best piano concerto I've ever heard.
Ah, the Rach 3, which the movie explains is one of the most challenging pieces to perform.
please watch shine.... he is the most innocent man on earth
Thank you David
One of the best pianist player in history fo classical music.
*all music
what a touch
Grande David.....Immenso.
I never liked his interpretation in the available recording, but this is true authentic passion!!!! love it!
anyway i really love his piano sound
Love you David!!!!
that's the part that made him break down mentally in the movie
David, you're amazing.
Tan conmovedor... Tanta alma puesta sobre su piano.... Tanta intensidad de su corazón..... Maravilloso. Gracias por existir. Gracias por el regalo de tus manos. De tu genialidad.
magic
Ha is so sweet and brillant..
Shine Movie Sent me here!
I am fortunate in that I can actually play that part (the coda) of Rach 3. I fully understand why David finds this so beautiful. I do too. Actually, that part of the concerto is not as difficult as some other sections. The octaves in the last few measures are not difficult to play.
However, there are many sections of Rach 3, that I simply cannot play (clearly). But that is the reason why I became a surgeon rather than a concert pianist. I don't have the "chops" for it.
That does not mean I don't adore the music, which I do. While I don't find everything David does to my real acceptance, he still plays much better than I do. And I always wish him well.

"Thank you, that I am allowed to work with jazz greats; Thank you, that I
live from art; Thank you, that I am allowed bring joy to many people;"
Wonderful to see, but such a pity the sound quality is so bad.
why it makes me cry
Divine Sir
Close your eyes when listenning to this piece... unique
truly astonishing David is such a talentented musician bravo
i am watching shine right now
Absolutely marvelous
Hes a metal God.
Best chords written in the world by Rachmaninoff

Dang! That's impressive. Very good.
🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
Not Muslim, Jew
@ 01:45, David shows us the power of God/the universe to create magnificence, and displays it in mere mortals.
God and Universe are two separate things one being a concept and the other being a fact.
HOLY MY LORDY! Thank You! (bow)
(Reminds me slightly of my Music Theory Professor at Belmont University.) I didn't get but about a third of it! :p
My Error previous comment . . . of course, what he’s playing is from Rachmaninoff’s 3rd Piano, around which the movie revolved !
Yeah! Has that Rocky joyous onward and upward progressive chords stretch. Very lyrical.
Took me longer than a year
He’s clipping in such a good way RN
captivated
simplemente genial! hasta la eternidad!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Terrible recording, obviously, but WOW, that piano has an INCREDIBLE sound. I'm not familiar with Petrof, you basically never see them in the United States, but, the voicing on that instrument is just gorgeous. It's not too bright like the Yamahas, and it is somehow fuller than most Steinways.
Very Shining!
Heartwarming though David's story is on some levels, it has to be said this is a prime example of how a person's brain gets trapped in a loop at this high end of virtuoso practise. The majority can come out of it and get back into the world, as it were, but for a few it becomes real chronic illness. It's extremely autistic, and quite a lot of classical musicians need to ask if it the gains of the activity was worth the price. You can see the mental scars of the perfectionist discipline, as even now he becomes obsessed with not nailing the final chords right. The interviewer almost physically had to call time on it.
Helfgott is great, his story tragic, this interview probably good, probably, but ... I'm sorry to say that (for me, at least) it was quite ruined by clipped and distorted audio. Which is a shame in a video about a musician of Helfgott's talent playing music.
Most awesome human on the planet?
This is why you monitor your audio........
Great Rach 3!
Wish I could hear his voice better, but incredible performance.
Wow
Bravo ☺️😄
terrible Audio unfortunately.
One word:
God
How can a man play the ending of Rach #3 while talking at the same time? 😂
His feet press the pedals too aggressively
Is It his own Partiture or is It a Rachmaninov Piece?
✌❤🎶
jajajaja el medio loop que se pega!
Really bangs those keys doesn't he
The Mic isn't doing him any favours.
it's a pretty loud section ...
It's the mic
The volume he plays at is correct for the way the piece is written. It's just more overwhelming because of how close the cameraman is to David and the piano.
this is the best comment i've read in all of 2017
Here from comment on silverchair video
Jesus dave stop explaining, just play
