To the 20 people who gave this a thumbs down you need to take good long hard look at yourselves. This is great. I am a self taught piano piano player and not a very good one. The only way you improve is by watching people who are better than you. I keep improving by watching videos like this!!!
Excellent presentation, Goat! I know what you mean about changing patches. My Kronos 61 is my only board and I love it, but I'm thinking of adding a cheap extra controller to avoid having to hit buttons at the right time! Absolutely agree about EVH. I figured out "Right Now" on my own a few months ago and it too, is UNRELENTING, but Ed really created beautiful compositional structure on many keyboard AND guitar songs...Just subscribed!
Thank you! Soon I will finish learning it. If I remember, when I post my cover, after creating my official music channel, I send it you here. Your instructional cover is complete and reliable, the original way to play -- despite sometimes your head accidentally covers the keys.
That is beyond fantastic. I had picked out the intro on my own but could never figure out what to play during the verses. I will try to learn from you. Thanks for sharing your talent.
Thanks! Glad to hear you found it useful. Actually, I listened to the isolated keyboard part from a TH-cam Guitar Hero upload. That's how I was able to figure out the verses. It's nice to be able to play the actual part, since it's difficult to pick out on the original track. :-) Have fun!
Really good job man!!! having the drums really helped. Thanks from a kid who grew up watching EVH play guitar and start playing guitar to a now old man who is trying to play EVH keyboards!
Unfortunately, I don't. Most of my sounds are just altered presets. I find a sound that approximates what I need and tweak it, by changing the attack or decay, or making it brighter by altering the filter. It's really just trial and error, and consulting the manual, at times...LOL
Look for anything named "saw" or "sawtooth".. possibly layer it over with synth strings (don't know the patch name on Yamaha, I have a Roland Juno but hope it works for you)

Hi thanks for this video. I know it's from 2015 but I just got a Yamaha MX49 keyboard. Would you have any suggestions how to match the sounds for this song? I'm assuming its layered where there is a piano and a synth as well. Thanks!!
Hey Rob...it looks like the Yamaha MX49 has 1000 built-in sounds, so I would imagine that there might be a basic "sawtooth" synth sound in there. It's really nothing too fancy...just two sawtooth waves which have been slightly detuned (not sure if the MX49 has much programmability for the built-in sounds). On top of the basic sawtooth sound, you would simply layer a piano sound and adjust the levels between the synth and the piano. I'd say 60% synth and 40% piano would be the right proportion. If you can create two patches (programs?), you could have one with just the synth sound for the intro. Then, before the drums come in, you can switch to the layered synth/piano patch, for the rest of the song.
Yeah that's the best one I've heard so far. Good job. I think it needs just a few little tweaks unless I'm hearing it wrong, but this is a great start. Thanks!
Great! There's just one point that I can't understand: why do you play the JV-90 in the intro? why don't you directly play the Fantom as you do in the rest of the song? Thanks in advance
Hey Massimo! Thanks for your comments. While I appear to be "playing" the JV-90 in the intro, I am really just using it as a controller...sending out MIDI note information on a single channel to the Fantom (which is actually producing the sound). On the Fantom, I have assigned that single channel to produce the "synth" sound. When I switch to the Fantom, I have programmed the synth sound to be layered with a piano sound. Thus, both the synth and piano sounds are coming out of the Fantom after the intro. :-)
Thank you very much! Unfortunately, I don't have sheet music for this (I figured it out by ear). If you slow it down using TH-cam's speed adjustment feature, you should be able to see every note that I play. I know it's not ideal, but it should be useful. :-)
Unfortunately, I don't have a tutorial. As an alternative, the video can be slowed down using TH-cam's playback speed controls (under the little gear icon). This allows it to be watched at 75%, 50%, or 25% speed, allowing each key to be viewed with the fingering that was used.
I’m not a keyboard player I’m a drummer. I drive the guys nuts hearing them play a wrong chord when we learn new songs. They swear they’re right and I’m wrong. WRONG. I say this with hopes of helping. In my self taught world I would say that each verse has two turns. The chord at the end of each turn is wrong. I swear to you it is. I’m trying to be helpful. The chords just keep repeating themselves there’s no change. Looks to be the thumb note on right hand. I could be wrong thoughts?
WOW...I just listened to it, and I believe YOU ARE RIGHT!!! The notes in the right hand, at the end of every verse, should be D,E, and A (an "A5 add 9" chord), instead of C,E, and A (an "A minor" chord in first inversion). Good ears! Now, I have to relearn it, after playing it the wrong way for all these years! LOL!!!!! Thanks!!!!!
What is your patch on the JV-90 - did you custom make it or is it one of the predmade ones on the keyboard, I've got the same keys and my band guys are hassling me about not getting this "quite right"....
You can tell your bandmates that the sound is not coming from the JV-90. :-) The sound is actually coming from the Fantom X7. In this instance, the JV-90 is sending out MIDI note information on a single channel and the X7 is configured to play a sawtooth patch when it receives note information on that channel. Then, I switch to the X7 keyboard, which has been configured to layer the same sawtooth patch with a piano patch (the first several bars of the song is just synth and acoustic guitar). If you can swing it, you can pick up a used Fantom X7 on eBay for $1,100 or so. Well worth the money, in my opinion. It's a MUCH more versatile instrument than the JV-90, as it includes many more sounds, greater polyphony, complex effects, sampling, and a sequencer.
Thank you, Adriana! Unfortunately, I do not have sheet music for this...I learned it by ear. You should be able to slow it down using the "gear" icon in the lower right-hand part of the video. :-)
Thanks! :-) It took me several days to learn...constant rewinding to figure out all the notes and sections (12 hours, total, maybe?). I'm not sure it's 100% accurate, but I think it's pretty close.
@@goatghost thanks a lot. I'm a keyboardist, too. From Brazil. And I intent to rec a multicam video with my band. A tribute to eddie. If works I'll find you somehow to show the results. Thanks mate!
Thanks, Jacobo! Unfortunately, it would take many hours to make a tutorial on this, BUT, the web-version of TH-cam has an AWESOME feature which allows you to slow down any video (without a change in pitch). If you click the "gear" icon in the lower-right part of the video, a menu will appear. Select "Speed" and change it to something slower. I recommend changing it to 0.25. You should be able to see each finger move in slow-motion. Keep an eye on where my hands are and you should be able to get a good idea of all the notes (especially, if you play along with the slow-motion video). Good luck!
The intro (using the upper keyboard) has only a "synth" sound, while the rest of the song (using the lower keyboard) combines both "synth" and "piano" sounds. This is how it sounds on the original recording (though, not sure if Eddie Van Halen played the parts sequentially, in the same take, or if he played them on different takes). Anyway, I suppose, I could have simply used the lower keyboard and changed patches between the intro (synth) and main (synth+piano) sections. But, I'm always reluctant to change patches during a song, since it adds an additional action which could possibly go wrong. :-)
Some of the most iconic synth lines of the 80's were created by...a guitarist......
Absolutely! Eddie Van Halen was gifted not only as a guitarist, but also as a composer. :-)
