Welcome back to our Greek Street Food series! This is our last episode and in today’s video we are eating some of the BEST food we had in Greece. We are starting the day eating a spread of “mezedes” (Greek small plates). This includes smoked mackerel, dolma (stuffed grape leaves), and eggplant & zucchini in spicy Cappadocian sauce. To top it off, we tried their baklava and a candied carrot dessert.
Next, we are taking you across Athens to sample the food of Crete. Crete is Greece’s largest island and has its own cuisine. At I Kriti, we order Cretan style snails, apaki (smoked & salted pork), yemista (stuffed peppers) and dakos (Cretan salad with rusk). We also ordered their house wine which was awesome.
In between meals, we visited the National Archaeological Museum of Athens. It houses some of the most important Greek artifacts in the world. It was a beautiful place to explore and we recommend checking it out.
For dinner, we are back in downtown Athens for a traditional Greek meal. We tried kontosouvli (meat on a spit), a classic Greek salad and tsatziki. We were very full but so happy!

The herb on top of Dakos salad is called rock samphire or sea fennel in English. Its scientific name is crithmum maritimum while in Greek is called kritamos. People collect it from coastal areas and pickle it.

Pro tip: just order a salad and feta separately. The "Greek salad" option is made for tourists. When you order them separately, it's the same thing but a bit cheaper.

On the "Dakos" it's capers. In Greece we use the leaves, the stem with the blossom ( what you have on your dish) and the caper fruit. The last one is the most common form of caper. Just watched the rest of the video and it's caper leaves.

@@LukeMartin Turks were influenced by US (Greeks) culturally and genetically. Asia Minor (entire Turkey) was always Greek and only recently completely conquered by Turks, which are not even fully Turkish. What you have in Turkey today is Greek/Turk admixtures.
Same thing goes for rest of Middle East, WE influence them not the other way around.
All the food names are Greek, theres nothing "turkish" anymore because whatever Central Asian got mixed with the overwhelming Greek population is gone now.
Do you see Asian features when you look at Turks? Nope. Hybridization destroys uniqueness and cultures.

In Portugal we also eat boiling snails, but we use oregano, orange and limon peel, water, salt, onion, etc. for cooking. I like snails, but not to big. Great hug from Portugal. Wait for your visit.

In Greece they sell that dried bread in cubes in plastic bags in the supermarkets. It's seasoned with herbs and the reason it's dried is to soak up all the goodies you blend the cubes with (mostly salads).
I brought home two bags from the trip and they were gone in no time...
