- Hi, what's up K-Pop fans! It's your boy, Don here! Today we're going to be reacting to KAI's Mmmh Dance Practice Video. After my initial impressions with the MV, we get to see more of what Kai can do in his capacities as a soloist. BUT, I wanted to take a deeper dive into this dance practice just to see the blocking and arrangement of the dancing in its rawest form. Hope ya'll enjoy!

For 15 years, Tad (real name) started his dancing from high school, and currently works at On One Studios, as a dance mentor and digital marketer. Later in 2015, he was later recruited into a professional dance company called, The Company (@companyfam), where he continued to gain more knowledge about dance in the intricacies and qualities of movement. Tad has also partaken in choreography submission projects to work for K-Pop artists such as iKON, WINNER, SF9, and Stray Kidz under the direction of Pat Cruz, Larkin Poynton, and Alo Galedo.
Through the introduction of Wonder Girls, Big Bang, and SNSD, he started his K-Pop journey by learning the Hallyu history, understanding the idol creation process, and studying its globally trending presence for the past decade. With the wisdom he's accumulated, Tad aspires to continue learning, to share his worlds from Dance & K-Pop, and to help & lead others to be at their best.

It took him 2 months to audition those dancers. The choreographer is Mihawkback (famous choreographer in Korea). I love the choreography. Kai makes it look sophisticated and classy. Also his height and body line makes the choreo even more beautiful.
you are the first person that mentioned the differences between Taemin and Kai which is gratifying to hear. No one wants to hear that they are copying from another artist. They are best friends and used to practice together on their own time while they were trainees. Its understandable that they would have acquired ‘mannerisms’ from each other. He also asked advice from Baekhyun and Taemin, both his seniors in the agency and his bandmates in SuperM while preparing for his mini-album. But each of them are unique. They have different personalities, temperaments, preferences and dance backgrounds which is reflected in their style of dancing.
I personally think that Taemin's style is more Micheal Jackson esk where as Kai is more grounded in sexuality like B Rain.

This was interesting. I don't know if you've watched the Film : Kai video on exo's youtube channel? If not I'd be interested in your feedback. Re. posture I think a lot of it is because his spine is a disaster zone tbh (multiple herniated discs), but it's also a power stance from having to be the center of EXO. He's been a significant part in them being known as an incredible live performance group and as center and main dancer he's carried a lot of that burden and the grounded stance is almost as if he's ready for a fight.
It would be cool to see your thoughts on some of his other stuff. He has a dance practice for his song Spoiler (more hip hop) on the shimworld youtube channel, and a performance rehearsal of I See You/I C U, which is more contemporary on the same channel (he also performed it at MAMA 2017 if you'd rather see a performance). I think both are interesting for comparison.
I'm not sure if you're also aware of SuperM, but if not they're a SM Entertainment supergroup with Kai and Baekhyun (from EXO), Taemin, and Taeyong, Mark, Ten and Lucas from NCT. Kai is their main dancer. As part of their promo build up to their debut last year they produced a dance performance video that has Ten, Taemin and Kai do a dance segment in their chosen styles. You'll already have guessed this if you watched the Film I mentioned at the top, but Kai is always heavily involved in performance directing and choreographing his stuff and you can clearly see the difference in what he produces in the SuperM video. He's been dancing for 20 years now and has been working with Mihawk (the choreographer for Mmmh, EXO's Love Shot etc) for about 13 of those.
This is long I'm sorry! I have a lot of thoughts about Kai and dance haha :(
This dance may look easy to some because Kai makes it look so effortless but after watching all of those dance covers of Mmmh i realized is even harder than i thought, only a handful can perform the moves smoothly, majority look really akwards doing it. Kai and his team are so talented
Great reaction. Loved all your analysis. It looks like this will make a great concert stage. I love how the backup dancers were integrated into the choreography and the performance as a whole. Like the performance wouldn’t be the same without them, they weren’t just there to fill up space on the stage. I think that must be very rewarding and gratifying for the dancers because it means they’re indispensable to the performance. And I think it makes the whole performance more dynamic and interesting for the audience. You could watch that performance multiple times and see new things each time.
Also I heard that Kai held auditions for the backup dancers. I think him and his team had such a solid concept and knew what they wanted to do and so they were able to prepare well and get the best dancers for this project. Not sure if you’ve watched Film: Kai yet, but in that video teaser the backup dancers are also really awesome. The whole thing is incredible so I definitely recommend watching it if you haven’t.
Someone commented on another reaction that one of things that’s great about Kai is that he’s the type of performer that gives everyone on the project a chance to shine from stylist, makeup artist, to producers, choreographers, and editors. And I totally agree. I’m not a dancer or work in the arts but I work in a collaborative field we’re you can’t do work by yourself, so I know it’s so exciting and gratifying to work with someone who gives the opportunity for everyone on the project to shine. Not every performer can because it means they’d have to be very well rounded in many things.
And last thank you for this reaction. I really like how you talked about the dancing, the technical side of it and your perspective as a dancer. Please react to more Kai, and the group he’s a member of, Exo. I also recommend reacting to his group mate Lay ( Zhang Yixing) who is also really great at dancing, especially in his solo song called Honey which has an MV and a dance practice. There’s so much talent and incredible work in Kpop and cpop, it’s really awesome 💛
Thanks for the comment! And I definitely agree, props to Kai’s team. It takes a village to raise a child, and there’s a lot that goes into not only Kai’s MV, but also within their lore and story with EXO. Film: Kai was great!
For me Kai is the best example of a fluid-power dancer. He does it so easily! Btw I thought the cut in the end was because of the teleportation thing? Cause in the the mv they also cut at the exact same parts. I doubt they’d post a mistake anyways.

Fun fact : there's now a mmmh challenge which I think has something to do with the thing you pointed out : internalized body roll. The point is to put a water bottle on top of your head and do as subtle as a body roll you can not to let it fall down.

Seeing kai dance is really fascinating to me he does have dance training in ballet and jazz and he also learned hip hop after joining sm and its interesting to see him incorporate all those styles and make the choreography more him

Great breakdown and I like your description of Kai and Taemin dance styles. To me Taemin is more Michael Jacksonest if you know what I mean, where as Kai reminds me more of B Rain in his sexy animalistic approach with Ballet overtones in his more flowing movements. Both extremely great dancers with their own individual styles. They don't need to be the same to be the best in their own ways.
