Yeah, I am wondering how they will handle that aspect of it... I am really excited about horses being added. But, I also don't want to be looking for food for it constantly.
@@jitwire i would imagine any kind of farm poi would have some grain bags spawn or a somewhat endless supply of grain in a silo, I suppose they could also make the horse only available for certain time or distance periods before you need to dismount and let them graze for a period of time , maybe the time period could be adjusted by the area it is in. like maybe in a place like pleasant valley it only needs a few hours to graze , but somewhere like timberwolf mountain it would take longer or not be possible at all.
Yeah, I was thinking about those too. But thought a Canadian Wild Horse probably made more sense. And the Canadian horse is my favorite. I think it just fits perfectly.
Solid list. I'm excited for horses. I'm not sold on the coming mulitplayer but having a horse friend accompany me into the long dark adds a deeper layer of emotional attachment to the game.
Thanks. I am as well- if you couldn't tell? lol I'm not sure about the multi-player either. But, I am waiting to see how they handle it before really deciding how I feel about it.
I know from your initial reaction video how much passion you have for this subject & it really shines in this presentation :) You argument for the Canadian horse is really compelling, though glad you included other options too and discussed the pros/ cons for each. Reading quickly about their history is pretty fascinating (Wiki), with only 2 stallions and 20 mares (12 surviving the journey) sent initially in 1665 by Louis XIV from France, from his Royal stables in Normandie & Bretagne. Amazing just how breeds developed through such endeavours down to us today. Few thoughts on horses in the game: 1. Shoeing/ Hooves - You touched on hooves for the Canadian, would they need to be shoed, or would the wintery snow perhaps make not wearing metal shoes more desirable (snowballing, grip etc.)? Plus the obvious availability of farriers in the quiet apocalypse. 2. Temperament - Something I learnt from Red Dead Redemption 2 (yes it taught me most of what I know about American horse breeds of the time :) that temperament will be an important factor. Given that we know there are packs of wolves especially but also potentially human NPCs with guns to face, I can imagine that (within natural tolerances even for wolves) a mount that can remain controllable and steady would be important too. 3. Traversal - One of the biggest challenges for the devs will be quite how they balance the big difference in traversing the world mounted or unmounted. One of the core aspects of TLD is that it is about how one moves and navigates across the regions, especially pace and distance. And suitability to pull a large travois as shown in the trailer. Having a horse will in many ways negate many of those concerns, considering speed, endurance, carry weight advantages a horse offers. Interested to see how they balance this core aspect of the current game. Plus on a specific point raised in your discussion with Kirk Stevens (really interesting too), the question of choices when faced with fording the streams and rivers was a good one; choice and consequence. A mount would definitely be advantageous here for sure, opening other options. Thanks for the video.
Yeah, I think this breed just fits beautifully. They don't come in bright flashy colors though since they can be bay, chestnut, or black. So, it can be easy to pass they up because there are more brightly colored and unique breeds out there. Right? The breed's personal story is interesting as well. 1. As long as a horse's hooves and legs are healthy they shouldn't need shoes. When a shoe is added it doesn't allow for as much flex in the hoof. Which is debatable when dealing with rough terrain. I think overall they would probably be unneeded here. 2. Temperament is defiantly a factor and something I would like to love to see considered. I think any horse would get spooky when being confronted with wolves as they are prey animals. But, different levels in reaction would be interesting to see. 3. It really just makes me wonder how big the map is going to be? lol We have a map right now that is bigger than Skyrim and they let us walk the whole thing. But you do bring up good points on how it is going to effect that aspect of the game as it will be something new to manage. I also wonder if weather will play a factor with the horses. I can see a horse not being keen on going out in a blizzard or an Aurora.
@@jitwire Thanks for all your responses, really interesting to get that perspective. One of the benefits of moving to Unreal Engine 5 is that it provides the ability to create a really large contiguous world space. I think the opening vista from the trailer is deliberate in framing the scope they are looking to create. Reminds me a lot in terms of framing of RDR2; the long wide panning shots across valleys and open plains. Current survival game is approx. 75/km2+ now with TFTFT DLC regions included (according to Hinterland web site) so yes, already double that of Skyrim. But contained within 15 separate regions with loading screens, which is fine really for this game. But the opportunity to cross the entire world with no loading screen and simply view such long distances is going to be incredible. And horses provide one answer to quite how the player character could realistically traverse such distances if a timescale suitable for a game (factoring in time/ distance compression). Makes me wonder if there may be other options such as dog sleds (we saw dogs in the information) or even boats given the rivers appear to be flowing and not iced over completely. I'm sure weather will again provide constraints and opportunities as it does now, before other impacts from the Aurora and the new black frost and let you suggest, could well also impact travel options for us. So much to consider, experience and learn about in front of us in this journey ;)
Great vid. I am looking forward to the horses as well. I am a bit more partial to dogs though. Huskies would be great. Or Alaskan Malamute. I like the idea of having a team of dogs pulling u around in a dog sled. Horses might be more practical in a post apocalypse but…….i love dogs. Maybe they could eventually add dog sledding to the game.
I wonder if dogs will be trainable to defend you from wildlife (when they are not in harness pulling a sled). They could also be less susceptible to cold. They could balance both animal companion options so that horse is more convenient as means of transportation, while dogs are harder to use as such, but also useful as defenders.
I am an animal person, lol. So, I'm all about the dogs as well. I have four myself. xD I also like the idea of sled dogs and am curious what breeds they will add and what their uses will be. It would also be cool if they were companions and not solely for transportation. I know TLD community has wanted dogs for forever as well. I'm excited to see how they end up being implemented and what roles they play. I also wonder about the potential for feral dogs as well. As this would add an interesting twist.
I am thinking how they will implement them in game, what kind of stats they are going to have, and/or if there will be more than a few choices to pick from. I have played many games that had horses in the past but none of the games went that deep with them as far as stats, just cosmetics making the horses you could get literally all the same. I hope Hinterland see's this video and employ's some of these ideas, even better if they have different stats as all the horses you have shown here have. That would be great. You go deep on all these tings, pretty amazing what you do, your smart, creative like crazy. I don't know how you find the time really. You got the techie stuff down too. Your pretty amazing!! 🥰👍
I have been wondering about that too. I would also like to see varied stats per breed or per individual. I know that can be complicated from a development side though. But, I also don't like it much when horses are just cosmetic. I think that implementation lacks depth. But, thank you so much for the compliment and for checking out the video.
I grew up riding horses irl and am beyond excited that Blackrost is going to include horses. I am curious if they'll implement is as an already trained horse that we get with a specific quest/trade/achievement or if we'll come across a wild horse(s) or previously domesticated/trained horse(s) that has gone wild left alone in the quiet apocalypse and we'll have to win its trust in order to get it.
I am really curious about that as well. I'm excited to get more information as we get closer to early access and they get more into development of the game. Because, you're right, they could go about how the horse is acquired in a variety of ways.
I don't know much about horses but what I do know if that RDR2 was mentioned by Hinterland as a potential inspiration for horse mechanics. Although I have a feeling it won't be quite like that game. I feel like horses are going to be slow moving and not galloping through the snow, but we'll see.
@jitwire I'm not a horse person. Unlike dogs and cats I can not read their body and face language. I never know what they care thinking or feeling. Also anything that can accidentally step on my foot and break it is a no go for me. 🤣
On the one hand you probably wouldn't find wild horses very often up there. On the other hand one person had brought a horse out there before the collapse you could have that one horse survive while off all the hay bales sitting around cat tail stalks and the other plant matter that you can't eat that it can digest.
There are a few populations of wild horses in Canada in different areas. But, they don't have huge populations. So, running into one even after the whole mess of everything collapsing is probably pretty unlikely. It is interesting to think about people's horses getting free though.
The best breed to use, by far, would be: oxen. Hear me out, horses can pretty much only eat grass and lots of it. Oxen, by contrast, are more versatile in what they eat, and can pull a far greater weight for longer, as well as being hardier. Of course the best form of transport by far would be dog sled, but if you're looking for a big beast of burden then an ox is a lot easier to feed, and will do more work for you, than a horse.
Thank you, this one was a lot of research. lol Especially trying to find out which breeds were present in Canada during the time of the first flare. xD
I'm sorry that I'm negative atm but I wish thet did not show horses. Because they now have a lot of expectation that the horse will work in a specific way that is as free as the long dark usually is. Problem is that a horse eats a LOT of food, where do you get that? It can't eat anything.. I am skeptic but hopefull.
I don't think you're being negative. I'm also trying not to speculate on mechanics. Which is why I stuck to just thinking about breeds- and just for fun. I'm not really sure how they are going to deal with the food part either.
Yeah, it was interesting, learning about Canadian horses! Thank you! Oh sorry it was a great video btw! Should've said that aswell, my skeptesism is not towards you in any way, it was just a statement that I am very skeptic against games that promise things that seems to good to be true :P
At…12 to 15 kilograms (26 to 33 pounds) per day… the game quickly becomes, “find food for horse.”
Mustangs were the first to come mind but I love the Canadian Horse now that you mention it.
Yeah, I was thinking about those too. But thought a Canadian Wild Horse probably made more sense. And the Canadian horse is my favorite. I think it just fits perfectly.
@@jitwire Agreed. I feel your top pick was correct but the Mustang should have made the top 5 at least.
I love that they're making a sequel ❤❤❤ thanks for this vid! I didn't know they'd add horses ❤
You're welcome. Me too, I'm looking forward to seeing how they are implemented!

Ngl such a niche topic is very interesting great vid!
Oh and congrats on 1000 subs I’m happy I’ve kept with this channel in its young ages.
Thank you for watching and for being here since the early days. It is greatly appreciated.

Shetland Pony FTW! 🐎🤠
Hahaha- they are good for pulling things despite being so small. And they would defiantly require a lot less food.

If it’s set in a area like one of the prairie provinces I’d say either Alberta wildies or some kinda medium draft type
Thanks for the watch- and I agree that would make sense if they pick that for location.

@jitwire and that's saying a lot because I really like horses

As much as i'm looking forward to seeing horses in Blackfrost, i know little about North American breeds, so this was very interesting.
You're welcome! Thanks for checking it out.
