    Rhett... OMFG... I'm laughing here because I'm having flashbacks. My grandfather was Tony Manfredi, who worked for Danelctro in the late 60's designing necks and ultimately the famed Toilet Seat Danelectro guitars. All with lipstick pickups... I have fond memories of those masonite bodies and bolt-on necks with their whacky lipstick pickups, with three toilet seat guitars on the wall not far from the oscilloscope and Peterson strobe tuner. Thanks for bringing back those memories! Think I may have to throw a lipstick into one of my guitars... or recreate the toilet seat guitar for myself! Great job, as always!!

    I was just wondering. When you’re hired for a studio session, how do you know what to bring? So they tell you the sound they want, or do you bring 4 guitars and a massive pedal board and a few amps so they can decide? What’s the process like in choosing the gear when going to a studio session?

    • @honkytonkinson9787
      @honkytonkinson9787 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I had the pleasure of visiting a couple of studios in Nashville about 15 years ago and they already had a lot of guitars and amps available. I dont/didn’t have anything near as nice as what Rhett has but I felt a little silly bringing my amp and pedals with me that first time.
      I don’t have a ton of experience but every time I played somewhere in Nashville all I needed was my guitar

      Best thing is to ask. If you can't ask, if it is a known artist listen to previous work. If you have no clue bring a guitar you can play well. At least you can practice till you gear up.

    • @caseyholford
      @caseyholford 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      As someone who’s played, helped out at, and called many sessions over the years, I can say people def hire the player not the guitar. If it’s your session and you have a specific ask that you have seen / heard your player use and love (baritone for sure fits this example), they’ll probably be happy to accommodate. But most producers trust the person they’re calling to bring whatever flavor they think is best. As a player, maybe you like bringing several guitars and a ton of pedals, or maybe you like just showing up with a single option and letting the producer work magic. As a studio assistant I saw guys like Gerry Leonard show up with lots of awesome gear and I saw Nile Rodgers show up with nothing but his strat and plug straight into a mic pre. Also, most studios will have a selection of house guitars, effects and amps to try out on the day and that’s part of the fun and magic of playing a session in a studio, IMO

      Reading your question, I recalled a great story I read probably 20- 30 years ago. Someone laid out the difference between a New York session guitarist and a California session guitarist.
      The New Yorker brings one guitar, one case of pedals and takes the taxi to the studio. The Californian brings a bobtail truck with a dozen guitars, endless pedals, a half dozen amps and a roadie.

    One note about the old lipstick magnets: they’re cylindrical, like a Tele or Strat magnet/polepiece but longer.
    The magnets had to be wound just right ‘cuz the whole assembly is a real tight fit into the lipstick tubes. Danos were “cheap” guitars in many ways but the handwork put into making ‘em was high quality.

    • @Mike-eq4ky
      @Mike-eq4ky 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      HA! My grandfather, Anthony Manfredi was responsible for some of that. He worked for them for some time. I think "value" might be the best way to describe them. He was pretty anal about the necks. But the bodies... that was another story. Go figure.

    I have a 90s reissue Danelectro U2. Having picked it up again in 2020 during lockdown, it has stayed out ever since. I find myself using the middle position (both pickups) most of the time. It sounds surprisingly full and rich given the more scooped, thinner sound of the individual pickups. Works well for slide with or without some overdrive.

It would be very hard for me not to try and save my 90‘s baritone from a fire in my house. I think the wooden uncompensated bridge deserves to be featured, it is playing a big role in the incredibly warm yet so chimey sound of my Dan-E and I would recommend it to very owner of a Dan with metal bridge to try out wooden. Had the worn down wood on my Baritone replaced and adjusted by my fav guitar shop and it tunes astoundishly precise considering it has such a long scale with no separate bridge parts. And the warm baritone twanger fitted with a Capo in 5th resp. 7th fret (I prefer tuning ADGC, sometimes with drop G) is turned into the most effective cutting through everything indie trasher within seconds.

I have a 12 sting Dano 59x12 and that guitar could not be any better. I love the middle switch position mixing the neck P90 and the bridge Lipstick humbucker sound; just incredible sonically. When I have a bassist I can click into the bridge position to roll off some of the lower and let my guitar chime it out on that Lipstick humbucker. It has Rick 12 string qualities for 1/6 the price and it can transfer wit that P90 in the neck. Really great guitars. I pretty much made all my decisions based on what I thought would look cool. Body is mostly a dark walnut color with some tan and red accents, I decided to do a red tortoise shell pick guard and thought “hey what is I did two covered humbuckers with a lipstick in the middle position?” I had to do a little routing to fit the classic dimensions lipstick pickup. It looks just as slick as I imagined, but I was surprised by how much I like the blended sound of positions 2 and 4.

    I miss my old Danelectro. I lost it in a major hurricane and I'm not sure why I've never bought another one. It sounded great, it played great, it weighed next to nothing and it was a joy to play. I just might have to break out the checkbook and buy another Danelectro as the sound and feel while playing them are most definitely unique.

    Im really into Orange and White as a colour combo lately and I love those pickups too. That guitar was a steal for the price you paid. Sounds amazing and one of the most beautiful guitars I've seen

    thanks for answering the Tele neck pick-up question I was having.
    You mention throughout the video what the lipstick pick-ups are good at.
    It made me wonder: what are they bad at?
    it must be something, or no other styles would exist, lol.

    I have a Korean Danelectro a first edition reissue. One thing to mention about Danelectros is the pickups are wired in series most pups are wired in parallel this means in middle position the two pickups combine to create almost a hum bucket effect

    I'm glad you made this episode! I have a custom made guitar built 20 years ago by Gil, an amazing luthier in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and we decided to use lipsticks on her. It's my main guitar since then. Low impedance pick ups are great, and lipsticks are a very good example of it. I'd say that about 70% of my recordings were done using lipsticks!

    I nearly bought a Danelectro last year, but a PRS Tremonti SE came up on a deal and I am a sucker for those bird inlays! It is a lovely guitar.. but watching this, I want a Danelectro again (my name is Dan!) .. I want a 12 string, a baritone, and a standard 6 string. Love that shimmer effect on the last play, with delay and reverb! Lovely guitars..

    Rhett, I love your channel. But this was the best contribution.... the Lipstick pickup... Danelectros... in my opinion there cannot be enough praise for Nat Daniel. The sound of his guitars is outstanding because it is so percussive, natural and cool. I use it live and in the studio. I love it for clear pickings with a little nice reverb and sometimes delay with the neck pickup like E from eels does it so often. There is no better sound than this for an airy arrangement of your songs. It is so good to hear someone appreciating it as much as I do. So, thank you. I'd love to watch a whole episode on Danos. Greetings from Germany, Joe

    Love my two Dano’s and the lipstick sound. One thing to note is most two pickup danos are wired so the pickups run in series in the middle position and not parallel like on a Tele. This gives a fatter sound and is great for slide and the open tuning dano tone 🎸👌

    In my opinion the greatest sounding strat was SRV’s Charley which was made with these pickups. Something about how they sounded once there were guitar changes to it or in comparison to his others alongside his #1 it was one of the most insane sounding instruments.

    I have a 1964 Danelectro 3022 bronze color. I like the lipstick pickups. They give you a sound that's hard to find in other pickups. Around 2.9 ohms. Middle position double that.
    Thanks for the video.

    I just picked up a DC 59. I love the sound of these pickups and how they're placed on the guitar. They seem to get some unique overtones. My only issue with the guitar is that the pots are incredibly stiff and the action changed completely after three days in my basement. I need to get it setup to deal with the reality of my space.

    Thanx Rhett, great vid, once again. Being in Australia, I was able to purchase a Danelectro 59x guitar (2016) & FAB Fuzz pedal. It's opened up a whole new world to me. I got my '1st' guitar (Japanese Stratocaster) in 1980 when I was 16. The (Danelectro) lipstick pickup's sound so good.! I've a wide variety of musical loves Country Western to Black Metal. Absolutely HATE disco, EDM, soft-rock & early 70's pre-punk.

    Lipstick pups (and Dano guitars) have been among my favorites for decades. I've put them in strats, teles, baritones, and even acoustics! I find that because of the "Hi-Fi" performance of the lipsticks, they make really excellent sound-hole pickups, especially for small body acoustic guitars. (The fact that they are longer is really handy here, considering the typically wider string spacing of most acoustic guitars... )
    If you can find older, slightly microphonic examples of vintage dano pups; then a certain sort of 'magic' can happen when the microphonic aspect of the pup 'couples' with a small body (think parlor guitar) and creates a whole different kind of tone. (Why small body? Less prone to feedback, or at least a more controllable feedback that can be really useful.) If you want to hear what I'm talking about, search out this vid: "Mods Demo: A&L Ami Parlor Guitar with Danelectro Lipstick Pickup". I'd post a link but I don't know if that's allowed... :)

    As the direct result of watching this video - I took the leap and just picked up a Danelectro 59M+ 60TH Anniversary Silver Metalflake - and all I can say is wow. It plays better than my custom team build '52 Tele. Makes me wonder about looking at the Yamaha Revstar Standard as a P90 option - maybe consider taking a look at Rhett!
