Awesome post, Thanks. Always wanted to visit those graves when I lived in AZ, but never got to. Worth a mention that as a rookie Bobby Ball earned the pole position in his first AAA "Big Car"start in 1950 at the Phoenix Fairgrounds. The accomplishment has not been easily repeated. As the series changed hands through USAC, CART, ChampCar, IRL and now IndyCar it took 53 years until Sebastian Bourdais was able to accomplish that in 2003. Most recently, Robert Wickens added his name to that short list in 2018.
There is an interesting book written by an ex-neighbor called "My Hero, My Friend - Jimmy Bryan". The author was a boy who lived next door to Bryan in Arizona. The two formed a bond during Bryan's climb up the ranks in AAA racing during the 1950's. As an adult, the author reflected on growing up in AZ during that era with Jimmy Bryan as a neighbor, family friend and boyhood hero. It's worth a read if you can find a copy.
Thank you for making this video, my grandfather Bill baker was a racecar owner and a driver on his team was Jimmy bryan in his earlier years driving midget cars. "This man was the best driver I ever knew" my grandfather always said.
Hi Bill, I am glad to see you had this video on Jimmy Bryan. He was a close friend of my father's and worked for him in his machine shop during off seasons. I remember Jimmy quite well even though I was just a kid at the time. I remember being terribly upset when we got the news that he had been killed in Longhorne. My Dad was a pall bearer at his funeral.
Jimmy Bryan was a jokester, according to Chris Economaki's book "Let 'Em All Go!"..... Anytime he passed through the Pennsylvania Turnpike toll booth, he'd light up a cherry bomb into the toll booth. Until they put a stop to that.
Great Driver! Langhorn was a dangerous track. So many drivers lost their lives there. Mike Nazaruk was another fantastic driver who died there in Pennsylvania.🏁
I was 7 years old when I saw the photo of the Langhorne accident in the Indianapolis Star. I was totally shocked. It really points out how dangerous this was and how much courage it took to climb into the cockpit of those cars. Just a few changes to these cars could have prevented many tragic deaths.
I remember him winning Indy....Belond AP Special.....Sam Hanks drove the same car in 1957 and won Indy...Jimmy was one of my favorite drivers....I remember seeing the news he had been killed on that Sunday....RIP
Jim Bryan was a great race driver, often overlooked for whatever reason. Thanks for highlighting his grave. Requiescat en pace, Jim Bryan and Bobby Ball. th-cam.com/video/Z3yXxHJ3DA4/w-d-xo.html

I was at Langhorn with my dad when I was 14 and saw the horrible accident. Sad.
Nice tribute. Jimmy Bryan with a crew cut and a cigar is one of the iconic images of the open wheel racing scene in the 1950's.
