Are e-cigarettes and vapes really safe long term?

Are vapes and e-cigarettes really that safe long term? As a lung doctor I really worry if this is the case, because these devices have only recently become very popular. Within the last 10 years there has been an explosion in the use of e-cigarettes and vapes and already we are starting to see health problems emerging, such as EVALI (E-cigarette, or Vaping Product, Use Associated Lung Injury). This makes me wonder what will happen in 20-30 years as potentially chemical compounds from these devices accumulate or cause hypersensitivity reactions or other side effects in the lungs of those who use them.
I also worry about the aggressive marketing of these products as "safe" alternatives to smoking regular tobacco products. This reminds me of ads which were purchased by the tobacco industry in the 50s and 60s to fight against the emerging scientific data linking cigarette smoking with lung cancer. We are still fighting that disinformation nowadays.
