#2 can become a problem if you have no long term plan to focus on. Therefore, missing great opporunities because of missing good opportunities that will actually yield great opportunities (for people who doesn't know what to do with their life yet). The greatest things in life come unexpected. If you are too focus on your goal, you end up losing some great opportunities as well. Just a train of thought for discussion. Great video though!
My stream of thoughts exactly : opportunities can't really be differencied into great/good or even bad when you come upon them. You cannot connect the dots looking forward, only looking backward !
You can connect dots looking forward, it's called planning! However, every plan is made to be broken, so after you execute on your next plan step watch for circumstances that may lead to changing the plan for the better.
I think one can allow oneself other projects as long as they don't take too much time of your main ones... And as long as one can give all projects full attention when one is on them. When projects need to overlap something is going wrong. I just think focusing too much can narrow your perspective.
I totally disagree about this point of view . Great opportunities never come by accident .. it need planing and implementation a great plan and unique implementation . If not you can point out one great opportunity that has emerged accidently
"Legacies" are largely pointless. Unless you're Nicola Tesla or something, most people fizzle from memory within a few generations. Just live a life that makes you happy and brings you peace.
And before him we only really remember people like Christopher Columbus, someone who found an entirely different continent for people to live on. Honestly it's just about living and being happy, if a legacy makes you happy then fine, if it doesn't then don't worry about it.
I think it extends a bit differently than this though. You may not be specifically remembered or acknowledged for it, but making a significant enough impact on people could change how they live their lives, stating with your own life, and compound, reaching down generations. Though you may not be remembered as the person who helped a kid be good or live a fulfilling life in 100+ years, you can certainly make some level of impact that can translate and echo across teachings and interactions between people for much time to come, even if it's relatively smaller impacts on fewer people. Regardless of how hard you work you may achieve a Nicola Tesla-level legacy, but that's not necessarily important. Plus, if you never try, you won't know if you'll ever be a Nicola Tesla. In the end, it's ultimately what you want to come from your life, and either way, you won't care once you're dead.
A legacy is not always about being remembered, lasting legacies are never about the person, they are about the gift you bring others, love acceptance, compassion, or what you give to society, e.g. peace, home computers. Legacy is about starting something that continues to grow after your own death: love for others, not about being remembered.
This is one of the best videos I've watched this week! Great points. My favorite was to say no to good projects and focus only on the great ones. Working in single task mode and cutting bad realationships is something I already do :)
It’s great to know I’m doing the right thing after watching this. I just started this mindset this year finding out that this works best for me. As an introvert it works for me and makes me happy so I don’t ever feel like I’m missing out on an opportunity. I tried doing that before just taking every opportunity I can and it turned out I didn’t continue everything not because it wasn’t useful but it didn’t help me reach my long term goals for myself. It’s good that I tried for a very short time though because having had that short experience only made me realize that I wasn’t really missing out on anything. I knew those opportunities weren’t for me. As a person who is easily distracted, multi tasking never worked for me. I thought I had to be a multi tasker but it only drained me. I think it only works for errands but for daily self work for improvement, I need a lot concentration. And now I also always say no to almost everything beyond my routine I planned for myself to improve my skills. And I pick wisely when and whom I only give my precious time to, the only people that really matter or those who I’ll really benefit or learn from. And being someone who couldn’t say no, to opportunities not right for me, to friends who call you up whenever they want to but will say no to you when you invite, It’s life changing. Now I don’t ever feel guilty prioritizing myself and what I want for me anymore. When you do this, there will be people/ friends who will start hating you for changing. But stand your ground.
Steph V my god. Best comment I’ve ever read. Keep going. I’m sure things have changed for you since you left that comment here a year ago. Such an inspiration
Lovely content. Still, I would argue that not everyone is focused on creating a legacy, no matter its size. Some people really enjoy discovering more than mastering. So, for those people, they do appear to jump from point to point with no "great" outcome, but that free knowledge and pleasure is basically what they are in the pursuit of.
I really needed this today. I just spent most of my day utilizing many of my skills to help out a bunch of friends all for free and out of my pocket. Although I was glad to help them out and found satisfaction I still felt drained and unaccomplished. I need to say no more
Sam Anderson Then again tomorrow, you may need them to get somewhere important, say a job interview or a date or a special activity you wanted to do, and they might just get you there.
This channel is exactly what I needed, and it was right before my eyes all the time. It ties together the little pieces that I have found myself over time, but without having connected them in a meaningful way. Now all that's left is the doing part. Eating while watching things probably isn't a good idea either xd
This video was very timely for me, just what I needed to see at this moment. I've seen many of your videos and they're all fantastic. But I wanted to write a quick note to say "thank you" for making this one.
Found this very helpful. This is so similar to the concept being taught in The One Thing by Keller and Papasan. Trimming down energy wasters now. Thanks for creating this content.
Attention Drag! There's a name for it! Whew... I thought I was going crazy. I experience this when I have to switch from "field mode" to "office mode" in my yardwork business. They are different activities based on different mindsets, and changing the channel back and forth (what I have called it) wears you out. You get the physical drain from the field work, the mental drain from the office work, and a third drain from the channel changing "attention drag."
So true! Generally before I start working at home after work, i literally just take a moment to sit in my "homemade" sensory deprivation tank to let my mind and body re-charge.
My point exactly. How many people know how there day is going to unfold.. NONE!! so dont pretend you know what is good and what is bad.. Allot of discernment and experience is required to be able to know the difference..
so many people have missed great opportunities because they didnt seem great in the beginning..i would say seize as many opportunities as u can, cause u may never know which one leads to success...above all we ought to be selective aswel #mythought
A lot of the best opportunities actually look quite dreadful. It's only the slightly insane people who think that might be kind of fun that get to realise those opportunities
The argument around the 2% energy cost (whatever _that_ means) of task switching does not show that multitasking doesn’t work. At best it shows that multitasking is _less efficient_ . That’s good to know, but it’s not always possible to use in practice. Apparently the university is a superb multi-tasker because it often chucks multiple urgent things at us at once!
There's so much good stuff to learn on YT. For me, this video is the great one. So now I'm saying No to more scrolling and off to a session of deep work.
This is excellent advice, but it depends on the career one has. For example, as a social worker, the more opportunities you take, the more networking you do and the greater the chance for a great opportunity to come my way. As a social worker, I am a brand and I must ensure that more know who I am and how good I am so that when great opportunities arise, I am strongly considered.
Its amazing the way you put great content on this Chanel, i watched the first video and i end up subscribing thank you and i appreciate your hard hard work to help others
I hate how right you are about multi-tasking...it's so hard to convince myself that multi-tasking is draining, but it's so true!! When I focus on something 100%, I do get it done faster and feel better afterwards.
Teaching people to be selfish.... to be so individualistic and pursue their own goals.... until at the end they end up with so much material possessions.., and yet so distanced from the wholeness, the oneness of community and the need to devote some (significant) amount of time and energy to helping other people. No wonder at the end of such a person's project he/she must have so much stress and insecurity. Because he/she believes happiness is obtained by building high walls around yourself and doing your stuff. Not to say there are a couple of nuggets to take though. Focus is paramount, and negative energy is to be disdained.
It is useful to have a stronger financial backing and freedom behind you from your business and project, as then you will actually have the ability to just "snap off" from work cycle and fully dedicate your life to living, interacting with others and experiencing freedom around you.
If someone's focus is (in point of fact) a charitable creation, say a business model to engage in financial networking so low income housing (for example) is a viable resource to build brand... THEN where's the "selfish"? Are we all supposed to starve to death in the idiotic attempt to undo all the world's wrongs all at once? OR could it be more feasible to scrutinize a certain particular shortcoming of society, WITH INTENSITY OF FOCUS, and see if there isn't a dynamic means to economically and feasibly fix that one thing... and then move on to another...? Maybe stop talking out your ass just to hear your head (or keyboard) rattle... AND think. ;o)
Great video because it provided a lot of insights on what I can do to improve my life and possibly achieve my dreams. I also love your channel as well so keep up the good work!
Point #2 is very situational. Sure, if you already have a good income stream that makes sense, but if you are not in a good financial situation, you need to take on any sort of decent opportunities. Great opportunities might take a long time to materialize
If you have a full time job and exercise and meditate can you still have energy left to start an online business. How do you balance your activities or how did you balance your activities when you had a full time job
It is one of most benificial effective work . Although i have read almost every single advice in varity of books such as art of learning and seveb habbites for most effective ppl .but, the method that has been used in this vids is astonoshing .. thank you for your significant effort
True! There's also a saying I've heard here on TH-cam that 80% of your productivity/success is a result of your 20% effort. As we grow as adults, time and energy becomes more finite, as we can do so many things unlike when we're very young or very old. I heard this once on stress management, once you managed your stress, stop entertaining opportunities that could add to it. So what are great opportunities? I guess those are opportunities that make you lose sleep thinking about it or something you have always wanted to do your entire existence.
Right and wrong ,for me anyhow.I like to switch tasks because one realx me from the other. For instance,I cannot tidy up effectively for mote than a few hours,I get brain drain after that and do better to switch to tasks that are demand less thinking.Organising stuff, require to make hundred of decisions in a short amount of time.
Which is what this video tells you to do. You're intensely focusing on tidying up for a set amount of time. No one said you had to do it all day and all night.
What's your advice for young state/national athletes who are also an astounding musician plus attending a science school. Should they quit one (sport/music)?
Is listening to audio books while working (I do physical labor) bad for me or good? I battle with this because my job doesn't require much thought (I load trucks) so I don't want to waste my time and like to listen to listen to audio books and learn. However I realize I'm not completely focusing which is not good. Any input is appreciated!!
I agree but what if the most important things to you are already too much and stretch your energy too thin to be able to do them effectively? For example, the most important things to me are: relationships with family and close friends, house keeping, career, health & exercise, and spirituality but I feel like I don't have the energy to do even 2 of those things!!!
They measured his much energy that task took, then they made the people spend energy (while measuring) until they died. That was considered 100% of their energy. I'm joking
What if I don't have a main project in life I've been trying to find one but I'm lost I have no interest in the field that I majored in just graduated and have no idea what to do
Sell something to anyone Applecakes, I sell used vintage gear as a side hustle. You may have no interest in the subject, but someone else does! Plus because you have a degree, you are valuable to employers. Why? Because you have gone through the CHALLENGE of college and have EARNED your degree.
timeofsage It's simple, you either make a decision to do it or not. You decide to take an interest or not. You decide to enjoy it or not. Some people are lucky and they have natural passion, but for the rest you either make a decision or you don't. You decide either you will focus on a task and career or you won't. *Inability to make a decision is the equivalent of not making a decision.* You make your decisions and you reap or suffer the consequences be they good or bad. Bottom line, you decide to do it or not.
I multitask like crazy. BUT I only do one task at a location (eg. My desk). Chores need to be done, even if it’s putting away *some* laundry, so I’ll do part of a chore. When it’s done, I find something nearby that has to be done, and do that. I don’t use mental energy, since most chores are autopilot tasks, I have a variety of things I’m doing, and get quite a bit done. It’s only when I have to concentrate that I focus on one task at a time. Even then, distractions are useful to act as a break from work.
Thanks for sharing. I think you have stated the obvious. The trick is setting your objectives that will still be useful on completion and some time into the future. For example you might decide to become a petroleum engineer and oil reserves run out. Secondly you have to be able to discern useful fron useless interruptions. For example, when considering the financing of deep sea oil platforms to exploit off shore reserves, you might be undermined by electric cars technologyTo properly determine what to say no to, you need a risk assessment system. So tag on a risk assessment video and this video might have some application
So..no more smoke bowls while watching a movie and drinking beer everyday, it's got to be smoke a bowl watch the movie then drink the beer? I just don't know if I can do that the other way is much more fun.
Multitasking on leisure isn't so bad because there's no pressure to get anything done when you're just having a drink and watching a movie. This is only a philosophy for work-lifestyle. That's why the 2nd point is kind of muddy, because it only considers the career/goal-relevant value of all these opportunities you're saying no to without touching on other benefits.
I feel like I already know all this stuff any of these sort of videos and I'm just not putting into action very well. Or I am and it just takes time and incremental progress.
Depends, a lot of this stuff is wishy-washy but still helpful. If you know to not just take people's words for it then there's little to worry about in watching flawed works.
Unfortunately, I dont agree with #2, it depends on a case to case basis if you ask me on that. Not everyone's gonna have the same view point on things. To one person that opportunity can be great, and to the others it won't be. In the end, it's up to us how much of an importance one thing is to us and using our energy and time on it is going to be worth it for us.
Also, the Chicago Bulls won 6 titles. Not Michael Jordan. Kind of disappointing that a self help video subtly encourages people to ignore the effort of a team and only recognize their own effort.
@@kylegalcorn wait what? Blasphemous. Jordan is the GOAT, and there is no such thing as self help videos. Videos are Just videos and self help is, well, you know, SELF HELP, It means you do all' the stuff by yourself lol
I have learned to say no to people asking me to record songs with them. Those that don't involve more writing and or this who rant going to do major promotion and it has really released some stress
there are so many channels like this. Read a book and then put the ideas into the video with a cartoon hand drawing cartoons that reinforce the ideas. This guy didn't "create" his own business... But he didn't waste energy!
Ayn Rand approves of this. Small objection. If everyone was successful, how barren and lifeless would human society appear? It is those who 'fritter away time' that put in the colour and warmth and thus the reason to extend that society. No, I think the gem to be extracted from this is that there are two levels life operates. The achievement level and the 'it is great to be here' level. One is intensive and is reasonably limited to, and identified by, what are that person's genuine talents. The other is life-affirming stuff, family, community, minor interests. The former needs the ability to 'deep work' (a skill in itself, dopamine) and the other is to build friend networks (serotonin). Where we sit on that balance [30/70, 90/10] is only registered on the dark side of the moon.
And I thought this was going to highlight something akin to an old idea I had in the early 90s that was to address what millions of households have around the world - a clothes dryer - which have been designed around heating home air to dry clothes then exhausting it outdoors... then, reheating additional ambient temperature air from inside the home and pumping THAT cost to the outdoors as well, continuously, instead of using the exhausting air to preheat the dryer's intake of the home's air going into the dryer's heater box in an effort to shrink the heating delta required to heat the dryer's air.... Just a heat exchanger..... It was my counter-point accompanied by estimated BTU comparisons to the implied spirit in the saying "Shut the door! Did you grow up in a barn or something, letting all that air conditioned / heated air outside / inside?"
Just2Options? Irrational: FearOrExuberance? Brilliant idea, I thought of doing the same thing with a refrigerator, to wit, in the summer, exhaust the Heat of the compressor and heat exchanger to the outside versus exhaust to the inside of the house where the heat then needs to be collected by the AC system and then exhausted to the outside of the house. But I think the gain in efficiency is too small to make the project worthwhile. And, you'd have to place the refrigerator near the side of the house, and you'd need to have lines or tubes running from the refrigerator to the outside of the house, just not worth it.
Ron H , Or, transfer all waste heat to to heating tap water to be heated the rest of the way by a water heater. Maybe store all of a home's unwanted heat into thermal batteries for flexibility in utilization for home's processes dependent upon time of day.
No.. it's more like, recognize the energy vampires in your life. We all have them. That's the person you give 100% to, who only ever gives you about 20% back.
About the "attention divided too many times" ...I kind of disagree. Have you heard about "multipotentialies" (Ted Talk). They refuse to choose..Their point is interesting
what if we miss out on an opportunity that would propel us to the next level. what if that was just a doorway to another life changing decision? i think its safe to say that we have to choose what we can live with. or live without in this case.

As a social worker, I am a brand and I must ensure that more know who I am and how good I am so that when great opportunities arise, I am strongly considered.
Its amazing the way you put great content on this Chanel, i watched the first video and i end up subscribing thank you and i appreciate your hard hard work to help others
Great Job mate, I just found your channel and as long as the quality of your content remains to this standard or higher you will do awesome.
I was thinking the same thing but you put it really well.
I was thinking the same thing.
AND think. ;o)
One of the best videos of "better life" I ever watched. And ive watched a loooot!!!
Great video because it provided a lot of insights on what I can do to improve my life and possibly achieve my dreams. I also love your channel as well so keep up the good work!
Now that was a GREAT Video....Thank you Sir!
this is Fabulous.
i knew this instinctively without being able
to articulate it.
thankyou.
Vitamin B12.
Seriously. Great video! Thank you.
I will remember these three time wasters. Thank you!
Excellent points, extremely helpful! Thank you for posting this.
Great wisdom do not neglect your work for another’s no matter how great his needs
It seems like nowadays multitasking, signifies that one is very productive. This is a fresh perspective on that.
Amazing idea for channel articulation research and expertise did about 5 eps in car today
It is one of most benificial effective work . Although i have read almost every single advice in varity of books such as art of learning and seveb habbites for most effective ppl .but, the method that has been used in this vids is astonoshing .. thank you for your significant effort
Thank you for these videos, they are really helpful
this was extremely useful, thanks and subscribed!
How can we make this type of videos as in the technology that helps in amination and picturing. Name of one such software?
Thank you
There's a link to the software I use in the description for you Kevin.
"Most of my energy is spent by having QUALTY time with my wife" XD
This man is a legend…
Pareto principle
I would be interested to understand how "2% of your energy" was measured?
They measured his much energy that task took, then they made the people spend energy (while measuring) until they died. That was considered 100% of their energy.
I'm joking
True but when I think that I have a lot of energy and attention strength then it works like placebo and I do have more
I don’t multi task but being able to multitask varies, some people can do it well. But there are many benefits of focusing one task.
Rejecting good but not great opportunities while there is no great opportunity for you that presents itself is wrong.
Wow! Very helpful video. Brilliantly narrated.
Focus on acquiring as many skills as you can. Identify your inclinations and acquire skills that relate to them.
timeofsage
It's simple, you either make a decision to do it or not. You decide to take an interest or not. You decide to enjoy it or not. Some people are lucky and they have natural passion, but for the rest you either make a decision or you don't.
You decide either you will focus on a task and career or you won't.
*Inability to make a decision is the equivalent of not making a decision.*
You make your decisions and you reap or suffer the consequences be they good or bad.
Bottom line, you decide to do it or not.
Read Think and Grow Rich. Nothing is more important.
I need to listen to this multiple times so it can sink in.
I love your channel, thanks for everything!
How will you then know when an opportunity is good and when it is great?
That's nice ! you are different , Appreciate your effort and the topic choice .
Finally. This is the road I'm going down, but now I know I'm being focused, not an asshole.
Loved this!!!!!! Thank you. P.S.- 6/8 years for MJ
Any suggestions how to be an achiever in something and being a caregiver?
I multitask like crazy. BUT I only do one task at a location (eg. My desk). Chores need to be done, even if it’s putting away *some* laundry, so I’ll do part of a chore. When it’s done, I find something nearby that has to be done, and do that. I don’t use mental energy, since most chores are autopilot tasks, I have a variety of things I’m doing, and get quite a bit done. It’s only when I have to concentrate that I focus on one task at a time. Even then, distractions are useful to act as a break from work.
Thank you! Precious verbatim!

There's a fallacy here. Taking out a creative project, play the drums, for example, actually creates energy.
Depends, a lot of this stuff is wishy-washy but still helpful. If you know to not just take people's words for it then there's little to worry about in watching flawed works.
Thanks for this video!
I agree with your criticism of multitasking. Much of the rest seems to me pure selfishness. But more power to you.
The music at the end...so cool.
Watching this while working.
Stopping and concentrating on work...lol
Thank you! This is a jewel!
I really liked this video! Great ideas! Do you have any ideas for women? It seems like a lot self improvement youtube videos are for men.
In the period Jordan won his 6 titles, he played minor league baseball and made space jam.
@@kylegalcorn Yeah lets pretend like they would had won without him
hahahahahaha
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
hahahahahaha
*pff*
My poor face muscles
Say no more
He just took two great opportunities and took one good one
What's kind of Software you used to build this map? Thanks!
I've added a link to the software in the description for you
I really needed to hear this again...
I have learned to say no to people asking me to record songs with them. Those that don't involve more writing and or this who rant going to do major promotion and it has really released some stress
Such a great illustrator
there are so many channels like this.
Ron H ,
Or, transfer all waste heat to to heating tap water to be heated the rest of the way by a water heater. Maybe store all of a home's unwanted heat into thermal batteries for flexibility in utilization for home's processes dependent upon time of day.
@1:29 I watched this video while I just left shower, naked, drying myself and getting clothed. Multitasking worked.
So, if a person can’t be used to your advantage, dump them.
I came away with the same impression.
Yes.
No.. it's more like, recognize the energy vampires in your life. We all have them. That's the person you give 100% to, who only ever gives you about 20% back.
About the "attention divided too many times" ...I kind of disagree. Have you heard about "multipotentialies" (Ted Talk). They refuse to choose..Their point is interesting
If one defines 'multi-tasking' as allowing the washing machine to wash a load of laundry while one cuts the lawn, is it still a bad thing? ;)
You can accept good opportunity, but when a great one comes then put all focus on that.
what if we miss out on an opportunity that would propel us to the next level. what if that was just a doorway to another life changing decision? i think its safe to say that we have to choose what we can live with. or live without in this case.
Great points. Great video. Thanks
Great advice , thank you
