McCarthy(Dennis) also stepped outside the show's trademark musical style for a montage sequence of memories as the series principals reflect on their time on the station "Finality"/"The Way You Look Tonight" interpolate both McCarthy's DS9 theme and the song standard "The Way You Look Tonight" as set up earlier during the story with holosuite crooner Vic Fontaine (James Darren). Producer Rick Berman asked that the saxophone performance and some other element be dialed out; this track presents the original mix for the first time
This ending... after all the fighting, all they've been through togother. They are all going their seperate ways. Many of them had become more than colleagues and friends, many had become family to one another. To see such an emotional scene for the first time was awesome to say the least. then theres o'briens bit, referring back to the minstrel boy from TNG which i thought was a nice touch. the series ended on such a high note I couldnt possible forget it.
Porushin Plays Brings a tear to my eye every time
Odo and Kira's breakup so soon after their long-awaited union felt contrived and just plain...well, wrong from the standpoint of character arc. Surely, the Founders' re-education would not take so long as to require this sacrifice.
Just unforgetable.
I always thought the final shot ... a young man waiting for his father and the character who had grown the most (Kira) waiting by that window for the future to happen ... maybe bringing their loved ones back or not, was a genius ending. Very different from the other shows, but with some real resonance.
I always thought it was that all the rest of them, (Miles, Julian, Worf) were moving on or forward. Kira and Jake were the only ones who still in the same place, waiting for a loved one that may never come back, looking at the place they were most likely to be showing up: the wormhole
I thought is brilliant ending also. Not endings, new beginnings.
RIP Nog. RIP Odo. Actors keep dying and the dream of a sequel seems to be vanishing. This story changed my life. You all left so much behind.
We should start a global Grass Roots campaign to get DS9 the movie it was never given

@@scottbennett6357 2 years late but I agree - Plus.......I don't think Avery Brooks or any of the others would want to do it. And without Nog and Odo, there is no DS9. I think the world has changed too much as well - I would rather not sully something as good as DS9 with a feeble attempt at giving it life again 25 years after its end. I think we need to learn to leave things as they are sometimes. Current producers have done everything they can to destroy what Trek was since 2009 with the Kelvin timeline debacle......they even went far enough to commission the 3 novel CODA series to destroy the 'prime' universe and everything established in the books to bring it all into line with Picard. They're wrecking everything.
Hollywood and more seem to be going through a weird phase of rebooting and remaking everything as of late - its as if they've run out of ideas, look at Discovery ha! They're running over an entire series what TNG did in 1 episode - clue chasing. Its just no good anymore.
its no replacement but the books are really good, alot of amazing post DS9 tales and Epics that span the whole cast of TNG/VOY/DS9

I always cry like a blubbering fool at this ending no matter when I see it or what mood I'm in. I'm finding it hard to listen to this without my my lip quivering.

Loved the finale to DS9 my only complaint was in the montage of memories I wish some of Jadzia had been shown.
Jason Trickle, according to a "Trivia" post in the imdb.com entry for this ep, Terry asked for too much for her image to be used. I thought it was a glaring omission too.
As Worf is leaving he looks up and sees Ezri watching him, if Ezri had morphed into Jadzia standing there waving goodbye . . .
Damn those onions!
And the rehashing of the battle from Sacrifice of Angels.
I heard her agent asked for too much money. A real shame.

God damn, this show was basically the last part of my childhood. Very late teens, still living at home. Miss it like hell.
18 years ago DS9 ended.............where has the time gone? Its both sad and frightening, and when our time on this Earth is up......What You Leave Behind indeed!
Reminds me of what Captain Picard said at the end of ST Generations. "Someone once told him that TIME was a predator that stalks us all our lives but he would like to think of TIME as a companion that goes with us on a journey to remind us to cherish every moment because it would never come again. What we leave behind is not as important as how we lived them."
Surprised there aren't any comments about 4:02. To me, that is the heart of this piece. The reprisal of the main theme, but with a slowness and weight that just heavily evoke the feeling of not wanting to say goodbye.
Best Star Trek series ever! Sisko was an amazing captain. I'd follow him into battle against the Dominion without hesitation.

Of all the star treks I’d say Deep Space Nine was my favorite it was to me like reading a really good book when you read it I wished I could go back and read it again
I don't know how many times I've gone back and rewatched DS9, muiltiple times, but its soo worth it.
Sax and smooth drums added to the actual, featured version of "What you leave behind" part II. However a mesmerizing, emotional composition. Thanks for posting.

Okay this a really funny think to be irked about. The picture of Bashir in this video I'm 99% sure is the scene when you realize he's been replaced by a Change-ling. Of all the shots of him why that one! haha
I have watched the full seasons, once and again, I think around five times, and the first time in this ending i cry with a deep emotion... I thought it would be because it was first time , but no... every time I watch it again, my tears fill my eyes... Deep Space 9, deep feelings and emotions.
This upped the ante from the original cast sign-off in the Undiscovered Country.
Playing STO with this on as my little kestrel shuttle is peacefully cruising around the galaxy . :3
I have to say this to people that care about this sorta thing, but......I’m meeting Garak and Kira in October. I’m going to my first convention, Destination Star Trek in Birmingham and I’m gonna meet Andrew Robinson and Nana Visitor. I’m shitting a brick about it, but so excited. It’s a strange feeling to meet these actors who played characters that meant and will always mean so much to me.

I have always loved this piece. When my puppies were small we would listen to this and other music. Tonight, my oldest boy is next to me. Cancer will take him before the end of summer. The last of things,.... my last and best boy at 14 years. Where do you go and what do you see? That was the beauty of DS9. A crossroads is never dull and boring. Like our life.

shame Dennis McCarthy didn't compose more film scores. very talented composer.
He seemed to drop out of sight after "Enterprise" ended. I think the only big screen soundtrack he did was "Generations."
I had recently finished this series, and all I can say it was quite wonderful. Every episode was wonderful in its own way, I was able to finish the series before it got taken off Netflix. Now the next series to watch in line... Voyager.
It is now 20 years since DS9 ended. It was my favorite of the Star Trek sequels. I miss everything about it especially the jazz music. Wonder if we will ever find out even if it is only a novel if Capt. Sisko ever left the Prophets and returned to DS9 and what was Sisko doing while he was with the prophets?
The idea was floated that Deep Space Nine (and by extension, all of Star Trek) was all part of Benny Russel's imagination, but it was ultimately decided that it would be insulting to throw away the fandom's fifty-plus years of emotional investment in the franchise.
Deep Space Nine is my favorite Star Trek after the original series.
Man, when those little compilations of the episodes played when O'Brien, Worf, and Odo took one last look at the station, I almost couldn't contain my tears. I could feel my heart shatter as I realized that it was all over. There wouldn't be any more fun (but awfully depressing) space adventures with the characters I initially didn't at all care for, but grew to love.
Nevertheless, I couldn't have possibly asked for a better ending to it all. What a masterpiece.

Beautiful and nostalgic. My favorite Star Trek show of the entire franchise. I did not want to end, I wish they would have continued with movies--the doc just came out after 25 years. Loved all characters--especially Sisko, Dax, Odo, Kira, Quark, Rom, Nog...what a great ensemble of actors and writers.

when I saw the ending of the series it was sad and was crying because the characters were going their separate ways and some were leaving DS9 permanently. Such as: Miles and his family saying goodbye to Julian, Worf leaving Ezri Dax, Odo saying goodbye to his girlfriend Nyres - to be with his people again and make changes and start a new order. So changelings and solids could live together in peace. Ben Sisko ,and wife Kassdiy and his son Jake. I hope at some point that entire team including the wonderful actors who helped create the spectacular show of DS9. Maybe Rick Berman, will plan to create a squel. After 7 years in 1999 from the original DS9 series to see what all of the characters are doing and where they ended up so far after 7 years in 1999. What do you other DS9 fans think of a squel would be a good idea? Its just my idea as a DS9 fan. I've been a fan of Star Trek as long as I can remember it all started with the Next Generation watching it on TV when I was little in 1988.

Cassidy was pregnant at the end of the series. That child would now be around 18 or 19 years old. I would love to see what happened to Ben's family.

I really wish that there would be another series about the after effects of the dominion war
It would have been great if the original cast had continued with a series of movies similar to what TOS and TNG had done. Even if instead of the new Discovery series they could have continued the Star Trek saga with an exploration of the Gamma Quadrant after the collapse of the Dominion. Think of how many great stories they could have told, how many worlds would have changed, how many intriguing relationships could have been developed!

@@frederickvillarete1755 I agree, it would have been good to see how the war torn Alpha Quadrant recovered, especially on Cardassa. And yes exploring the Gamma Quadrant after the fall of the Dominion would have been great, perhaps it will happen some day.
I'm hoping we get that too. That would make an epic series.

Having watched the series, first time round on BBC2 and then on DVD. Yes the end is still moving and brings a lump to the throat. The series is currently [2019] running on the "free-view" channel Horror here in the UK and no doubt will have the same effect when the last episode s air again........
Rick Berman has always hated music.
This mix sounds better than what ultimately aired.
Still moves me even now. A tight unit of people who had so many differences but became a true family. I wish the "suits" would still consider a movie sequel following what has happened to the DS9 crew.
It's just too bad they couldn't use any Jadzia Clips for this final episode. Worf's Wedding would have been a good one to add.

I would recommend reading the DS9 post series novels. They provide a really good continuation of the DS9 universe and really feel like the same characters. I stopped with The Worlds of Deep Space Nine because they did a five year story jump (which combined the various Treks) and are only now getting back to where Soul Key ended. Sisko returns after a little less than one year in the novels.

I would swear that's taken from the episode Visitor where Jake grew old and eventually died.
@@Arjan_van_Rees Yes 0:41-2:35 is the abridged version of the 2 main themes from The Visitor, one of the best episodes AND soundtracks of the entire Star Trek franchise!

Not only is it just a beautiful piece of music, but it also perfectly mixes a bunch of the leitmotivs we've grown to love over the series perfectly.
We have music like this in Picard season 3, but only because Terry Matalas demanded it
I am going to paraphrase Aron Eisenberg (RIP, we miss you) "I didn't leave it behind, it will always be with me", I never left Deep Space Nine behind either and it will always be with me.
a pivotal moment
Feeling a bit moody now. just found out that my family blazer of 16 years is too rusted out to fix. So I'm saying goodbye to her. This song seems right for the moment. Lots of good memories/adventures w/that truck. This truck and last week our trailblazer went bye-bye for the same reason. Had both trucks for 12 & 16 years, lots of adventures and family road trips. Gonna miss both. What you leave behind, indeed.

Did anyone else notice that 0:55, McCarthy uses his theme from "The Visitor", as a callback to Ben and Jake's father/son relationship. That's real Star Trek music right there, not the Hans Zimmer rip-off crap Jeff Russo produces for Discovery and Picard. I can't believe they didn't hire Dennis to do at least the pilot of Picard, he's still alive and he just did the score to the DS9 documentary What We Left Behind with his bud Kevin Kiner. Why? Because he's too good? Why?
The only fault was Sisko appearing to Kassidy instead of Jake to say goodbye...for now. And perhaps a quick cameo from Jadzia, perhaps from the balcony as Worf takes his leave.
I always wonder what the would have chosen for the ending music if they hadn't created Vic Fontaine. Just the way you look tonight is the song he sang a few episodes before this.

You two know that Rick Berman had as good as nothing to do with DS9 at the end? The show was Ira Steven Behr's and Ronald D. Moore's baby.
@@christianstein4521 and is the best of the whole franchise. Makes you wonder doesnt it. If berman hadn't got his paws over voyager and enterprise and say someone like coto had the helm for longer. Or behr had taken enterprise.

I definitely agree, it's the best. Although considering what is nowadays released under the label "Star Trek" I have to admit that Berman wasn't that bad at all. At least he cared for continuity.

As someone who doesn't really watch much star trek but knows about it, is this series good? Like, I tried the next generation show and found it to corny. I like most of the various star trek movies tho. I was just wondering if DS9 has a different feel to it
The series is the anti-Star Trek in a way. It takes on more mature themes and is way darker than any ST material before it. And in a good way too. It doesn't mean unnecessary violence or gore, it means a long and deep look at human nature, the nature of paranoia and fear, and the true, brutal reality of war times.
The entire Star Trek utopia Gene Roddenberry so carefully built up is challenged by the most well thought-out scripts and stories ever told in this long existing universe.
And the relationship, the bond between characters changes, gets more tightened or more and more distant or non-existent as the story moves forward. Everything is changing, and one excellently written arc gives birth to the next as a horrible and unavoidable war looms over the horizon.
And the cast is the perfect match between corny and strange aliens used geniusly as comic relief and the more believable reality of intelligent, sentient souls trying to survive in the dark space out there, no matter what's their past, their culture, their race, face or skin colour.
All that really matters in the end is what you leave behind after facing the biggest crisis you can imagine in your life.
And how you will be remembered may just as well lead to the most unexpected and more perfect future in the very end through the bravery and example of your generation's heroes...

Not quite the strength of that All Good Things ending, but a fine ending nonetheless. A great finale hamstrung by the unbelievably stupid Sisko/Dukat finish.
Dukat could’ve been done more justice, but people seem to forget he was legit possessed by a demon, tbh I’m surprised he wasn’t any wackier
