Water is considered hard when it exceeds 3 grains per gallon gpg. A gpg is equivalent to 17.1 ppm. If you want to convert hardness in gpg to parts per million ppm you would multiply the hardness number by 17. So what will you notice at different hardness levels?
0-.5 gpg: Your water has been softened already
1-3.5 gpg: Your water doesn’t require softening because it is coming from a soft water source like surface water from a lake or river. You will get minimal or no scale buildup or staining.
3.5-7 gpg: Water between 3-7 gpg is moderately hard, causing spotty dishes and dry skin. At this level having a water softener is optional but if you have had one in the past and are particular about the cleanliness if you home you will want one again.
7-10.5 gpg: Hard water is packed with minerals at this level, and you likely deal with crusty stained faucets & pipes and possibly reddish rings on your porcelain from excess iron. You will not be able to use an on demand hot water heater or Ultraviolet Disinfection system without first softening the water. You will notice that you are getting scale buildup around faucets and fixtures, toilets will become stained.
10.5-14: Considered very hard, this water exhibits all the signs of hard water all the time. Glass shower doors and dishes will become very spotty. Whenever water sits anywhere in your home you will get a build up of lime scale and it will be difficult to scrub off. Your hot water heater will become less efficient due to the scale buildup and you will shorten the life of your dishwasher and washing machine.
14+: Extremely hard water is anything over 14 gpg. Glasses are extra spotty, skin feels super squeaky, dry and scaly. Soap scum will become an issue and there will be scale buildup everywhere. You will need to use far more soap to get clothes, dishes and people clean. If you’re on well water, you may also be seeing other problem water signs such as iron stains. If you try to wash floors with dark stain you will never be able to remove the streaks. It will cost you considerable amounts of money due to the damage caused by this extremely hard water if you do not get a water softener.

Hello Gary! The water hardness for my area is 186 ppm or 11 gpg, I figure. My water softener came preset at 25 and goes up to 100. With it at 25 I only notice random soften water for instance while washing my hands or using soap. I don't notice "slick" feeling while in the shower? Im curious if I were to set my setting to 11 it seems it would be less softening than at 25? Also, if your ggp # would be most likely be less than 20 than why would my settings go up to 100?
Soem people have water that is a hardness of as low as 4 and might be as high as 100 or more. Your water softeenr needs to be set correctly to make sure that it is efficient but is softening your water. If you are noit usrer that your water softener is working I would take a sample and have it tested before and after the softener. We have 17 grains of hardness. Would a water conditioner be as beneficial as a softener? We already have a water softener but am considering a salt-free conditioner instead but don't know if that would be a bad idea?
Salt-Free Conditioners don't soften water so you will be very dissappointed in their results.
So my water tests 300ppm before water softener. What should the hardness be set at to bring it to 0?

I have a UV in my system. I do wonder, why do the water need to be softener in order to use the UV?
Great question! Hard water will leave deposits on the glass sleeve and those deposits will eventually block out enough light to the point where the UV will no longer kill the bacteria.

I have a softener, had it for years. I have calcium around my faucets, and when I boil water, I get a white ring on my stainless pots. Why?
It may not be working correctly as it may need some maintenance. I suggest that you have your cold and hot water tested for hardness.

Yes, it is, I've seen water qith hardness up to 120 gpg.

Great question! Water absorbs whatever it comes into contact with. When it comes into contact with calcium and magnesium in the ground it absorbs it and becomes hard

It depends on what hardness you have in your water as well as the iron and manganese content.

No it cannot, water can only be zero hardness or totally soft.

my water softener has a hardness level setting, default is 25. Is this ok?

Hello there, we live in an area with very hard water. The TDS is about 1000ppm, while the hardness is about 30gH / 54fH (not sure what these correspond to in gpg). Our current water softener system is proving to be rather ineffective, only reducing the hardness to 23gH / 41fH. It's an old electric-based machine that uses up a ton of salt, with a 90 minute wash cycle every 2 days.
We are considering replacing it with a new model, and a company is suggesting that we use their reverse osmosis system (Delta Escalda Simplex). Would you recommend a reverse osmosis system for water softening? Is it going to reduce our water bill, or increase it? Would love to hear your expert opinion on it. Thanks!
