This is awesome Michael! Did you form an LLC and all that stuff before getting work or did you just do the work and figure all the legal stuff as you worked?

I have a growing sharpening business in Thunder Bay and I am having a great time sharpening at the country market. I hope everyone with a knife in their drawer goes out and gets it sharpened by their local sharpener!

Yes! Knives need saving 🙌 Wow!! I hear great things about sharpening businesses in Canada. I am very happy to hear that your business is growing! What do you use to sharpen? How long have you been sharpening / running your shop for?
Please feel free to join the community & share any tips/info you’d like there too! 👋

@@SharperByMichael I only started my business 3 months ago. I sharpen at an indoor market which is nice because we have a lot of winter here and I can sharpen 2 days a week year round. I use a Tormek to avoid sparks, dust and noise and it allows me to chat with the customers as I sharpen for them. Gotta be quick to keep up now. I do have a 1x30 with a scotch brite for rust and a coarse belt for quick tip repairs and what not. Pretty basic but it seems to be working not too bad. Saving up for some cbn wheel upgrades once I can’t keep up and the business requires it.

I also have a 1 x 30 and wish I could get another two soon. I have the CBN Wheels. Using a work sharp a lot with bga.
Like to share notes if possible. @@aroundthewoodshed

That’s solid 😎 you’ve just stepped your feet in & you’re already killing it! Can’t imagine where you’ll be at a year from now. How are you liking your Tormek? Have you checked out Baz’s channel? @findonknifesharpening totally check him out - that scotch brite setup is killer for that work! If you want to use that 1x30 system more effectively for business check out curry custom cutlery on TH-cam and Cliff Curry (the owner) on FB - wealth of info.
Best of luck to you brother 👋

It's Britian all knives are scary and should be illegal everybody knows only criminals own and use knives. At least that's what I heard on the news. All seriousness I hope your business picks up for you.

I’m not a computer guy. But I looked at the two courses you offered and I didn’t see a how to sharpen and what equipment I would need to do this course only. I am not interested in the computer marketing business side of things.

Since its a new video Ill take advantage of being one of the first commenters and share my unrequested thoughts on why i havent joined your discord server. I might be wrong but i feel like you are trying to sell a course rather than genuinely wishing to start a community for the sake of having one. You seem like a market-savy guy and it *seems* to me like a regular "create a pool, then sell things" kind of thing.
P.S. the reason im actually writing this is not to throw shade or criticize but to get your thoughts on the matter

    • @SharperByMichael
      @SharperByMichael  ปีที่แล้ว +3

Thanks for commenting! I appreciate you sharing your thoughts. I can definitely see that, especially the day in age we are in.
      Here’s a few things:
The Discord server is essentially not active anymore, I’ve moved to a new platform.
For the sake of having a better community offering. Discord was very limited for longevity’s sake. For me, it’s not just “wishing to have one” (a community) but actually pushing to build one that lasts.
That’s why I’m so encouraging in every video for people to join it, if they have started a sharpening business or not. Whether they are in it for money or not.
See, the goal is for it to be a public community (you can see, it is free) that is an easy-to-navigate place for sharpening & sharpening business.
Very straightforward & beats out Facebook Groups and Discord communities.
My point of putting this specific video out is to motivate people to get into
      sharpening.
The community is free & everything I post in there is free to view without even signing up for an account.
People can choose to purchase the course or done for you service if they want to & I am open about it - not trying to “bait and switch” as all my cards are up front in the beginning and along the way.
I’m certain my sharpening skills & business will be with me for life - so with that mindset it only makes sense to grow a community along with me.
Now, it would only also make sense to offer them:
      1. My current & exact sharpening & business process for a fee so they can get up to speed if they are new and want to spend their money on that information.
      2. A done for you service (because of my market-savy & tech background) I can create these social media accounts, google, website etc optimized for what they need because it’s the business I am currently running and already do for myself.
I hope that gives more clarity on my intent & I definitely invite you to join the community! Again, it’s free. Of course, you can wait until my next free video that I post that gives away a good bit of my current business processes 🙌 cheers!

Hi Michael. I enjoy your videos quite a bit. I’m attempting to start a sharpening business, but I live in a very rural area. There are definitely more cows than people here! As far as I know, the closest sharpening shop is 70 miles away, which happens to be the closest larger town. I think the best way to find customers is to advertise and rely on being a mail in service. Do you have any advice on this particular business model? Thanks.

It's crazy to hear you to say "my background is in work with my hands" when you look 20. I'm sure that's not how old you are but it's just a bit funny.
