Hey John, amazing video seeing the reaction of that blue. I'm out in staten island and the fishing has been slow till a couple days ago. Finally starting to get a couple fish again since a couple weeks ago where the stripers were hitting everywhere in the Raritan bay on a Tuesday. Just wondering how it is out in long island. Hi John, Any tips for how to catch smaller cocktail bluefish? They're around 12-15 inches around me. I see them exploding on spearing and peanut bunker at all of my different fishing spots and I've seen others catch them but I don't really have a clue as to what these fish want to see...Lures? Lure sizes? Baithook sizes? Please help me catch my first blue, I'll take a cocktail or a snapper blue right now.

A great video John! The Bluefish was hungry but very wary . The pike bites the camera when the lure is much brighter than the camera. This is perhaps the same thing with a Bluefish. If that happens we always change the color of the lure. I made a lure yesterday no fish of prey can resist. Tomorrow I will make a video about my new lure and post here on youtube. Greetings Jan !
Hi John, I went to Robert Moses Field 2 today. For some reason, my casting distance was short. The lure always landed about 3-5ft behind where the waves crash. Can you help me about this situation?
Kev Z. What kind of line are you using? Braid I hope, and I hope the reel is filled properly. Not all lures cast very far. Diamond jig tins will get you near maximum distance.
John, I am using monofilament. I have 50 lb braid that is colored orange. The fact I didn't use it is because the Orange might attract the fish to bite the line. Should I use the braid? Should I fill the whole reel? I am using a 3/4 oz bucktail but I do have a 3/4 oz hopkins tin lure. My current reel came pre spooled with monofilament that is filled to maximum. The fishing season is starting and I don't want this to slow me down. What should I use?
I guess we don't know it all...long may that continue.....its part of the hunt....there is a good channel using cam. to look at lure colour and light ..bright V dark...(not my channel) Underwater Ireland...some great footage on Pike.....
If you search for youtube vids for water wolf you will see a lot of pike hitting the camera too and ignoring the lure. Could it be they are choosing the larger "prey" item in an effort v's reward situation. Same effort, larger meal.
Really? I love them. And Spanish mackerel. And Jack Crevalle and even ladyfish. The so called " junk fish" usually save the day when nothing else is biting
Jeremiah Giles Spanish aren't junk, either are Jacks in my book. Ladyfish are Giant Redfish bait too. The problem with our blues is they come in with epic proportions and like a locust plague. Right when I'm pursuing big Spring Speckled Trout. And those blues eat the hooks off our lines and Trout will not compete with those nasty scurge fish. So, we loose to those nasty things. And that's dollars to me, when I can't get my customers on the TROUT they came for..

Aside from cameras they also seem to develop a taste for barrel swivels.
Hi John, why do you think the fish didn't hit the lure? Maybe a jig or two would have enticed it more?

twomelsdorf I connect the braid to the fluoro with a small swivel.

Hi, John, is orange braided line good for stripers and blues? Yes or no. Does it affect the fish?
I'd say just go with green or white or something I had orange mono and it seemed like I got less bites

Small bucktails catch everything. They also like small shiny lures, like kastmasters.

Sure, Use the braid. 3/4 Bucktails really don't cast that well. What kind of rod? I usually use a medium action rod for those.
Kev Z. I prefer 30#green spiderwire stealth braid. 25# monofilament is a tough line to cast far with.
