  • Over the years, so many mechanical components and systems are being continuously replaced by modern electronic components. Ignition system is not an exception to this.
    In this video, we have explained about an electronic ignition system used in automobiles, called the Transistorised Ignition System. We have exclusively discussed the construction and working of the system with its advantages and disadvantages.
    Earlier types of ignition systems used contact breakers to break and reestablish the contact in the circuit. However, high current in the circuit may damage the breaker points and so, a limited current can only be used. Also, frequent opening and closing of the breaker points will not provide sufficient time to develop high voltage.
    Transistorised ignition system was developed in order to solve these problems. This ignition system uses a transistor that acts a switch and prevents the breaker points from damage.
    A transistor consists of three terminals, out of which one acts as a gate and the other two act as input and output. The gate allows a high current to pass through the other two terminals only when it is supplied with a current. This specific feature of the transistor makes it a prominent feature of the ignition system.
    The input and output terminals of the transistor are connected to battery and coil whereas the base is connected to the contact breaker. This enables more current to pass through the coil for charging whereas a small base current controls it.
    When the contact breaker opens, the base current stops which in turn stops the current to the primary coil. This collapses the magnetic field around the primary coil and induces a very high voltage in the secondary coil. The current due to this high voltage results in the formation of spark.
    The life of the transistorised ignition system is longer when compared to the previous types and it develops a strong magnetic field in a shorter time. But, the system is of high cost which is a major disadvantage.

    This covers the basic principles well enough, but the circuit probably looks a bit strange to most people. In a negative earth vehicle, the emitter is usually connected to ground and the primary of the coil is wired between the collector and the positive battery feed. Thanks for doing this series of videos.

      When you are right , the shown schematics is called common collector also known as emitter follower. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_collector

    So this system still uses points. Some systems which are very similar don’t use points. Are the pointless systems as good as those with points?

    Not working causes:
    - capacitor across primary to increase spark efficency;
    - safety zener to prevent voltage spikes across base and ground;
    - circulation diode across collector and emitter.
    Diodes and transistor must be at least 2 times bigger in voltage and amps. This due to the spikes that the coil in combination with the capacitor go to resonance (but this is a general case, you need to calculate it). The design is not working. I tested it in real life and it blows up in half second!!!
