    Something that thief 1-3 had which modern games have forgotten about is 3D directional surround sound which went a long way to immerse the player in the game world.

    I think you're taking the wrong approach to the undead and monster levels. With a few exceptions, combat is never forced. For example, I was able to play through the entire Return to Cathedral level in a very stealthy way, similar to levels with guards. When needed, killing various undead like the Hammer Haunts can be done stealthily by waiting for one of them to get isolated and then doing a fully-charged sword swipe to their back. When unalerted, this will kill them in one swipe, similar to how a blackjack from behind takes out an unalerted guards. The monsters/undead also do have a pretty similar AI system to guards in terms of alert levels, vision cones, hearing things, etc. It's just that it's not as easy to judge this from the sounds they make, since they don't say things like "did I see something?"

    • @SyntheticMan
      @SyntheticMan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You're correct, and I did use more stealth in the 2nd Cathedral visit, but more out of necessity because I ran out of fire arrows. It's a bit subjective but I just didn't really feel any reason to use stealth in The Lost City, Bonehoard, or Cathedral because zombies posed no threat, and there's no stat to track "number of times discovered by enemies".

      @@SyntheticMan If you have a back-up save for that Undead Cathedral level, I recommend this: restart it and buy some noise arrows and as many mines as you can! Then, get as high as you can inside the rafters of the cathedral, shoot some noise arrows at the main floor so you aggro those 3 undead wraiths, as well as 2 or 3 other zombies that come walking in there. Then, Start dropping mines and enjoy! Lol. I love that level, it's like one of the best survival horror levels ever.

  • @GepardenK

    Your description of zombies is spot on, but I can't say I agree it's an issue :) Yeah they're barely an enemy because they're so easy to avoid, but that's sort of the point isn't it: they're more an environmental hazard for the sake of the mood rather than an actual challenge. I also absolutely adore how you can pop them like a pinata with fire/holy; but even if you don't enjoy that it's still a completely optional activity since they're not really a true enemy to begin with.
    I think the implementation of the zombies is really effective at providing the fantasy each level that involves them is trying to achieve. So for example your first visit to the closed-off section of town is trying to paint this picture of a lone burglar scrounging through the rubbles of a city district long since abandoned to the undead. It doesn't matter that the zombies aren't "challenging" from a stealth perspective; they still fulfill their task perfectly in setting the correct mood for this scenario.

Thief? Sounds great. But let’s avoid taking and improving on all the things that the granddaddy of stealth brought to gaming. Dude, I'm so glad you finally reviewed two of my favorite pc games of all time and it's really interesting to hear a perspective of somebody who's playing them for the first time in 2020. Your criticisms are legit, but understand, if you played these games back in the day, like in the early 2000's, (2003 for me) there was nothing else out there that even came close to the same experience. Like maybe MGS2 in terms of interactivity of the environments and stealth, but the Thief games were one of a kind. The Tenchu games on ps1 were similarly mission based with limited tools and items, but their environments were so small and linear in comparison. It was extremely rare in games to have missions that were so huge, giant mansions had extra rooms with nothing special in them just because they could!
    One thing that's kind of disappointing, yet understandable, is how you used a lot of quick saves and quick loads, right? I understand you've got to finish the games fast so you can make the review and everything, but trust me, by quick loading your game as soon as the guards see you, you're really missing out on the other half of the experience! Part of the fun was actually running from guards and finding a place to hide, hoping they didn't find you, and then sword fighting them to the death if they did. There are so many hilarious and intense situations you could get into by running away from and fighting guards, like one time I was running away from a guard and an archer, and the archer shot at me, but hit the guard instead and killed him, lol, and shit like that is unforgettable. Of course, this is why you shouldn't play Expert mode the first time because you're not allowed to kill any humans, so you don't get to experience that! Beating the Thief missions in one sitting without saving is always one of the greatest accomplishments you can feel in gaming. Of course you're going to make mistakes and get spotted, but how you strategize with your tools and weapons after that without resorting to reloads is really where you feel the accomplishment.
    I think you'll really enjoy Thief 3: Deadly Shadows when you finally get to it. It might not be quite as good as Thief 2 in terms of massive mission sizes, because it made for consoles on the original Xbox too, so they had to break missions up with loading screens, but the graphics are much better and immersive. One thing that sucked was they took out the rope arrows and replaced them with climbing gloves that you find later to climb certain walls, so it has some metroidvania elements like that. Yes, it's funny you mentioned in this video because Thief 3 actually does have sandbox areas of the city that you can explore in between missions! Some of the best atmosphere I've ever experience in a game is wandering through the city at night doing side quests, or just randomly breaking into apartments to loot while people are sleeping. It's so good and the ending is very satisfying and ends the trilogy in a great way.
    Damn I wrote a lot and you're probably not gonna read all of it lol, ah well, have a good day!!

      Don't worry, I read it all lol. Sometimes I do get caught up in a "perfectionist" mindset with these stealth games where I save-scum a lot, probably just a bad habit from chasing achievements in Deus Ex and Dishonored. The sandbox elements in Thief 3 sound cool. I'll try to let things play out more if I get caught by guards next time.

      I first played Thief in 1999, got the demo with a magazine (those were the days), and was absolutely blown away. It was so immersive and creepy, I remember my own footsteps scaring me all the time 😃. Got the full game that same year and when I finally finished, it really felt like an actual accomplishment 😄. Loved Thief 2 as well when it came out. Took a while longer to warm to Thief 3, but there are a ton of patches for it these days that iron out most of the annoying stuff, for example all the missions are one huge area now, no loadscreens between areas. The hub area still has them, but otherwise yeah, a much more polished experience than originally.
      As for savescumming - I do that as well 😄. Got into the habit when I first played Thief. I like to play really sneakily and not alert anyone, so every time I'd get caught - immediate quickload, hehe. I know it's kinda cheating, but the feeling of not being detected at all beats the feeling of "dang, I didn't play through the entire level without loading once".

    I remember this game being released to the masses of reviewers who at the time were used to FPS games like Quake 2 and wouldn't compromise for anything slightly different. This game got votes graviting somewhere around the 75 out of 100 area and only got a vote that "high" because of the "novelty" being stealth. Reviewers complained about the lack of shiny special effects and didn't like the idea of guards, the "good guys" of that time being outsmarted or defeated. Luckily I got to try the demo, and I can say it was the best game I ever played.
    The title itself was contoversial, but when you think about all the negative, hateful, stupid or disgusting roles people can choose to play as nowdays, being a thief still looks like the least empowering of them all. It sobered up the person playing the game to the fighting limitations of the main character, only to be immersed into something entirely different than most of the other games out there.

    apparently thief devs worked on dark messiah, which i found basically has the same stealth mechanics. it has the light bar, which is a darkness circle at the crosshair. and the little things like how peeking and distance slightly affects your visibility. which is very different to dishonored where peeking does not affect your visibility at all. actually for me, playing dark messiah as stealthy as possible got me into the thief game, since it's the same mechanics but the map/patrol paths are much simpler, and you can always play the game as an assassin or just normal hack and slash because eventually certain missions you must fight.

    Not surprised to see videos about the rediscovery of LGS titles, but have you seen how much traction the middle Splinter Cell titles are getting now? I guess Chaos Theory isn’t mandatory playing anymore.
    I’ve actually made a comment about how new games best old games on one of your other videos, and it’s super relevant here. LGS refused to compromise on vision, and released Thief, which sold decently well and kept them above water, Shock 2, which is unbelievably good but also wasn’t impressive at all in sales, and Metal Age, which has to be in the top 2 or 3 stealth games ever made, and in the running for best level design ever, but basicallyput
    the studio under.
    With how big gaming is now, a developer doesn’t need to sell as many copies for niche titles, and larger publishers will buy smaller studios like Arkane and let them release games at a loss to fish for awards. We’ve had 2 Thief sequels and a System shock 2 sequel on the back of Bethesda’s shitty RPGs, and right now, New Blood is about to publish something similar.

    The problem with zombies and other monsters in Thief 1 is not the fact that they're supernatural, it's that it's difficult to be stealthy around them due to their A.I, like not always knowing what makes them suspicious or alert, not to mention the levels where they appear often have little to no shadows where you can hide. So you either kill them, or you flee. In both cases, the stealth element is kinda ruined.
    On the flipside, I liked getting lost in esoteric locarions in TG, and the atmosphere in the first game is top notch, definitely better than in the sequel.

      @zapan8748 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@morkgin2459 Understandable, and the maps certainly don't help. Granted, that can be seen as a good thing, because the game explains very well how you get those maps, and given that they are esoteric, mostly unexplored places, it makes sense that you would get lost more easily.
      That adds an element of immersion and credibility to those maps, but it also makes them more difficult to navigate. Though often it's mostly finding loot that is difficult on Expert.
      And ironically the biggest offender in that regard is the Thieves' Guild, which has a detailed map by comparison.
      Maybe use the compass more, and try to identify landmarks to know where you've been. Just a suggestion, though it's not that easy even for me, and I completed Thief many times.

  • @yvindHyland
    @yvindHyland 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I always like watching reviews of the first Thief games. Yours has to be the first review I've seen that takes the Thieves Guild positively!
    I have to disagree on the critique of the undead though, along with your positive opinion on bunny hopping. I get why you (and a lot of people) feel that way though - to each their own. When it comes to the undead, I suppose a lot of people didn't expect that from a game named Thief. I didn't either, and it scared the shit outta me in the most wonderful way when I was around 10 years old and I've loved the game ever since.
    Here's how I play the game, which is gonna sound very nerdy: The Dark Project (along with The Metal Age) is one of the most immersive games I know, and I like to roleplay - to the extent of limiting my self greatly for the sake of immersion. I try to imagine how Garrett would think and feel at any moment and play accordingly. I pretend him to be kind of unnerved by the undead, sometimes almost losing his composure, yet ultimately keeping his cool. He's a professional after all and remains patient and careful, sneaking around the backs of the undead like he would the living. However, his strict non-killing policy doesn't apply to non-humans, so when given the opportunity (like when he has Holy Water) he's not shy about getting rid of them. BUT, he doesn't do this in a hot-headed Rambo-style fashion, running in with a sword screaming "LEEROOOOYYYYY", etc - it's still done in a meticulous fashion, only striking from the shadows. Except the occasion when every undead in the Cathedral is looking up at him picking up The Eye, unable to reach him. Then he blows them all up with a flash-bomb (which is very satisfying). After the first encounter the undead in the mines, it's such a cool moment when you finally hear the whistle of humans, because you are relieved to finally be with the living again - even though they are more dangerous than the zombies. At least, that's how I like to imagine Garrett feels it.
    I never, ever, bunny hop unless it's a competitive multiplayer game. I wince every time I see someone do it in a story-based game. That immediately turns off any immersion to me. I get why people do it, if they want to speed-run and such, but it just turns the game into an arcade-like shooter to me. I don't even run in most games, unless something within the story or situation compels me to. In Thief, I even wait to open doors and pick up items until I'm within a reach _I_ find plausible - even though you technically can do that from like 2 meters away. If the AI does something silly or buggy that breaks the immersion, I often reload a save. Anyway, that's just my playstyle, which I understand is not for everyone (very few it seems like).
    Anyway, I liked your review and agree with basically everything else.

    Calendra's Legacy

    I completely disagree with Thief being one of the best. I like stealth games but I also think most of them are garbage. This is because most stealth games aren't fun. They’re slow boring, and often just turn into a game about waiting. A great stealth is is something like MGS 3 where the art of not being seen is in itself fun to do. There are also plenty of opportunities to have fun at the AI’s expensive such as throwing animals at them. Another game you should checkout is Aragami.
    Aragami has amazing stealth mechanics.

    I tested thief for Playstation 3,vit it didn't catch me much. Maybe was the wrong game at the wrong time.
    Try tenchu, I never played the original, but as far as I saw, they're good. They fighting is awful, so your meant to stealth kill your enemies. I playedthe last one I think for the wii. I played it through and almost all the extra challange. Controls were a bit clunky, but fun game. What I also recomen is shinobido for the ps3 (don't know the one for vita or psp), this game I loved. The co trolls are a bit clunky, but you have some sandbox in it. For example you have to kill a certain target, you can choose to kill the guard or not. If you kill more, it can happen that they got fewer with the time. Or you have to steal cargos with new weapons but you can choose to dispose it, the mission will failure, but you get rid of a potential dangerous weapon. This in so far important that you have 3 contractors, in one mission they hire you in another you're against them, that's up to you. You technically can kill on of them, even though it's not the mission. The Ai is sometimes stupor, when they rile up for example they kill each other trying to hit you. The combat here is more forgiving and you have a good chance. This is simply because you have here and there boss fights. You have tools gadgets etc. I love shinobido. I think you could like that game.
