FUN FACT: There are 2 metro stations in opposite sides in São Paulo City. PALMEIRAS Barra Funda (from the west side) X CORINTHIANS Itaquera (from the east side). These two stations are next to their Stadiums. How you can imagine, it really was a problem when in days of matches, because the Torcidas Organizadas(something similar, but also different in some aspects, to the European Ultras or Argentinian Barra Bravas), use to fight in the Metro. So, the São Paulo city government decide to enforce a law that prohibit matches from Palmeiras, Corinthians or São Paulo(they also love brawling) at the same day in the city. Also, when they play against each other, only the Home fans can go to the stadium.
Nice video! Some contributions, from a Palmeiras supporter: 1) This topic about some founders left Corinthians to found Palestra Italia is not a true, it is like a myth. There is no Corinthians' founders among Palmeiras' founders. Just check on official websites and you can make sure of it. This myth started because some players who have played at Corinthians, have played at Palmeiras in the earlier years; 2) Another myth is about Corinthians is the 'people team' and Palmeiras is rich. Palmeiras have been founded by italian workers in São Paulo city, just like Corinthians have been founded by workers. In the beggining, both has almost the same origin, of course respecting some details. I think this was the roots of this rivalry. Palmeiras had some support by Matarazzo Family at the time, is true, but it was concepted by italian workers. Palmeiras' money came from nowadays when Palmeiras organized itselft to be a strong club financially; 3) Palestra Italia (Palmeiras) helped Palestra Italia (Cruzeiro) to be founded. Actually, Palestra Italia (Palmeiras) had inspired Palestra Italia (Cruzeiro), as so that the Palestra Italia's Statute (Palmeiras) was used by Palestra Italia (Cruzeiro) to be your own statute as a model to be followed. But there is no friendship between two clubs anymore, after a huge fight between two main firms of these clubs in 1988. Look at this link th-cam.com/video/677Q5FoaVwM/w-d-xo.html . After Mancha Verde's president (Palmeiras' biggest firm) being killed some days before the match, Cruzeiro's fans mocked about his death on Palmeiras' stadium, in a match between two clubs. Mancha Verde didn't accepted that and almost killed Cruzeiro's fans who were disrespectful. After this episode, there wasn't any friendship between old italian clubs.

In fact none of the clubs he mentions are named that way as an homage to English clubs or because it was in fashion. Liverpool was named that way because the kids who founded it had just learned about that city in geography class and Newell's is named that way because it was started by former students of a school, the Colegio Newell's, much like Old Etonians. However, the old custom did exist; Boca Juniors and Montevideo Wanderers are two clubs with English sounding names that have them just because it sounded cool back then...

The problem with Corinthians and Palmeiras rivalry is that they have a lot of other rivals at the same state and different states that dilutes the animosity between the two clubs. There is also São Paulo and Santos in the same state and Flamengo now is a strong rival. This is like in Manchester where Rio Ferdinand says Liverpool is a bigger rival than Manchester City. The rivalry with the most irrational hatred for each other I think is Grêmio and Internacional. They are from the same city and doesn't have other rivals beside each other so they can't bear each other.
A rivalidade com Santos e são Paulo não é relevante para os times protagonistas do Derby, e a rivalidade não se esfria nem um pouco por conta desses 2, basta vc ver a opinião de canais corinthianos e palmeirenses a respeito disso
Nah... You are wrong. Even if there is other teams, Palmeiras considers Corinthians our biggest rivals so as Corinthians considers us their biggest rivals. There is no dilution... Even the Metro Station from east to west regions of Sao Paulo City are named with this two clubs as opposite sides (Corinthians-Itaquera from East Side and Palmeiras-Barra Funda to the West Side)
The "bourgeoisie" club is São Paulo F.C. Palestra Italia consolidate itself in terms of popularity by being the italian working class club and after Palestra became Palmeiras in 1942 it growed to the be the third most popular club in Brasil until the late 90's.

Amazing video. Truly amazing. I think we could also add that there were some opposing moments of local and national dominance between the two teams. I'd say that a moment of parity (at the top) between the two clubs would truly only come in the '90s and quite recently - in the modern era of football ranging from the '50s till today Corinthians in the '50s Palmeiras '60s and '70s Corinthians in the '80s (kinda. Both were bad. Palmeiras worse) Corinthians '00s Add to that the major encounters during both clubs draughts (Corinthians from 1955-77 - with the mythological 74 Paulista final and the sad end of Rivelino's tenure at the team; Palmeiras 1976-93 at a final against Corinthians, winning 4-0), and the rivalry gets even bigger. The class thing is real. It's an underlying cause, but it is something real. I'd say it never comes to a rhetorical forefront, but you can sense in the language of chaos between fans that it is acknowledged. Consider that some of these Italian families would later form the basic structure of São Paulo's middle class, and eventually, this middle class - some of them - would absorb the team identity of "defense" that is often connected to them. BTW, this is kind of a reproduction of the "colony" mentality that old Palestra Italia once had, that eventually wore off, and only kept the NOTION of defense of AN identity, not the national Italian identity. I do believe that a good chunk of Japanese and Arab communities would later adopt Palmeiras as a hometeam due to that. Corinthians had this rhetoric of "the team of the people" for long, but after the population Boom of the '50-'70s due to internal migration (The biggest industrial hub of the country at the time), most of the poor migrant population that came to the city turned into Corinthians fans. Make no mistake, they have a HUGE demographic advantage. Massive. I'd say that their fanbase is larger than Flamengo, especially for not having "mixed" fans (Fans that root for a local team elsewhere in the country + one of the majors). Which is funny for they always had this economical disadvantage against Palmeiras until late '90s, early 2000s. A little bit of economic development, and a change of focus towards an internal market-consuming society, turned this demographic advantage into a massive corinthians economic boom. Until the horrible conundrum with their home stadium (BTW, they were kind of "homeless" for a long time), they were keeping a good administration of massive financial resources.

It's not even close. Inter and Gremio, Fla-Flu, none of them even approach it. When I lived there it was incredible what happened when they played. The stories I could tell...
A part of the story that is missed is why there was a team called Corinthians in England. In Scotland there was a team formed called Queens Park which had the majority of the Scotland team in it and therefore they played together every week and got comfortable with playing with each other. Scotland beat England in a lot of the early internationals because of this familiarity the players had built up. England decided they needed their own Queens Park team which is how Corinthians came to be formed and had most of the English team playing together each week what allowed then to become familiar with how each other played and England started to compete and beat Scotland
Nowhere near is as big or as long standing, but one that may be closer to home. Maybe a vid on the Cascadia cup rivalry between the Sounders, Timbers, and Whitecaps for and MLS themed roots vid.
I think that to simplify darbies in the city of São Paulo, it's easiest to refer to the "darby Paulista" as a triple way darby between Palmeiras, Corinthians, and São Paulo FC. While Palmeiras and Corinthians notoriously dislike each other, both see São Paulo as the enemy. Historically São Paulo has always been seen as the go-to middle and upper classes club. Basically, São Paulo is such a large city it supports three large clubs, all of which despise each other (though the different clashes are referred to by different names).
Corinthians is more associated with the power classes. Than the other two. Their also one of the only teams that stood for democracy against the dictatorship.
Corinthians is associated with the masses, Palmeiras with the middle class and São Paulo with the rich. It's obviously not a rule, but it's roughly a good approximation.
Sao Paulo x Corinthians is named "Majestoso"(Majestic). Palmeiras x Sao Paulo is named "Choque-Rei"(King Clash). They are both important but its not the same as the Palmeiras x Corinthians, the only one "Derby Paulista" and its the biggest rivalry of the state of Sao Paulo.
So I am central European I very much love the sport of football or in English or in America what you guys call soccer. I will say without any hesitation that some of the world's best football players in the world's best football players in the world come from the country of Brazil one of my favourite soccer clubs in the world on a International level come from Brazil the Corinthians!!!! I've always appreciated football on a more local level and I feel that local soccer clubs are some of the most interesting life experiences that you can experience. So I have to soccer clubs that I love the most when is Legia Warsaw Which in the case of the country of Holand is the best soccer club in the country and has been systematically number one for many years now. On a International scale I love Brazil I love South America in general but Brazil in particular and the Corinthians soccer club to be very specific. When I watch the FIFA World Cup and team Brazil is playing I will only root for them I will be a fan only of team Brazil because some of the world's best players in the world come from Brazil. And to be honest in very Blunt about it the most entertaining games that I have ever watched was when team Brazil wipe the floor of any team that they come across. So I guess this is my way of sending love and respect to the country of Brazil I love your culture I love your people and I love how you guys play football it is truly amazing and thank you for this amazing life experience.
Corinthians is Brazil's most hated team even with huge fan base. The late 90s Corinthians had the sponsorship of Hicks- Muse which garnered them 2 national titles & a World Club Cup. Brazil's biggest rivalry is the Gre-Nal. The gaucho rivalry almost equivalent to the Boca - River rivalry.
For those who were interested in knowing which of the two clubs is bigger, Corinthians has 2 FIFA Club World Cups and Palmeiras has none ... GO CORINTHIANS ⚫⚪
What a joke, Palmeiras has more International and national titles, Libertadores, Brasileirão, Copa do Brasil, and more victories, besides not being broke and having doubts about the stadium, Vai Palmeiras 🇳🇬 🇳🇬 🇳🇬

Nice video adrian, love this series
A part of the story that is missed is why there was a team called Corinthians in England. In Scotland there was a team formed called Queens Park which had the majority of the Scotland team in it and therefore they played together every week and got comfortable with playing with each other. Scotland beat England in a lot of the early internationals because of this familiarity the players had built up. England decided they needed their own Queens Park team which is how Corinthians came to be formed and had most of the English team playing together each week what allowed then to become familiar with how each other played and England started to compete and beat Scotland
That team still exists, their name is now Corinthian-Casuals, a merger of amateur clubs Corinthian and Casuals, and they play in amateur divisions.

Which club do the poor citizens of sao Paulo support. I'm moving to sao Paulo next year. I'm from Manchester, uk
3 days later of the video, Palmeiras veat Corinthians for 4-0 in Allianz Parque (Palmeiras stadium) for Brazilian League
More ROTR videos I hope to see:

Big hug from Brazil and a Corinthians ultra my friend! Come to Brazil and watch a people's team game with the Gaviões! 🦅

I would consider the La Classique derby in France, Marseille vs PSG 🇫🇷
Corinthians is Brazil's most hated team even with huge fan base.
The late 90s Corinthians had the sponsorship of Hicks- Muse which garnered them 2 national titles & a World Club Cup.
Brazil's biggest rivalry is the Gre-Nal. The gaucho rivalry almost equivalent to the Boca - River rivalry.
You should make a video on the biggest rivalry in Mexico. El Súper Clásico between Guadalajara and Club América
