In this video, I will share 20 gardening tips for any gardener, whether you are experienced, or just a beginner. Over the years I've done quite a few videos that are specifically about the 20 tips listed in this video. Jim, those are all great gardening tips, and I've used most of them in the past. However, I haven't placed jars over plants at night to keep them safe from roly-poly bugs. I love the idea of cutting the bottom out of a basket and placing it over an in-ground planted petunia, which I've also never done. One other thing that I didn't know and found fascinating was that wasps eat cabbage worms, which is great news. If you stop to think about it, this makes perfect sense because wasps are drawn to the barbeque grill because they are searching for protein. Good Afternoon Jim - These tips are awesome especially the ones dealing with pests. Sometimes I don't know if they are good bugs or bad bugs so pictures to go with the names help a lot. i grow exclusively in grow bags as I have no yard but my deck is a jungle in summer. I used your tarp method to recycle my old soil with new and it worked great. Have a wonderful weekend and thanks for all the tips!

Curb discards, I pick up ice chests for pots, open drain plug for drainage, works great, I grow my herbs in them & they have a handle to move it with.

That was a big tomato , oh yea that sucker trick i did it and they are producing just as well as the main plant !!!
Well done on getting a sucker to produce fruit! Most folks don't even know you can do that. I think Giant Belgium produces consistently large tomatoes better than any type I've tried.

Thanks Bob! I just thought of another one. Don't plant too early. It got down to 26 degrees here this morning. I hope it doesn't go lower.
We're not gardening here this year but the warm winter had everything blooming and leafing out and we got a hard freeze a month or so ago. Everything died back and it looks like a few of the plants and even trees might not have survived.
Hope you didn't lose too many plants. We just had a hard freeze here a few days ago too.
Great tips! I'm always rooting the tops of my seedling tomatoes that snap off. They're very brittle plants and prone to tangle with one another, but luckily they're also very adaptable. I'm planning on rooting suckers of my cherry tomatoes around the solstice, hopefully for good tomato production in September like you mentioned. Last year, my plants sort of fizzled out by the end of summer.
I like your plan. That's a great way to get some late tomatoes. Lots of tomato plants have a tendency to fizzle out toward the end of summer. Good luck with this season!

I so much enjoy your videos and your mildly meditative voice. I’m chuckling.
Your ideas are so do-able!! I haven’t had many caterpillars on things….but when I find them…..I pick them off and put them in the open outdoor birdseed trays. Moments later…..caterpillars…Gone! And I shove any lost roaches over into the soapy water. Those are the few roaches who did not visit the ‘roach hotel’….you know. I will try out the sweet potato idea.
And yes…..for the great idea to freeze extra cilantro/basil, etc. I planted some of tomato suckers but….maybe they did not get enuf nutrition. I use Dr. Earth fertilizer for veggies…..but I have heard that I need to increase the middle number(phosphorus) for tomatoes. I’m learning. I’m subscribed since way back in time. Keep those videos coming.

These are great tips and ideas! I wish had known the plastic cups to stop cutworms! I lost some cauliflower transplants because of cutworms! Using this idea for sure!

I use soapy water when I bring my peppers in for the winter. Works like a charm. Have you ever tried burying the stem of an eggplant? I have heard they do the same as tomatoes.
Good to know about the soapy water and overwintered plants. I haven't tried to bury the stem of an eggplant. I might give it a try sometimes if I think about it.
Just stay away from Dawn dish soap. It's toxic.

I don't think I know what a cut worm is. I definitely didn't know wasps feasted on caterpillar, worms. Great tips and information.
Thanks! You are lucky if you've never seen a cutworm. They will cut tomato seedlings right off at ground level. One day you have a plant, the next day it is lying on the ground dead.
California here, a lot of cutworms here. They are fat little (under an inch) dark in color , usually with grey and some purple as well. Glad you haven’t had a problem with them.

I get tons of worms or caterpillars from the white moth or butterfly. I fight them all growing season. I'm in Pennsylvania and we're starting to get something called a Spotted Lantern Fly too. And our neighborhood has a family of groundhogs. I think I have them handled this year.
I bake spaghetti squashes…..and freeze the squash strands(minus big seeds)…..for later spaghetti dishes. I bought a small extra freezer 4 years ago from Lowe’s to put extra prepared things into. Was the best $250.00 Ithat I ever spent!! I fall back on those various frozen/stored foods very very often.

I like the way you think. Producing food to use later, is one step in becoming self sufficient. Well done! I agree about the freezer. We have a chest freezer that we get lots of use out of.
Use a garage sale blender to blend died bugs to put on plants to ward off or warn off other bugs.

Absolutely not rushing you at all! Your just a wealth of knowledge and tend to agree with what you say! We all can get much more from sharing our experiences and learning the variable around growing. As I think I'm narrowing things down I actually feel like my knowledge is expanding. And it's more about adapting our skills depending on what variables were thrown and at what season and climate. Having more tricks in our pocket help us to learn quicker. By the next season I forget a lot!!!

Thanks! Glad you found them useful. Sometimes it can be hard to tell which end is which on a sweet potato. Usually it is the narrowest end that goes down.

Just to keep you updated, my one Bundaberg plant died and the other one is dying. I don't know why, no apparent insect or disease damage. They just shriveled up and died. 😢😢 They did produce a lot of delicious tomatoes. I have 2 plants starting to produce and some seeds sprouting. I'm going to try again.

@@MidwestGardener Thanks. I think it's just the heat, they are next to my fence and it gets quite hot there. I'm planting the next generation away from the fence. Maybe they will do better there.

Dustbusters are my go to for insect control. Best $30 ive ever spent. Keep a container of soapy water near the garden and save yourself a lot of time.
