- This is the destructive test of a Ronin Katana Dojo Pro #9 O-Katana.
I run the sword though some tests and see how it performs then break it... More for fun than testing.
I had some camera issues on this one, so some of the cuts were not captured on camera.
any katana , even one made in japan with tamahagne , would suffer this kinda damage if it was put through the same test . ronin makes some legit katanas ! I've owned 2 dojo pros having the # 13 and the # 17 models , and both are still holding up very well to this day . I also have the dojo pro tanto # 3 , which is the biggest tanto that they have and its held up good so far . even though I havent put my tanto through a real test yet , I still feel that its a legit blade . I hit it across the handrail on my porch with edge contact and so far everythings good . If I get a katana then it'll either be a dojo pro or a hsts tsunami , and I have a 2018 hsts tsunami that I wont even cut anything else with that blade because of the grains that you can see in the steel . I polished that blade and the grains are enhanced and you can see the grains run all the way through the kissaki tip . one side shows it more heavy than the other side , but I can see that its a very well tempered through hardened 1095 spring steel blade and everything is solid . but I reccomend the ronin dojo pro to anybody that wants a tough blade with a thick spine. I love the dotanuki geometry and ronin does a very nice dotanuki blade . I like both ronin and hsts and if you get either brand then you getting a very nice katana for the money !

It is hard to believe that is a 1060 steel blade. Seems to be more like the spring steel on the Hanwei Raptors. I have a few 1060 blades and they would have bent badly on those tests.
dobitel9 I know heat treatment can make a big difference in blade performance but I am no scholar in that department. I found it rather surprising too.. .I got all dressed up and ready to have chunks of sword come flying at me but no drama.
About six years to late, but 1060 high carbon steel is able to take an extremely tough temper around the 50-55 HRC range. It will be tough yet flexible, but will not hold an edge as well as say 1095 or CMP crucible steels.
I just got a new-old-stock Cold Steek O Katana from Nihonzashi, and had them re-wrap the tsuka with dark brown silk. It has the nicer cast iron dragon tsuba and was probably one of their very first in the series, about 9-10 years old but never used. I really like this Ronin Dojo Pro #9. Considering the reasonable price and the fact that they are here in Texas I will probably get one. My dojo family tradition uses longer and wider, heavier blades. So finding them is difficult. Thanks for this.
honestly really impressed with ronins quality, the tsuka's suck and the ito is usually loose but for the price point they do alot right. also i got a scratch and dent model that was perfectly straight and it held up to all sorts of stupid abuse before bending, the edge on mine chipped a little easy but it does have that pretty ghost hamon.
This is the reason a prefer a plain 1060 through tempered vs clay temper. Try to bend a $10000 clay tempered sword the way this one was at around 12 minute mark in the video. You will end up with a pretzel. What do you do with that? Yes i get it the beauty of the hamon somehow people get lost just looking all day at it but to me is a weapon. As such needs to be strong. Funny as you never see a $5000 destruction sword video.
Good Lord man why would you want to put a beautiful blade through something like that I guess they send it to you free to absolutely destroy instead of paying for it I can understand
I had no intention of purchasing a katana at all. Zero. None. Well, thanks to your video here, I have just ordered a Ronin Katana Dojo Pro Model #31 Musashi O-Katana. This will be my first sword. Thanks for all of your videos, and thanks for helping me accidentally choose an O-katana as my 1st real sword.

I am suprised. An actual spring tempered 1060 steel blade! And after the horrible things it went through befor finally presenting it's "inner value".... I don't mind if the tsuka is poor-quality at this point. Tsukas are replaceable, right? The blade, however, performs awesome by the looks of it. I was initially very sceptical about Ronin's products as I have already read some reviews wehere the Dojo Pro #9 chipped while cutting bamboo. Now I am defenitely looking into buying one. Especially at this price range.

Yea, from seeing this testing, this sword looks like a badass! If I were a Katana enthusiast, I would definitely put on the worthy to buy list. Keep in mind they probably sent their best example to be testes, so, lets hope they keep up the quality.
Thats because it was a well tempered blade . any steel if tempered right , can be very tough . I would just stay away from stainless steel .
I have dojo pro #13 and im really happy with it . the balance is great but I would've liked to have it sharper out of the box but thats not a big deal to me . I do plan to put it on my 8000 grit whetstone and run over it a little and then strop it and that should get it exactly where I like it . everything is solid and the ito is tight . I just think ronin need to go with the rough textured ishimi saya because they make a very tough blade but the saya is all delicate and very easy to scratch . although I do like the bull horn koiguchi and so forth , but thats my only issue , is how delicate the saya is ! but the katana itself is a beast and it cuts very smooth and the blade geometry is quite different compared to the #17 model , which is a thicker blade that makes it slightly tip heavy but still is a beast . the #13 model spine aint as thick and the diamond tip aint as thick . But overall I am happy with what I got and I am a fan of ronin katanas ! they are my favorite mass production company .
I think I may have found my kind of sword. Excellent price, doesn't look terrible, and can take a beating. I appreciate this review, but I will admit that it made me cringe to see the sword beaten in such a way - but it is for science. Is this kind of staying power common in the dojo pro line, or is it this one in particular?
Seems common for their 1060 blades. They can take a hit.

Wow...that's one tough piece of metal. So shopping at Ronin in the 1060 class is not a bad thing, this blade will survive any use it was intended for. Thanks for once again a great review! :-)
I just got my 1st sword last week. The Dojo-pro #31 O-katana.
Well... this is wild.... you won't believe this... but... well... I accidentally ordered a Dojo Pro #10 Ko-katana... I don't know what's happening... those dojo elites sure do look nice...
I wonder if after 8yrs the quality is still the same? I'm going to find out, i've recently bought 1 of these, waiting for it to arrive.
Spring steel is much better than your regular 1060 high carbon, but 9260 high carbon silicon alloy spring steel is significantly better yet.
+NovaMan 350 I am no metallurgist. I can't argue about the properties of steel and what works better. In my experience the performance of a blade has relied more heavily on the smiths knowledge and experience with the steel they are using rather than the steel type itself. All things being equal, you may be right but I don't know enough to argue the matter. What I can say is that the sword took a lot of abuse before failing.. Maybe the steel is basic but it still took a beating before breaking.
+NovaMan 350 Spring steel is any carbon steel that has been spring tempered. Again, it's the tempering process that makes it spring steel. All REAL swords have been spring tempered.

@@raizowanderer yes it can ! I have an hsts tsunami thats through hardened 1095 spring steel with HRC 53-54 . its a very tough blade also

Fun watching a vid prior to the crochet stick O doom.
All other parts of the katana is replaceable, the blade took a heavy beating and through mechanical destruction did the blade break. Mono steel shows it’s modern value over traditional folding. Each katana has it’s particular traits and therefore only the owner can asses it’s particular use. One for cutting flesh, one for taking heavy abuse, one for aesthetic beauty, or the combination of any of these. The question always lies with the buyer, are you a foot soldier that requires a blade needs be taken heavy duty (like this blade being reviewed), a swift accurate cutter (that requires your own extensive knowledge and experience with cutting) , or more for nobility and collector status that the blade will not really be used to cut with and mainly used for admiration. Your expectations of any sword (katanas or European, etc.) should lie in what you can afford. Peace and tranquility should be transferred unto the blade which you’ve bought. If you fault your sword, then it should be removed from your possession. Be happy for what you have, or be happy that you have it? Peace ✌️
Absolutely and thank you for a good understanding of the mysteries of a Katana. Many don't realize this IS NOT JUST A WEAPON, it is a part of the warrior, and should be treated with respect and reverence for its power and grace. This is truly a masterpiece of the human hand and the Katana deserves it's legend. Especially the Ronin, often hated by many and treated as vermin and vagabonds (Ronin means wave in Japanese) meaning like a wandering hobo without a master. I urge those who wish to own this sword to read the real 47 Ronin, who put justice above death and is one of the finest examples of courage and discipline in Japanese culture.
@@deathstrike Im a fan of ronin katanas and they're my personal favorite mass production company . I even prefer ronin over hanwei any day . although hanwei do have some nice katanas , but ronin dojo pro is what I prefer . I have the tanto #3 and I have the #17 katana and both kickass

It’s difficult to watch you abuse and destroy these great katanas for no other reason then you didn’t pay for them so I need to go back to those channels that test but don’t deface, destroy and abuse for no dam reason other then they didn’t pay.
You may want to avoid the videos with "destruction" or something similar in the title. Not paying for them is not the only reason but it has a big part to play.
What o katana on the market would you go for? Cold steel, dynasty forge, ronin?
Not sure if hanwei makes one, are there any other companies I`m missing?
But basically if you had to choose, what would you recommend?
If I look at the Cold Steel, Dynasty Forge, and Ronin.. I prefer the Ronin. I think the DF and CS blades are pretty much the same. I think Cheness makes one as well but I am not sure who else makes an o katana. Other than maybe a custom piece of some kind.

In addition to the #9 O-Katana, Ronin also has the #31 Musashi O-Katana. For many years now they've listed the Musashi O-Katana as "on sale, nearly 50 dollars less. Just seems odd and am wondering if you knew anything about it. Maybe its not as popular or has some issues or something? i dunno. just seems odd . they both the same thing essentially 🤷♂️

On a slightly related note; how long do you personally soak those thick newspaper rolls before use?
Volla Volt Usually for 24 hours.. sometimes more if I forget.. then I let them dry for a day or two.

Volla Volt I'll give you the whole shpeel.. I lay out some layers of news paper nicely as a blase, layering them neatly. After about three nice layers, I just start throwing the news papers down. I will put a core in the middle if that is part of the plan. After they are rolled I will use packing tape or zip ties to secure them. Then I fill up a big garbage can with water all the way to the top and put the rolls in. I have to put a cinder block on the lid of the can to keep the news paper rolls submerged. After a day or two, I kick the can over and leave the paper rolls in the sun for a day or two (depends on how lazy I am). Then I cut them. I find that they are harder to cut than tatami of the same diameter. It is not something that you notice as much with a 3" diameter but 6" diameter news paper rolls with a core are much harder to cut that 6" diameter tatami rolls with the same core. The news paper is also a lot messier.. its like confetti when its done and there is a lot of cleanup. (I hope that helps)
Matthew Jensen It sure does! I've been saving a bunch of newspapers to turn into make shift tameshigiri targets, but I was worried they'd be unusable if I let them soak for too long, I never even concidered letting them dry and I think I'll try to replicate your process. Cheers!
Volla Volt I have forgotten the rolls in the water for three days... I have also forgotten them outside for a week or two.. they get a little ripe but they still work as a target. When they are really wet, they are a difficult target.. when they dry a bit they become a little better to cut... after a week or two they dry out a lot and they become much harder to cut again. If you let them soak for 24 hours and dry for 24 hours, then I think you will get close to the sweet spot. It is not an exact science (at least the way I do it).

Now I own a full set the Katana wakizashi and a Tonto they are so beautiful I can never imagine putting them through this kind of Destruction..before you destroy another nice blade..send it to me my brother..watching this hurts my feelings

You know the only abuse I have put my 2 katanas through was cutting up 12 different deer that I and my friends have killed , oh the musashi sword I did cut up some firewood at camp one night and I must say I have some very very very very good katanas, oh the other katana is a ray skin katana by cold steel.

Where did you get the armor?
I’m thinking about getting a Cold Steel Steven Seagal Signature Model Katana, which is close to the proportions of a O-Katana.
Would you say that Iaido techniques (certain drawing motions are more difficult with the size sword? Or is the extra 3 inches in blade length negligible?)
It depends on your size. It is harder to do some things but I find it just requires me to move my hips.. Something I should be doing anyway.
Matthew Jensen That’s kind of the only thing I’m worried about with buying that Katana. It’s got a 33” blade vs the normal ~30” of other cold steel Katanas. I know it doesn’t seem like much, but 3” could probably have a huge impact if draw speed/form. My only other choice probably be the Gold Lion or Mizutori.

Not sure, more models have likely been released sense I made this video. It should give you some idea about how they hold up in general.

I am not sure. I think so, that is what ronin lists a lot of their blades. I did not look while I had it.
How and where did you get your Dynasty Forge O Katana customized? it looks sweet! I have one myself, but I don't have any customizations done on it.

+Dennison Cox I don't have that one anymore. I sold it. I did not think much of it personally. It felt like it would be hard to control and it was not a comfortable sword. The mount was nice but it did not change the balance issue with the sword. I recall not liking it much. I have had that experience with many of the Dynasty Forge Musha series . If you like heavy blades, it might not bother you.

I do indeed like heavy/beefy, longer Katana blades but not to the point to where it offsets the entire balance, which the DF O-Katana is quite off balance and extremely blade heavy. This video has made me want to sell my DF for the Ronin O-Katana haha. So thanks!
