    2 things though
    - Jessica wasn't Leto's wife, but his concubine

      > Arrakis isn't the Harkonnen homeworld
      This is actually an interesting point in the Emperor's "offer" to Atreides -- they *had* to move en masse because they weren't being offerred control of Arrakis, they were being offered the planet as their seat or homeworld. A house can't 'own' two planets, so they could either accept the Emperor's offer and move, or deny it and thus defy the emperor and set them on a path to civil war as the Emperor would see it as the opening of such.

  • @cugan83
    @cugan83 หลายเดือนก่อน +152

    Arrakis was not the former home planet of House Harkonnen. Their home planet was always Geidi Prime. The Harkonnens were only administrators of the spice operation on Arrakis whereas the Atreides were granted the planet as a full fiefdom and had to completely move the house seat from Caladan. The Harkonnen's still had their house seat on Geidi prime while they ran the operation on Arrakis.

    The trap was laid not by the Harkonens, but by the Emperor himself. House Atreides was a potential threat to his power, with the capacity to raise a fighting force that could compete with the Emperor's otherwise-unmatched Sardaukar guard. And he was right.

    One of the reasons Herbert wrote Dune was due to the distrust he had of charismatic leaders and how the people are fickle, manipulable and surrender their freedom (with the respective critical sense and necessary distrust to the government) to follow the various scoundrels that infest the global history.
    The sight of JFK and the charisma he exuded - just remember the romanticism of his government and person that emerged after his assassination.
    The best passage of the 6 books is in the dialogue with Stilgar in "Dune Messiah": Genghis Khan killed 4 million, Hitler killed 6 million, and I sterilized planets." What a magnificent "hero" Paul Atreides was. And how the followers of a leader expand the mistakes of their leadership (religious, political, etc).

      Just an opinion, the first three Dune books are my favourites, and could stand alone as a series like LOTR. I don't know whether I'd even advise you to read the books by Brian Herbert. They can be fun, but they lack the depth of Frank Herbert's writing, and feel a bit fanfic-ish. Again, just an opinion.
      And as a total coincidence, I just finished yet another Dune reread yesterday, and I'm now halfway through Messiah, thanks to being stuck with a vicious sinus infection and nothing to do but lay in bed and read. Damn, I love this series!

      @@SPIKESPIEGEL1969 You can probably draw some parallels between the Brian Herbert books and the last three seasons of Game of Thrones. Some interesting ideas, but definitely falling down in the execution. I don't think Brian Herbert is a terrible author, but his books lack all of the atmosphere and subtle character work that make his father's books so thrilling.
      Personally, God Emperor is my favourite, as it feels like the most completely realised treatise from FH on all of the themes in his previous works. But I can see why some people find it slow and frustrating.

    Three glaring errors:
    -it is not an intergalactic empire, but an interplanetary one that spans our galaxy
    -Arrakis is not the “home planet” of the Harkonnens (Giedi Prime is), but rather it was their fief
    -Jessica never married Leto, that’s pretty central to the plot

    • @mrd1703

    • @AmyThePuddytat
      @AmyThePuddytat หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      You’re wrong there. Although we don’t here of anyone going especially far or millions of planets being colonised, and most of the action probably occurs just in our arm of the Milky Way, Herbert did call the empire ‘multigalactic’ and there are constant references to it covering ‘the known universe’.
      Those other two things are glaring errors on Robert’s part though, and I think they show that he is not yet deep enough into the lore to be able to make trustworthy educational videos about Dune at this stage.

    • @Caesaro
      @Caesaro หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @ At the time of the first Dune book (when this video takes place), I don’t believe anything in the text supports that, it is only after The Scattering (post-GEOD) that we get textual evidence of intergalactic travel.

    • @jayjones5756
      @jayjones5756 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I say it's an intergalactic empire. Folding space is not the same as hyperspace or warp speed from Star Wars and Star Trek respectively. It's instantaneous travel, so they could go anywhere in the universe. Nowhere in Dune does it say it's only in our galaxy. I actually remember it being said that the Empire spans the universe.

    • @Caesaro
      @Caesaro หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jayjones5756what you say doesn’t matter much compared to the text, which says the Imperium spans “the known universe”, and as far as I know, it’s only until The Scattering after GEOD (literally thousands of years after the events of Dune) that we get first mention of intergalactic travel/colonization.

    the spacing guild is wild, I was so happy you covered it. as well as the war to end AI. I can totally imagine humanity evolving into mentats and superhuman desert monk-warriors and secret all-knowing witch wives who create hand-sized boxes which contain pure unendurable pain, and THE VOICE, in about eight thousand years. I would like to also point out that one of the FIRST THINGS we did as a species, like fifty years into having computers, is make LLMs which are NOW indistinguishable from a human mind in some ways.

    Robert, I am glad you are adding Dune to your videos. Another very interesting and complex series starts with West of Eden by Harry Harrison. Really interesting, complex world. The starting point is , what if dinosaurs had never died out and instead evolved in to intelligent saurians.
