  • Israeli leading intellectual, Dr. Micah Goodman and Efrat S. Rosenberg, both also hosts to Israel’s top hit Mifleget Hamachshavot podcast, recently left Israel for the first time since October 7 to speak to audiences in London about the current realities in the Middle East, the political situation in Israel, delving into the weakness, the strengths, and, most importantly, to uncover the profound ideas that lie beneath the surface that many of us may miss.

I recently heard a sermon that added an interesting dimension to this. The rabbi made the point that the Jews have a different understanding of time because of how we pray. We do not say, “when our ancestors were slaves in Egypt.” We say, “when WE were slaves in Egypt,” which dissolves the distinction between then and now engendering a collective experience over thousands of years. It’s very difficult to explain to non-Jews, which is unfortunate because it means they cannot understand our attachment to Israel or how the Holocaust remains immediate for us. WE all were exiled from Jerusalem, and we all experienced the holocaust.

We are many non jews who try seeing these from different persoectives. What you say about what you say when you pray, explains a lot. Thank you. For sharing.
There Are many people who has experienced persecution. And generational trauma is real. But not all peope bring up their trauma every day. And prayer is supposed to bring comfort, I guess? That cant be easy…I guess this is something you talk about..?

@@eli-kathrinknudsen3644 Most of the historical trauma talk revolves around lessons for the present. There is very little wallowing in victimhood. When we talk about slavery on Passover, it is a lesson in fortitude, a reminder of the sweetness of freedom, and a call to abolish all slavery. There is no woe-is-me to the retelling. Likewise, Holocaust remembrance is about just that; we must remember this actually happened to guard against repeating it. If you listen closely, the only time Jews beseech the world to acknowledge our suffering is when we are confronted with Holocaust denial, or calls for the abolishment of Israel.

Very profound. I was caught up at about 41 minutes into this session with the "joining the collective"....I get it. I'm a non-Jewish Israeli. My people fought the War of Independence, my people fought the Six Day War, my people made the desert bloom....I'm still not a Jew but I am an Israeli and the Israeli story has become my story as well. I could never figure that out clearly until this year when I digested that it is my people that are at war, and yeah, I couldn't leave the country at war either. The penny finally dropped after living here more than 40 years.
So in addition to the "Jewish story" there is now the "Israeli story" and we belong to it - me and the Druze and the Israeli Christians and Muslims. Israeli is a thing, a collective, and a story.

How can Hamas be eliminated? An Arab poet says in a poem: “Whoever ignites fires is the one who extinguishes them, and whoever creates the tragedy is the one who ends them.”

If the military capability of Hamas is destroyed and the Iranian axis is weakened, the Arabs from Saudi and UAE have already said they will help rebuild and work to undo the radicalization and indoctrination of Palestinian society.

That's a pretty wild and slanderous assumption. For exceptional claims you need exceptional evidence.
And not only you don't have evidence for such assumption, but I actually have a lot of evidence for the contrary.
The IDF dismantled 19 of the 24 Hamas battalions in less than 6 months.
To put that in context, hamas had about 30.000 jihadists and a massive network of tunnels in which to hide, under the civilian population (civilians of whom 70% supports hamas, but still civilians).
On the other hand, an international coalition of both Western and Middle Eastern countries took 9 months to eliminate between 6.000 and 10.000 ISIS jihadists who had taken control of Mosul, in which they based their new Caliphate (remember, no massive network of tunnels there).
A Kurdish general estimated that in that battle about 40.000 people died.
If this to you is Israel "not wanting to elimitate hamas", I feel bad for those who Israel does want to eliminate.
Despite all the current noise about it, this war was conducted in a record level of efficiency and professionalism even if compared to the standards of western countries (middle eastern countries basically have literally no standards on how to wage war... look the war between Iran and Iraq, the war in yemen, the war in Syria etc.).

Please allow me: I am not speaking in a hostile manner or even emotionally. Rather, I am saying what can be read with reason and logic, while you speak emotionally for fear that what I am accusing Israel of, is true, while.. I am not afraid of the truth in case it is to the detriment of the Palestinians and the Arabs. So if Israel was able to crush Hamas, but it refrained from doing so. This is a condemnation of Hamas, which claims resistance and heroism, on the one hand, and a condemnation of the Palestinians who believe that Hamas is resistance, and not just a condemnation of Israel. I never believed Hamas, while you saw nothing in the matter other than a condemnation of Israel, so you set out to defend it, while I I do not defend Hamas nor the Arabs and Palestinians who defend Hamas. You in Israel fear that the accusations are true because this will make the claim of superiority over the Arabs collapse when it appears to you that you are deceived by your state and are being manipulated just as the Arabs are deceived and being manipulated and you will ask yourselves. Then: Where did we brag to the Arabs that we are citizens of a democratic state in which education is widespread, while the Arabs and Palestinians are governed by dictatorships that spread ignorance and backwardness? But if what I say is incorrect, then there is no need for you to be angry. Didn’t you say that Arabs always lie? So, tell yourselves that accusing Israel of supporting Hamas is a lie...and feel comfortable...but you are all worried...and you should...it is dangerous for the Israelis and the Palestinians. I have a next comment to respond to your comment, but I don’t want to go on for a long time now.

      - You say (that an exceptional accusation requires exceptional evidence). This is true, except that the accusation against Israel is not exceptional as the Israelis think. Rather, it is very widespread. I ask you to ask me the number of times I have read the accusation against Israel in American, French and Russian books about That. And I ask you to ask me for names Those books...not only that, but also that accusing a country of supporting the terrorism that it claims to be fighting, is no longer exceptional, as America is the one that opened the (show) by supporting Al-Qaeda, Bin Laden, and the Taliban, and restored the Taliban to rule Afghanistan, just as Israel gave Gaza to ..... 2005.

The lecture is interesting, however the thesis that the west civilization is luck of resilience and that the reward is expected immediately is a very narrow view, true for the last 30 years, not the time of the rise of the Western civilization.
It is obvious that both Europe and States were much more resilient during and after the Second WW.

Mordechai Kedar told a story of five generations. 1. fights to get what he has, 2nd generation knows his father fought for what they had, 3rd generation heard about the grandfather who fought, 4th generation has some idea about the sacrifice... 5th generation has no idea and is conquered by an invader. Oct 7th Israel got its Yom Kippur, its 1948, its WWII, its 1929... its 1834 (look it up, 1834 peasant revolt and near extermination of the Jews of Israel). This war has done more for Israel than any "peace process" nonsense. And is the repeat of the Arab Revolt (1936-8) in its long term effects. The diaspora has found itself on the same side of Israel, something it has not experienced since 1967/73 wars.

    - Under normal circumstances, you compare Israel with Western countries to show your superiority over the Arabs and Palestinians ، But in the war of massacres, you compare Israel to Iraq, Syria, Iran, and perhaps Burma, China, and North Korea to show your superiority compared to the worst. As for me, I continue to compare Israel with its claims for 75 years, and it has been raising the slogan of the victims of the Holocaust. ..You used to write books about the inability and stupidity of the Arabs, and now you write books about the ability of an organization to build an underground network even though it is under siege? Israel prevents fishermen from going into the sea to fish, but do you believe that Iran and Hezbollah are sending missiles in their thousands to Hamas? Or do you believe that Hamas is manufacturing rockets in Gaza?

There is no greater victim than the Palestinians, as they like to remind the world. They are unable to govern or feed or school themselves -- and it's all because of big, bad Israel. Why have they cast themselves in such a pathetic light? Why don't they claim their agency and do something about their lack of infrastructure and economy? Why don't they rise up against Hamas and create a better life for their children? Why don't they take one tiny step in that direction instead of depending on the world for welfare checks?

Come on, compare the numbers of civilians killed by collective West in their just war against ISIS but thosends kms away from the West, with the number of civilisns in Gaza, killed at the very neighbourhood of Israel. The numbers are much smaller even according to "the ministry of health of Hamas". We do not need to compare the ourselves to the bad regimes, we are superior in this war to Europe and States.
But this does not stop condemnations from antisemites like you.

We Arabs are not afraid of you, nor do we buy your lies. Today, public opinion in Europe and America no longer accepts your accusations against them just because. They are against your massacres.
