Tim would rehearse the skits along with his co-Stars. Then when the studio audience arrived and the cameras came on. He hardly ever stayed on script. That's why everyone would loose it. 🤣
Actually, how I understand it, they would do two shows per night in front of two different audiences. The first show Tim would do as rehearsed, and the second show is when Tim would go off the rails.
yea in this skit Tim said he found the skit boring so he decided to liven it up in the middle. This is where Harvey knew Tim went off script and started on his rant, you can see Harvey starting to smile knowing something is up. The part where he numbs his hand , at that part after is when Tim started going off tangent.
Carol and the producers wanted Tim to save his improvisation for the actual taping rather than rehearsal. That way they got the cast's spontaneous reactions.
Yes, Britt. This actually aired. "The Carol Burnett Show" was a family favorite for many years. Tim Conway was a guest many times before he was brought on as a regular. Harvey Korman(patient) was also very talented. These two had an ongoing rivalry to see who could make the other break the 'fourth wall' first. Tim usually won. The cast would rehearse then tape live. Tim would follow the script during rehearsal, then ad-lib movements, lines, and reactions while filming. The rest of the cast had to try to keep up. It is rumored Harvey laughed so hard during this skit, he actually lost bladder control a little. Tim's physical comedy was amazing. There is a skit where he 'fell' up a flight of stairs, in slow motion. His 'old man' skits were comedy gold.
Back in the wonderful days of, turning on the TV then going to get a drink, go to the bathroom, put the dog out, and get back to sit down just as the little white dot on the screen expanded to show a picture. Technologie sucked but entertainment was great. :)
The Carol Burnett show was a masterpiece of comedy and Carol was a comedy genius. Yes it was live and unedited, the best was watching to see if they could stay in character
The Carol Burnett show was required viewing when I was a kid. The best bits were when the actors were desperately trying not to lose it. I was so little when this show was on, but I still remember it.
Not quite the entire skit, but this is the best part. Britt, the Carol Burnett Show does have its own YT channel and they have posted entire programs from the show, You'll see how it aired, thankfully without commercials.
Conway was a MASTERCLASS of improv and not breaking character while he absolutely WRECKED those about him. I really miss this show and appreciate the clips we get... it was very late in my very youngest years, but the Best. The stupidest silliest most brilliant people who did not take themselves as soooo important... the people you'd want in your life. The friends who'd always be there to laugh at your idiocy and stand as your foundation when needed. This was such a talented and well connected group who knew they were blessed with that time.
The dentist, Tim Conway was brilliant!!! Harvey Corman, the patient, revealed later in a documentary that he actually peed himself during this sketch!!!
Yes this is what we watched as kids to teens with our parents. It was fun for the whole family and entire families would get together to watch. The skits were clean and funny. The late show was for the parents, with veiled sexual innuendos that any kids still up would not usually get. This was called wholesome fun for the family.
Yes, the light hitting his face knocked the tooth out. You could see Tim Conway alomost lost it too, but he was amazing at keeping it together His physical comedy is just so masterful. I loved that show. My family always watched it we'd just laugh so hard. It was just the best!!!
When the whole cast got together decades later for a reunion/interview...Carol & everyone talked about how it was basically Tim Conway's goal to make all of them break character but mostly, Harvey. Lol. He was & will always be a comedy genius.
This was such a brilliant show, so funny, and with such a fabulous, gifted cast. Those of us who got to watch it live back in the day were truly blessed.
I ALWAYS remember Carol came downstairs with the curtain rod and curtains in the Gone With the Wind skit. Not quite a year after the re showing the movie in town so I remembered the scene in the movie, when she came down the stairs with the curtain rod I absolutely lost it. One of the most entertaining shows on tv. It was great to be a kid when everyone could laugh at stuff on tv and you didn't have to be old enough to understand what was said.
I miss those guys. The Carol Burnett Show is really great. Especially since it's live. Once, Carol was singing and the audience started to laugh. She slowly turned to see what was going on...and the horse in the background was going to the bathroom. Carol lost it. 😆
This along with Johnny Carson show tonight dominated the airwaves there in the seventies it was the closest thing we had the social media before there was the internet. Carol Burnett is a comedic genius, but she surrounded herself with amazing people like Tim Conway this is an example of just how much they would go off script just for the sake of cracking each other up. And the audiences loved it. It was before the time where they started doing fake audience laugh tracks, which soured me on sitcom TV forever. This is back when it was actually real.
We had "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour" and" Laugh-in" during the Vietnam years. They were constantly getting censored but still got their point across with the humor.
Oh man, my mom absolutely love the Smothers brothers. Those are early memories for me watching them on television. Very fragmented but I just remember her just being so excited and she really didn't like television at all hardly.
See, I knew you would love this one !!! Carol Burnett show was good clean family fun !! As usual your reaction was so spot on !!! I just adore your facial expressions !!! Your husband is so blessed to have you in his life !!! Have the day YOU deserve...I like that line !!!
Tim Conway had one goal on the Carol Burnett Show. Make Harvey Korman laugh. He succeeded quite often and it made for some of the best sketch comedy in history. He truly was genius.
Tim Conway was a master of improv and every scene he did things that were not in the script and yes every episode was like these last two that you have seen.
Yes it aired on TV. Half the fun of watching was waiting to see if an actor could get the others in the scene to crack up & break character. It happened often & never was less funny. And usually it was Tim Conway that would cause the others to lose it in the middle of the scene. As someone who performed improv, I suspect a lot of it was improvised. They were all great comedians & it would be totally in their wheelhouses.
Little lady. I grew up on this show. They were the best ever. This is what we need. Dee, Carol Burnett show was one of the funniest shows around. Loving that you love this.
I was fortunate to see the Carol Burnette show every week. It was hilarious. It was taped in front of a live studio audience. You would never know what to expect. There was a lot of improv in this show and other of these type shows. The actors could not contain themselves. That is when TV was good clean fun entertainment.
@Miss_brittreacts_._._ Carol said at one time they would run thru the script in front of audiences…. Then when they went live Tim would just start going left on some of the scripts . They never knew when or what script they would do . They all did improve at times . Couldn’t wait for Saturday Nights to watch Carol Burnett Show it was a family gathering at my grandmas ….
You will never find anything funnier than the episode of Whose Line Is It Anyways w/ Richard Simmons. The audience was jumping up & laughing hysterically. Even the performers couldn't keep it together. Amazing improv show!
Use to watch the Carol Burnett show every week as a kid. Tim Conway is the actor playing the dentist and Harvey Korman is playing the patient. They don't make variety shows like this anymore. Classic show!
Tim Conway was comedy gold and one of the greatest improvers in the business. Yes, "The Carol Burnett Show" was a very popular weekly show. They would do rehearsals prior to the live show recordings. During rehearsals, Tim Conway would play his part straight to the script every time. When it was time for the live performance, Tim Conway always went completely off script to crack up his co-stars. He even took it further by getting the sound department, and / or costume department involved without letting the other actors know what he was planning.
The Carol Burnette Show was one of the best skit/variety shows of all time. Way before SNL, In Living Color, Chappelle Show, and others it was a staple in comedy television.
A lot of it was improv as the show was taped live, Tim Conway used to crack everyone on the show up. He, Harvey Korman, ad Carol Burnett were hilarious. It was as much fun laughing at them laughing at each other as it was watching the skits. Glad to see some of the classic older material make it's way to younger viewers.
Hey Britt, Carol Burnett has often recounted they taped two shows where Tim would play it straight the first show, the second show "as you can see" is where he would lose his mind, LOL! This cast and show were Comedy Gold with Platinum Status. And yes, we saw all of this on TV, there were no take outs. Tuesday night's living rooms, family rooms, kitchens everywhere would sound just like the audience in our homes with our families in hysterical laughter. (P.S. The sound effects crew would improve as well, the fly was on.....the fly.
This is my all-time favorite skit! I'm 37 and love Tim Conway! He is true, clean comedy! My boys also watch him. Most if not all of his stuff is improv. Which makes it funnier. He always tries to destroy Harvey Korman. The man in the chair.
Nice reaction. This was and still is great comedy. Shows like In Living Color and Mad TV tried to bring this back. I wish they would do shows like this again today. They are funny and very entertaining.
Awesome reaction and that is the way the show! During rehearsal they followed the script, during filming with a live audience, you never knew what Tim was going to do. That is why Carol regretted not making Tim a regular on the show. I believe in the 9 year run Tim guest starred 24 times. Dean Martin Show, he never rehearsed, that was how it was done back then, God Bless!
Britt Carol Burnett Show kept all or most of these funny moments on her show. She hired new actress with her similar features: Vicki Lawrence. You have seen her as Mama during the elephant skit with Tim Conway. Tim rehearsed that week's show with no problems, then he improv his lines to break his castmates from their acting. Carol and her producers knew that Tim's improvisations on each episode are gold mine.
Britt, this aired LIVE on tv; and that was actual audience laughter. Both Tim Conway (The Dentist) and Harvey Korman were comedic geniuses. They always made each other laugh hysterically by going off-script.
Britt! There were many variety shows on TV when I was a kid. And they would film them in front of a live audience. It was really fun. Many opportunities, in this case on The Carol Burnett Show, for Tim Conway to go rogue, off-script. He had a lot of other characters, most notable among them, is the "world's oldest fill-in-the-blank." He would play a doddering old man who would shimmy on the floor with his feet. In one skit he couldn't transition from the floor to an area rug because the rug was a half-inch higher. In another, he tripped while coming down the stairs. He was so old he came down the stairs in slow motion because he was too old to fall at a normal speed. Conway was a genius.
Yes it was The Carol Burnett Show I watched it every week and it was hilarious. I remember watching it as a kid also The Dean Martin Show u need to review that show also he was so hilarious. Sonny and Cher so many great shows. Tv is not what it used to I don’t even watch regular tv anymore it’s just boring and uneventful. The shows today don’t stand up to the what we grew up with. People don’t put forth an effort into their craft anymore. This includes music as well as acting. TCB⚡️
Tim Conway... making Harvey Korman laugh. And Carol Burnett. Annnd Vicky Lawrence. It's why we all tuned in to see Carol's show. What. Would. Happen. NEXT ?!?!?!!
Yes the show was LIVE, that is what makes it SO GOOD, and it was a live audience too, it's NOT canned laughter. The Carole Burnett Show was the BEST show EVER on TV. No, he didn't pull his own tooth out, it came out when Tim pushed the light into Harvey's face!
Tim was very talented physically. Tim plays a character which is an old man, which always moves slow. In one skit he does what looks like a slow motion roll down the stairs. Other old man skits are a fireman, clock repairman, hot dog vender and many more.
Tim and Harvey were always trying to make each other break character. They would always try to one up each other on set and they did it every time the camera was on. They hardly ever stick to the script and improvd most of the things. This was Saturday night live before Saturday night live! They even have dvd’s of this show showing all the bloopers and laughs they all did. Classic show and classic reaction! Very funny! ❤
Yea they used to show this on tv best time for watching tv back when shows was wholesome and fun to watch . Just wish they would bring back more shows like that.
These were the days of LIVE television. Yes, this is what aired on tv. No need for a laugh track. These were great days when my family would all sit down together and watch. Lots of laughs, and lots of fond memories.
Laugh tracks or very popular in the 60s and 70s. Of course the Carol Burnett show was live but there were a lot of sitcoms during that time that use laugh tracks.

@@libertylover4016 I almost forgot about the "little white dot"...lol
Not only did this air on TV, but it was live, not taped, so they couldn't do retakes.
6:46 - He didn't pull the tooth out himself. When the Dentist accidentally hit him in the face with the light, it knocked the tooth out
It's so great seeing young people like Britt watch what we enjoyed every week on tv. We had it made.
This actually aired. Tim Conways was a GOAT. This show was so good. Great clean comedy. Wish we had people as talented today.
Don’t forget Johnathan Winters!
The Carol Burnett show was a masterpiece of comedy and Carol was a comedy genius. Yes it was live and unedited, the best was watching to see if they could stay in character

I loved Carol Burnette Show. Tim Conway was always on point.
My daughter went to school to be a Dental Hygienist and they played this for all incoming students. Hilarious!
Yes, it aired. I was a little kid, but this was one of the shows we never missed. Tim and Harvey were a riot.
Tim Conway was known for his improv moments in skits. He had one of the quickest minds in comedy.
Yes. This _absolutely_ aired on TV. This is one of the few "grown up" TV shows I would actually sit down and watch with my mom. It was glorious.
It was aired in the afternoon when I was a kid in the late 70's.
Yes this is what we watched as kids to teens with our parents. It was fun for the whole family and entire families would get together to watch. The skits were clean and funny. I grew up watching this show and it was one of the funniest shows ever aired. Never made it through an episode without laughing...even today!!

Laugh tracks or very popular in the 60s and 70s. Of course the Carol Burnett show was live but there were a lot of sitcoms during that time that use laugh tracks.
