You bring back a lot of awesome memories for me Zach. I appreciate you posting and taking time to do your videos. When I was about 12 years old, my dad had a 48 Willis Jeep. He kept it out at the rig so he could go check the water well with it every day. My brother and I put about a million miles on that thing in the deserts of southeastern New Mexico. We drove the wheels off that thing but it never broke down or never left us stranded. We had so much fun with that thing hunting fishing. Chasing rabbits, antelopes, deer. What a blast!
As soon as I saw that glass, I knew it wouldn't survive the installation with you. I'm amazed at everything you do but finesse is not your strong suit. It's incredible to me how you take things apart and get them back together. You must have an incredible memory. Thanks for another great video, Zach!
Watching you do a gear box rebuild in high speed reminds me of a story I once hear. A bloke had to rebuild the rear diff in his Land Rover. He was so excited to finally have all the part and the time to complete the job. He threw it together, and couldn't wait to take it for a test drive. Problem was he didn't get far and had to do the entire job all over again, because he forgot to fill the diff with oil.
Snap-On used to sell the same self-powered dwell meter. Good stuff. I've had CJ5 and CJ7 jeeps, loved them. l laughed too when I heard you laugh as the jeep made it to 55mph. Kinda late now but I have a suggestion. A while ago you had a custom gear made for a pump jack but the hole was a few thousandths too big for the shaft. Instead of building the shaft up with steel use bronze rods and braze it. I've done this for shafts in old tractor gear boxes, also building up broken gear teeth and worn hydraulic pumps. Never fails. I've learned a lot from watching your videos and enjoyed every minute. The transformer repair job puckered me up a little. I'm a retired power electronics engineer... survival instincts kicked in. Thank you for making these videos!
Great video Zach. With points, it's best to find a set that has a phenolic rubbing block. The cheapo replacement sets use nylon and they wear out insanely fast. Also make sure to smear a little grease on the rubbing block every few thousand miles. I like that Jeep, looks like a blast to bomb down the trails in!
A friend in high school had a '45 Willys with 5:38 gears and a Warn overdrive, which gave it a top speed of almost exactly what you had after the gear swap. By modern standards, those old jeeps are definitely underpowered. They are still fun and capable off-road vehicles. It's just going to do everything slower than what we are all used to. 🤷♂️ That brought back a lot of memories. I can even smell that Jeep. Thanks, Zach! 🤠
We just got back from the San Juans. We camp in the BLM land just outside Silverton for free and go every year for two weeks. Still haven't done all the mining trails yet. You'd love it. Enjoyed the video. DS
Awesome! Man I haven't been in or worked on a good old flat fender since at very least the early/mid 90's so thanks for sharing! It brought back some fond memories that were nice to get my mind off Beryl
What a sweet jeep. Very nice. Back when I had point type distributors I would set the dwell while cranking with a remoter switch. That way I could dial it in exactly the first try. Seems like new part now days are worse than the old ones. Keep up the great content.
Love the idea of doing just what you have to do to get it usable. Trip to the mountains looked like a good time. What trail were y'all on when you were riding atop that ridge?
OMG!!! Absolutely beautiful!! Are those like public trails? What part of Colorado? I think that’s a little too narrow for my blood. Zack how high did you get? Everything go good with the Pete? Kc
Zach, take a look at Ouray, Colorado. They call it the Swiss alps of the US, and its all about 4x4. The trails are incredible and you can explore the old mines. Moab, Ut also not far from Ouray, just don't go mid summer.
Gday Zach, Well i hope you still have a thing for that jeep , now you've introduced yourself to every nut n bolt the old girl has. Made for a cool vid . Thanks. Respect....!
Hey Zach Way COOL video Not sure if any of your viewers under 40 know what points are LOL Then you blow everybody's mind with a dwell meter and a tach. Keep up the great work. So fun to watch.
You used to be able to buy a kit that took the place of the PTO and gave you a two wheel drive overdrive. I used to have notes on all my families vehicles as to what the gap had to be to get the perfect dwell in each
Hey Zack , Next time you do this just take the body off the frame. It gives you full access to everything with out looking up and getting a face and eye full of dirt. Just saying
WONDERFUL VLOG. I GAVE THIS TO AN ELECTRICAL BUDDY OF MINE WAY OUT IN MISSOULA, HE WAS MAYBE STILL IS A JEEP ROCK CRAWLER FREAK. LOL. HIM AND ANOTHER BUD THAT IS HIS BEST FRIEND OUT THERE USED TO GO TO THE DALLES IN ID ROCK CRAWLING WITH THEIR JEEPS. I HOPE HE ENJOYS YOUR CHANNEL ENOUGH TO SUB YOU CAUSE I DANG SHORE DO!!
I will be shocked if this transfer case doesn't leak or have a bearing failure sooner than later. I've built differentials for a living and the number one rule is not to build the differentials where you took them apart unless that area was spotless, free of dirt, old gasket materials and the old parts!
Love your videos. I’m old, but, as a rule, I don’t yet talk to my TV. However, this video had me screaming “It’s the coil!” ‘It’s the coil”. I’ve had it happen multiple times with the same symptom - several times with new coils. New parts does not equal working parts. More and more parts are made as cheaply as possible, by no name manufacturers in China, but sold under familiar brand names in the US. It’s getting impossible to buy quality aftermarket parts.
12:00 ateel on steel without a bearing in a transfer case is not uncommon. The drive sprocket for new process chain type cases are steel on steel with the main shaft. I'm sure other makes/models are similar. I put together a 263xhd last weekend. The bearing surfaces of the sprocket and main shaft were a little chewy. I should have replaced those parts but the truck has 450k miles. For what it's got to do it will live.
When you started describing the problem, I immediately thought it was the coil. I chased that exact problem around once on a old tractor. Wonder if a bit of the smoking was due to the coil giving a weak spark. Did you use the tool for those window gaskets? I tried doing it without one on my fj40 and decided it was worth the $15 bucks.
It makes sense now. I didn't. The glass is a temp thing probably anyway. I would like to section in a piece into the windshield frame to make the glass about an inch taller. The windshield is too short for me to see out of.
I kinda skipped around the video, but can't you do an off the shelf conversion to solid state ignition? Or do you value the old school equipment and its setup?
Probably so. Imo for something that might get driven 100 miles a year tho I like the originality. I considered putting a msd box under the dash and using the points as the pickup.
I was under the impression that 1955 was the first year for the CJ5. You can identify a '55 as it was the only year that had the front spring shackles at the rear end of the springs....or is it an M38A1?
@@TheZachLife That's cool....I always wanted to find one of the 1st year CJ5's. Saw one on ebay once down in AZ. It wasn't beat up, had no rust, and had had very baked blue paint. I think it was one that shouldn't be restored....better in as-is conditoins.
Zach - Put you some lube on the rubbing block on those points. The points you removed were Blue Streak points which featured a little felt pad which you'd put a couple drops of oil on it every oil change or so... That would keep from wearing the rubbing block on the points and wrecking the distributor cam. Also - Under the rotor should be a pad which can be lubed with a little 3 in 1 or Marvel to keep the mechanical advance from binding up. Another 'hack'... With the plugs out, use a starter button and crank the thing with the key on and you can set the dwell easily. Good luck!
I thought I knew most everything on points being I was born before that jeep. You never mentioned if you can now use low range in two wheel drive... hope that worked out for you. Just curious as to if a person shaved the head to raise compression which is going to be a lot of shaving if memory serves me right and use a higher test fuel like 98 octane or higher.... more bang is supposed to give a whole one more horsey ain't it/LOL. Guy ain't going to squeeze much more out unless ya turbo it. I really think a turbo would impress you if you could find one small enough
All these new electric parts we get nowadays are no longer made in America unfortunately who knows where China and Indonesia who knows. I don’t know so points points and condensers and coils are junk anymore.
New but bad parts have been the bane of auto mechanics starting with the 2008 great recession and only gotten worse with covid. Small-time parts manus have been bought up by conglomerates and the quality control is non-existent.
The thing I like most about the multi-day videos is that we get more cool T-shirts.
A penny for your thoughts is a little pricey ,,,,,,👍

Hahaha, I agree brazing it up would have probably worked. Thanks.
Man gotta love those m12 impacts. I order the new version that they claim like 500 ftlbs. Thanks for sharing.
They are great.
18:00 Never thought of that method for gasket making. If use the dark fiber material just use white paint sprayed thin
Great video Zach. With points, it's best to find a set that has a phenolic rubbing block. The cheapo replacement sets use nylon and they wear out insanely fast. Awsome video, I look forward to your continuing improvements on the Jeep.

This is what I'm going to look into the problem is that the overdrive bolts up where the pto currently does and I don't want to give up my pro winch.
We just got back from the San Juans. We camp in the BLM land just outside Silverton for free and go every year for two weeks. Still haven't done all the mining trails yet. You'd love it. Enjoyed the video. DS

Nice to see the Jeep out on the trails.

Intersting. I never considered doing that.
Coil was my suspect right away dealing with old tractors that and bad condensers find them alot love the project
Love that gear whine @ 55mph. ❤❤❤
Just sandblast and paint it, and I’ll buy it. It was made the same year I was born. Great video👌👍👍
nice to see you back zach, love the vids. no water not a very good gearbox lubricant 🤣🤣.
No shot at your mane squeeze. Thanks for the vids
I haven’t used a dwell meter in years. Great video!
Love the idea of doing just what you have to do to get it usable. Trip to the mountains looked like a good time. What trail were y'all on when you were riding atop that ridge?
Really good video Zach. Especially the end scenery
I remember the days when coils get hot. They break down and short out when they cool down it works again
Hey Stash Life,
Kool video
Maybe put some chrome tru spoke rims on the jeep, might make it run better
Mounting a bearing against a snap ring is textbook. Haven't seen it much in the wild.
real nice interesting content and I like how you put it all together.
OMG!!! Absolutely beautiful!! Are those like public trails? What part of Colorado? I think that’s a little too narrow for my blood. Zack how high did you get? Everything go good with the Pete? Kc
This was a public road that turns into a trail that starts in a town called Maysville. We were about 12,000 ft. Yeah everything went great.
That was very interesting Zack. The jeep looks right at home on those Colorado trails.
Best Wishes to You, Your Family and Friends.
Thanks, you too

Great video,
Thank you sir.
looks like we have the same window unit, your touch screen go out too?
Haha yes. I put a contractor in it and a normal thermostat.
Those T90 transmission and Dana18 transfer case are easy to rebuild, just use new gaskets and seals when putting back togeather
I do believe a hammer is Zach’s best friend!
You used to be able to buy a kit that took the place of the PTO and gave you a two wheel drive overdrive.
I used to have notes on all my families vehicles as to what the gap had to be to get the perfect dwell in each
Zack you can add a few degrees of timing when at altitude. Just turn it back down back at the lower elevation.
Hey Zack , Next time you do this just take the body off the frame. It gives you full access to everything with out looking up and getting a face and eye full of dirt. Just saying
I got a speeding ticket riding a 100cc two-stroke enduro. Down a hill, tail-wind, full tuck, 55mph flat out. I think we might be in the same bracket.
Maybe, we can take up a collection to buy you a windshield. Oop's, I spoke too soon.

That is a M38A1 with a mix of parts from other jeeps
Don't have to worry about scratching the paint bushwhackin out on the trail.

Wow that was better than the TH-cam mechanics in Pakistan that rebuild huge truck transmissions with a screwdriver and a sledgehammer.
Set the points with a feeler gauge.
Zach, you need to find a downhill part of that road and get it up to Ludacris speed.
Haha I don't think it would get up to 60 if you dropped it out of an airplane lol.
When you started describing the problem, I immediately thought it was the coil. I chased that exact problem around once on a old tractor. Found what looks like authentic gerry can , worn green , USA imprint on side. No dents. Great patina. $55 KC West Bottoms area.
Oops. Looks like you already have one. I saw the red one last night.
Do think changing gears in the transfer case , (high gear ratio ) would be better than changing the rear end gear ?
I kinda skipped around the video, but can't you do an off the shelf conversion to solid state ignition? Or do you value the old school equipment and its setup?
Probably so. Imo for something that might get driven 100 miles a year tho I like the originality. I considered putting a msd box under the dash and using the points as the pickup.
Rip window shaker.
I did not see any lube on the cam for the points. Did i miss that?
Do you have any plans to change the front gear ratio to match the rear so you can use 4wd mode or only plan to drive it in 2wd only ??
Yes I just ran out of time.
Howdy Zach
Dang Zack how did the lil 4 cylinder like the altitude?
Salida my fav place in CO =D hope you stopped at bensons =D
I didn't. I'll have to check it out.
I was under the impression that 1955 was the first year for the CJ5. You can identify a '55 as it was the only year that had the front spring shackles at the rear end of the springs....or is it an M38A1?
Through my research this is indeed a very early (#62) cj-5. It has the reverse mount shackles on the rear.

Definitely an m38a1 mabey it’s titled as a cj but definitely a n m38👍
Slash & burn with Zach!! lol

Is that transmission a Borg Warner T96?
27:00 OH GOOD I would've been disappointed if there wasn't a Ziggles repeat with the Jeep on the move.
are you going to put a 5.9 12 valve cummins in the dragster?
I thought I knew most everything on points being I was born before that jeep. You never mentioned if you can now use low range in two wheel drive... hope that worked out for you. Can you work some Zach life magic and put a turbo on there for some more power, that would be fun
Wow! It’s never the coil. Well almost never.
Those engines hate long sustained wide open.they take the rod bearings out.
Nice!
I like it !!
she's a sleeper!
Whats the plan for the drag car
The bigger the gap the shorter the dwell...an old VW saying
I see that air conditioner that's torn apart. So do you own anything that's not torn apart????
Haha
Guaranteed the lid is off the tank of his toilet.
Not enough power ?? V8
Where in Texas do you live.
It's too fast for that road 😨
Pursheate ya, Bud!
Put the wind’s shield down and go for it again
