Greg and Katie, I've changed my mind about changing the injectors in your D4. After watching your video for the fourth time, I think you've a low compression piston causing the gray smoke at start-up. It kind of clears its self up after the engine warms up. (be aware you engine does burn a little engine oil and oil level should be checked twice a day when being operated. But Greg, go very sparingly with the starting fluid. Two little squirts in the top of air cleaner ( it's the round thing right in front of you) should get you up and running. A little to much can get you a bent connecting rod and that means an engine overhaul. I forgot to mention the fuel filters; change them when you service the engine, at oil change time. Oh, if you don't have a hydrometer, NAPA has a very reliable one for the right price. Drain the Cooling System including the Block and replace the fluids with a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and fresh water and add a pint of "cooling system conditioner". About your Dozer Hydraulics, I got a better look at the Pump which kind of looks like a Hydreco. There should be a plate on the outer face of the pump. Hydreco is a little on the expensive side and it can be replaced with one of several other aftermarket brands that will pump about 25-30 gallons per minute and pump against 2500 PSI Head. I can't recommend you install a Piston or Vane Pump. A gear pump is the right choice and it should match the coupler on the front of the Crankshaft. I'm guessing you have a spline coupling. Now about your Hydraulic Spool Valve which currently, only lets you operate one implement, the dozer up and down. I would suggest you check out any scrap yard for at least a three function control valve so you can operate other attachments. Your dozer isn't Cat. It appears to be an aftermarket angle blade. The diagonal brace on the right side (it comes down from the right top of the back side of the moldboard (the dozer blade) and attaches to the top of the right side push beam. That diagonal brace can ne modified by adding a hydraulic cylinder for Tilting the blade - not angling the moldboard, just tilting. It make dozing so much better. A Cat 930 wheel loader's steering cylinders would make an inexpensive addition to a smoother operating dozer. Got any question? I'll always give you guys a straight up answer. Have Fun and keep sending your weekly videos.

Watching Starting the Cat #6. Greg put the transmission in 2nd or 3rd gear. don't use the two steering clutch levers except to steer. Use the shorter lever (master clutch) Try third gear first. When in first and towing to start there is just too much gear reduction.

Until you’re able to get the pony motor working, I suggest figuring out how to engage and disengage the compression release from the operators position. If successful, you can use it to get the engine to start turning over easier, then while turning over release it and add fuel. It will be less of a shock on you and the engine.

    • @StaySlyh
      @StaySlyh 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      ^^ totally agree
No need to blast the drivetrain by dropping the clutch. Just leave her in neutral and use the compression release - I believe that's how it was designed to work on all the stuff with pony motors
I was puckered every time he slammed it into gear (or dumped the clutch, couldn't tell which). Parts are hard to find for these old things, and splitting the tractor to replace the pressure plate because you sheared the bolts off the release fingers is NOT fun ... ask me how I know LOL

  • @blue68chevelle
    @blue68chevelle 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I don’t know about this exact dozer, but on some old dozers the pony motor wasn’t just to crank over the main engine to get it started. The pony motor was started and allowed to run for several minutes before trying to start the main dozer engine because, they shared the same cooling system. So when you allowed the pony motor to operate for about 10 minutes, it actually pumped antifreeze through the main engine block heating everything up making it easier to start the main engine. If it’s colder out, you might try using one of the handheld propane torches to warm up the intake manifold on the main engine right before you try starting it.

Greg & Katie, don't forget to cover the top of the D4 exhaust pipe to keep water from getting in the engine. Water down the exhaust can also cause lots of expensive problems in the engine.

Suggestion. Run the bulldozer (blade up) up and down your road to pack down the sand. Then use your tractor again and then the bulldozer again. It’s only temporary anyway as that sand will wash…you need something to stabilize both the road and the bank.

I worked for CAT for a decade, and the pony motor is pretty easy to fix or replace with a rebuilt or working Pony motor. The pony motor heats the block so the diesel engine will start in cold weather. You need it, or convert it to an electric start. I wouldn't recommend you stand with your feet under the blade held up by only a chain or steel rope, if you want to keep them. This was built when I was born, and handles about like me, but it will need some maintenance; oil chances, lubs, cleaning, and track has too much sag; otherwise you'll throw a track off, CAT is great for getting you part as you need them, anywhere in the world. So, take advantage of them when you need help.

Hello Greg and Katie. I think you should upgrade to electric start or at a minimum fix the pony motor. Also if you are trying to start the beast, make sure you are in second or third gear and get it rolling good and pop the claim if you are too slow it jump, spurt, fart smoke and die. Think about new hydraulic hoses and reroute so they won’t hang up.

There is a gasoline engine on the side called a "Pony Motor". First you crank it up and then engage it with the diesel engine. After the diesel warms up it is ready to go to work. I ran a D-4 for years and that is the correct way to start it.

This is absolutely the best you tube video ever posted. Rolling a bill dozer down a hill to start it? I had never thought of that? . The pony motor is definitely the best way to start it. The engine sounds really good. They definitely made them to last back then. You need some lead off ditches about every fifth feet to move the water off the road instead of just letting the water run down the road as is currently happening.

Do the simple and commonsense items first. Especially with winter approaching. Clean out the dirt and debris with a leaf blower. Power wash. Check fluid levels and greas nipple points. Identify and fix leaks based on priorities, costs, skill level, tools. Check belts and wiring condition. Replace as required.
Easy start is a main one. Confirm how viable the first stage motor is. Get that resolved and working. An easier fix might be the blade's leaking hydraulic hose.

Looks like there is water in the fuel. Need to bleed the filter until you see diesel. Check the engine oil, do a full filter service, check the fuel tank for water too. Hydrolic level does it need any? Transmission level? Air filter need cleaning or replacing? Check the track chains for wear, clean the zerks off and give some grease. How old are the batteries? Is the alternator working/charging? Clean and secure the posts and clamps. Radiator water what color is it? Check for antifreez, or add some.

This is very exciting from my favorite venturesome couple! I suspect you will be able to get all the helpful advise on the repairs needed and possible upgrades to your new, old, D4. I know Greg will be able to fix the hydraulics and the pony engine issue. Greg made me laugh while trying to start and then the initial operating. He looked like a mad scientist at the contols and I'm sure he was both emotionally and mentally stressed and tired after the road work. For as complicated as it appeared, I suspect it really is pretty basic operationally, just needs more seat time to get it all figured out and used to it. I'm looking forward to seeing what all you will be using this new tool for on your property. I know it will be a real time saver for you and feel it was a good decision to make this investiment. Blade dropping issue: I have never operated a D4 Cat but almost all dozers have a full forward fourth float position that puts the hydraulics in 'neutral' allowing gravity control (most useful when back dragging). Looks like you are working in 2nd or 3rd gear? Keep it in low when learning and digging. Most important, stay calm and don't get aggrivated. You certainly picked a tough job to learn on!

Many mechanics on here with great input on what your dozer needs and tips for operating. Depending upon what you're planning to use it for, and for how long, a worn-out dozer may suit your needs at a low price. If you plan to keep it and fix it up, it'll take $$$, but to clear some stumps and rough grade your lot before passing it on to someone else, it's perfect.

I love the bulldozer purchase. Please trust me on this one: “you need to purchase the book or manual on this dozer, it will save you a lot of problem solving down the road (no pun intended) if you really want to put it to it’s maximum potential”. These older tractors have a lot of quirks that can cause frustration, that’s why you need the original manual on the machine.

I agree with most of the comments. But if you dont want to address the pony motor right away, take time to adjust those tracks. It is is simple with a grease gun and proper fitting on gun. If track comes off you cannot pull start it to get it running.

Greg,& Katie, good purchase (Bulldozer). Gotta say, watching Greg maneuver that machine was nerve racking. I know you’re very capable, hearing you say it was terrifying let’s me know that you’re very aware. Wishing y’all luck with maintenance. Praying for your safety always.💯😱🙏🏾✝️🙏🏾🇺🇸

I love the "home brew" pony motor and hydraulics ! If the belt is slipping on the pony, start looking for double sheeve pulleys. Hopefully you can find a hydraulic expert who can help you out there.
A little TLC and that dozer will last a long time !
P.S. Get proper chains on all 4 wheels of that tractor before the snow flies !

The exhaust pipe from the pony motor may run through the intake manifold, which preheats the air and aids with cold weather starting.

looks like some good dirt to grow stuff it probably has sand in it and not a lot of big rocks in it except those round stones that were probably in an old river bottom that million years ago were tumbled in as big creek or river that has now change coarse and shifted

Back when you're done was built, diesel engine were lower compression than they are now. The starter engines exhaust runs threw the diesel engine's intake manifold to heat it so the diesel will start Easier. Without the starter motor running, it will be very hard to start even by pulling it. Normally it is not to hard to get the starter motor to run.

Those nice rounded rocks you are pushing are river rock. Makes you wonder a little? Library might have or can get operators and Maintance manuals.

Looks like the first job on the dozer is to tension up those tracks. I believe it's fairly straight forward. Then you can sort out the hydraulics.

Found this on the net. May be useful - Power Shift? Engine Running .. Can all the detents on the shifter be felt in all ranges..If not check linkage
Next step.. pull transmission oil filter and magnetic strainer
Iron or steel pieces or parts..transmission problem
    Bronze pieces...clutch failure
    Brite steel pieces..pump failure
    Aluminium pieces..torque converter
Rubber pieces..seals, o rings or hose failure

Injectors and seals are shot it appears.. The white smoke is a combination of sunburned fuel and exhaust. They can be rebuilt. O ring kits per injector are a bit pricey though. Pressure check the entire fuel system since diesel has to have no air in system for start up. It’s a shame you guys weren’t closer I have tons of parts and guys I could send to fix you up!

Greg & Katie your best move right from the get go, is to locate an older retired Cat mechanic thats not to greedy. I have a cat dozer D4 7U exactly like yours a 1950 year model. Get an owners manual & service manual. Get a retired mechanic thats willing to to show you how to get your dozer to start dependably, show you how to service your dozer. Expect to have put some money into dozer on a regular basis. TH-camr Northwest Hillbilly posted a whole series on rebuilding his dozer which is just like yours. Get a dozer mechanic that you can trust, that will get you pointed in right direction on getting dozer to run & start reliably, & where you should start on repairs, that dozer needs repairs right now. Maby get a few operating lessons for operating dozer, so you dont damage it, which can happen quick. That dozer can do a lot for you, but your gonna have to feed it some Franklins, Grants, & Jacksons. Good luck, welcome to CAT world

Be sure and ad some diesel anti-gel and water remover conditioner. I have had two of these small D4 cats, and just condensation in the fuel tank can cause white smoke when running. That's caused by water in your fuel.

Nice video. When pushing with the tractor i noticed how fast you were going. Go to low range and if you cant push it then take a smaller amount. Most of the time i run in medium range low with my 35 hp kubota. When it gets tough i go to low range low gear and it will push just about anything. Is your rear tires filled with fluid? If not I suggest you get them filed. I have R4 tires on mine no chains and plow my brothers steep driveway with no problems. Have a wonderful week

When cutting into a side hill like your doing you would typicaly have the blade angled the other way, pushing material out over the edge. This keeps the machine tighter to the high side and away from the edge.
