Bought my system in ~1988 for $20 from a local thrift store…. Still have it, tape drive and original tapes still function perfectly! Too bad not enough Adam specific software was released. It really was ahead of its time as far as styling goes.

The Coleco ADAM was (is) an underrated system. It used the Zilog Z-80 CPU opening up C/PM programs and Z-80 assembly language, (If you had a diskette drive)- If having a CP/M box wasn't enough, 99 percent of SmartBASIC was the same as Applesoft BASIC, Students with Apple IIs at school could use whatever BASIC programming they learned in school when they were home. So rather than just an add-on to make a "Kinda-Sorta" computer out of a video game console, It was a REAL computer! The "smart" keyboard and "AdamNet" made the (best on a "home" computer) keyboard responsive enough for even games written in BASIC. On the TI-994a: I always harbored a wish that they had made a TI Extended BASIC for PCs (not an emulator, just a DOS port of the language) It would have been "bitchin'" if it was compiled!

This was my first computer, and the computer I first learned BASIC on, ages 8-11. I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for this computer.

We had one of these when I was growing up! Such great memories and we never had a problem with the data pack drive. I remember playing Richard Scary's digital learning book (something like that) and my brother played a lot of Dam Busters. Smart Basic was also really neat to play with and print out pictures and such lol. Although I do recall the printer sounding like a machine gun. I used it well into the 90's before we got an IBM Aptiva in 93 I think, to type and print out many a school report. Also with the wiping of the cassettes, never had that problem either but the printer was about a foot away on the right side of the console. Great video!

marsm9 that's great! you could have had a later model, Coleco did eventually fix the issue with the data pack Drive. But the systems image was tainted by that point, and as long as you kept that printer away from the digital data packs on power up as well as and not being in the drives on power up they should have been okay. The tape drives did though eventually burn up the wheel, but that did take some time. I'm glad you had a lot of fun with your Adam I really enjoy the one I have now. You do have some pretty great entertainment value in it. it's a shame it's image got tainted due to its launch issues with that digital data pack Drive. That's one of the things I really liked about it...a high speed seakable cassettes that was pretty neat idea.
Also thank you very much for the watch and enjoying 😊😊

Kevin Laskowski .. if the issue with ADAM didn't exist, and shipped on time..with original price goal.. Coleco would still be around and we would have seen next generation CV consoles as well as 16bit ADAM II. But in our universe, it was not to be.. perhaps in the multiverse......

First time I saw one with the additional "cassette" drive installed. Great balanced commentary on my favorite system as a kid (along with the Colecovision itself). Unfortunately, as a kid, I was very interested in the media and features that were on the data packs (especially BASIC) and the media got fried by the big power surge issue one by one within a year.

The Colecovision ran on a Zilog Z-80 microprocessor. That was the same chip a lot of the cabinet arcade games were using at the time. Thanks for a great review my friend, good stuff indeed!

Thanks for posting this great video about a very strange computer system. I am an owner of the rare european PAL/SECAM version with 220 V power supply - there is a French dealer in Marseille who offers these right now.
Had the same problem with the data drive - Retro System Rescue sent me a working one - so happy about it....

excellent yes I know the Adam computer is quite rare overseas as it was never so very long. Yes retrosystemrescue is a great place to get some items especially a digital data pack or have one repaired. I just posted a new video about how to copy some files over to the Adam from a PC if you have an Adam disk drive. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and I hope you stick around for some more ones I make :-)

Audio cassette players can not "seek" in the same manner as the ADAM's Digital Data Pack Drives did. However, some later model audio cassette players had a "seek" feature, such as Sony's AMS (Automatic Music Sensor). During playback, one could simply hit the fast-forward button, and the cassette would fast-forward, recognize the empty gap between tracks, and then stop fast-forwarding, and return back to play mode, resulting in the next song being played. One could also hit the rewind button during playback to rewind to the beginning of the current track and automatically the player would begin to play the current track back from the beginning. Some fancier models would allow a listener to skip ahead any number of songs by simply pressing the fast-forward button the number of times equivalent to the number of tracks to skip ahead. Even fancier, some would scan ahead to play the next track, then play the first ten seconds of the track, then it would repeat the process for each track until the listener recognized the track which they wanted to hear, and pressed the play button. It may not be the same style of "seek" as the Digital Data Pack Drives, but claiming that audio cassettes were not searchable isn't exactly true.

Is it just the Adam tapes that are in danger concerning the Electro Magnetic Pulse ? What if one should have a portable hard-drive and/or diskettes for other systems lying on the workbench. AFAIK those are also magnetic storage devices, would they also be in danger of being wiped by the EMP if they should happen to come to close ?

  • @rbrtck

Having a bus or network for peripherals was not all that unusual back then. For example, Commodore had a serial bus that was daisy-chained between multiple disk drives as well as printers.

What are you doing with the camera? Shaking the lens back and forth!
3:00 8-Track tapes for computers was already obsolete by 1982. I think they used it first for the Computron of 1974, and early programmable electronic typewriter

i am thinking about buying one it is new in box but very expencive ...is it hard to hook up to tv out of the box? what do you think

    • @tarstarkusz
      @tarstarkusz 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It's not difficult to hook up to older TVs. If you only have a modern LCD, it might be a problem because they don't have NTSC tuners in them. You could always use the video out, but it appears to be video only and not audio.
It's a great system and the library has about doubled in the last 10 years. There are a lot of new games for it, plus all of the old one.
You really can't go wrong with new in box, so long as it actually IS new in box. Also, keep in mind that it has never been turned on and the caps in the power supply might need replacing because of that. But probably not. If it were me, I would not pay more than $200, especially because shipping will be a lot.

The most ignorant part of the adam was they decided to connect the power cord to the printer. The daisy wheel printer...why the HELL did they go with that??...was like a machine gun, it was so damn LOUD. I waited and waited for expansions that would have taken advantage of the slots inside the main base but the system failed so hard nothing came of it. The price was rediculous, the printer choice was ignorant, and nobody trusted it when the crash came. They rushed it and we got a mess of a system.
