    All my friends are switching to shakehand because they think it's better, but I keep on telling them to stick to what feels better! I personally love playing penhold and I have a killer backhand that no one ever expects!! It's so much fun

    Because almost everyone uses shakehand these days, people sometimes frown at me and think I'm weird. One new guy at our club last week asked me "why are you TRYING to play penhold?" I answered him by beating him 4 - 0. If it works for you and feels comfortable, stick with it and at club level opponents really don't like the extra amounts of spin I can generate from swinging my wrist. I totally agree with you in this video that total novices should start with shakehand because few coaches outside of the far east know how to teach you penhold.

    i actually switched from shakehand to penhold because i found it sometimes limits my reaction time having to make decisions whether to use forehand or backhand to counter some awkward balls using shakehand. penhold is just much simpler and much more fun even (i attached short pip rubber on the back of my racket lol).

      @@fightinglionenjoyer5409 yes do it, I have been playing traditional penhold with short pips for a long time, playing shake hand on and off, but always go back to penhold since it's so powerful with forehand and smashes, and very comfortable if you get a traditional Japanese or Korean style penhold paddle. The new Chinese style paddles are super uncomfy, but rbp is deadly if used correctly, I'm thinking about putting rubber on the back of my traditional racket just to see what happens 😅

      @KoreaFace I have played shakehand for like 5 years (im 12 rn) and when i saw the penhold grip for the first time, i thought it was cool as well. Now, i play better on penhold.
      Also, here r some tips that i could give (but i don't know if you can benefit from it)
      Tip No1: analyze Penhold players in tge top division. Eg: Felix LeBrun Jeśus Cantero, He zhi wen, Qiu Dang, Wong chun ting, Wang Hao, etc.
      Tip No2, watch videos about penhold. Some channels that priduces these types of vids are,
      PingSunday Coach Emratthich,
      MFLM Table Tennis
      And
      WTT.
      Tip No3, always pressure your thumb and index finger when hitting shots. This can benefit you a lot.
      Tip No4, always put your middle finger, your reverse index finger, and your pinkie finger placed together, withour spaces. That is more comfortable, and allows for better RPB.
      Hope this helped

    I started RBP and switched to shakehand a year ago due to pain in my fingers from pressing too hard on the back of the paddle when playing penhold. I still feel my backhand flick as shakehand can't come close to the RBP for over-the-table flicks. I tried varying my finger position in pen-hold but I just couldn't find a position that wasn't painful after a couple hours of play several days in a row.

    I have a problem with penhold..
    I tried to focus too much on my rpb...
    I tend to use rpb flicks, block and loop ..
    The result is I rely more on my backhand now so when I use my forehand its awkward...
    (I tend to miss some forehand swings)
    There are times I use rpb even on the forehand side (I find good results)
    My problem is transition from fh to bh and also the footwork maybe..
    The main reason I tend to rely on bh more is because I love to copy some of Zhang Jike's game plan (just the placements and his tendency to use his bh more).
    is it weird even as for a penholder?

    I'm a new player myself (played maybe 3-4 hours in school as a young adult, and now, 15 years later, I have started playing again with my new girlfriend. we played for 2-3 hours so far). I started out with the shakehand grip, as it felt more natural and more... reliable. However, my girlfriend is chinese. She suggested I try the pen hold grip. For the first minute I didn't like it much, but after a while, I decided to stick to it. The back hands are not easy, but I'm slowly getting used to it, but for the forehand, it made my game at least twice as good. My top spin is just incredible with it. Makes me feel cooler too XD

      Daniel Montoya The rotations for the forehand are generally the same for penhold as shakehand. I would recommend using your body and midsection as much as possible to hit the ball. As you progress you can incorporate your wrist and shoulder into certain shots. (Played penhold since I first started, RPB specialist)

  • @yuhss1767
    @yuhss1767 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Does the penhold require more wrist movement than shakehand? I use shakehand and I find that my forehands are inconsistent due to too much wrist motion, would switching to penhold actually make my wrist more of an asset rather than a liability?

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question. I think in some strokes the shakehand allows for more wrist naturally. For your forehands I would concentrate on not using too much wrist at all using the shakehand.

      With returning the serve, there's not a single way to do it since the server can put different spins on the ball. So the first thing you need to do is recognise the type of spin they put on the ball. Then you can decide how to counter the spin.
      With the serve we have a preview of this available on this channel. Google "PingSkills Tomahawk Serve Preview" to see it.
      We also have full courses on serving and receiving available on the PingSkills website for our premium members. So take a look and see if it would interest you.

      You can start from Yasaka Ma Lin Extra Offensive if you are a first time penholder. It is a real good blade, I have one. After you feel much better, there are lots of blades to choose depend on your style. If you want something light but fast as hell, you may pick TSP Black Balsa 7.0 (mine is 65 gr), but watchout for the bouncy or catapult effect from balsa wood. If you want a more comfortable or controlably fast, there is Yasaka Ma Lin Carbon. And... if you are a kind of hitter or puncher player, choose no other: Adidas FiberTEC Extreme is the best. I hope this would be a help for you 🙏👌🤗
      I have all those blades, that's why I can give you my suggestions. I also have Donic Black Devil CB, Nittaku S-5, Butterfly Hadraw VR and DHS Hurricane 301. Every blade has it's own best side, what we can do is just choose which best to suit our play style. But if you want me to choose it for you, I will look no further, just pick DHS Hurricane 301, the best overall performance blade 👍😘😁

      It's the new ranking systems where players need to play more tournaments to maintain their ranking. I'm sure the Chinese will play more this year and be back into the top spots.

    I serve with penhold (so i can serve fast and bit lower)
    but after that i change it to shakehand (it's easier for me to hit the ball lower)
    bad english :|

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      As long as it works for you that is good. With a modified shakehand grip you can also serve effectively and have less of a grip difference to switch to for the next ball.

      Yes I'd agree with that. The penhold grip is still very effective too.

    • @HarshadJoshi

      @@pingskills yeah, I think it's also something related to culture. Chinese, Korean and Japanese players follow penhold style more whereas European and Americans prefer shakehand technique, for countries like India, its usually the first influence that works well. Most of us saw shakehand grip as the first one.

    Shake hand grip is only better when you are able to do powerful loops on both sides. Otherwise pen hold grip has some advantages in small category balls control.

    • @tsalvo9290
      @tsalvo9290 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      if you can get the reverse penhold backhand you can get those massive backhand loops, or if you are good with a traditional Japanese penhold grip.
