I'm reading korean history lately. I was sniffing and had tears forming after about a quarter of the video. Then in the middle, I was crying my eyes off. Such a powerful song.
Seriously, everytime I watch this video, even part of it, I cannot stop crying! Such a strong song...
Michiko-gumiho Same here! I finished the entire syllabus on Korean history in school two months ago and when I watched this video, I was just...feeling it. It's a really powerful song that draws me in.
The specific sentimental reason why you felt something strong and sort of cried is that you had got the same feeling that Korean ppl have had for a long time, while listening to ARIRANG. That specific feelings or sentiment, we (South XD)Korean ppl call it 'HAN'.
And once you smile while listening, that's because of Korean specific sentiment 'Jeong' (or 'Jung').
In easy words, HAN is sad sentiment while JEONG means something warm and positive.
In extremely easiest words ^^;,
HAN comes from
= Korean ppl's terrible experience under the brutality of Japanese imperialistic Invasion or the Korean War.
(Japan had started to invade since 17th Century when Japanese power surpassed Korea, although before that time, Korea had always given the advanced cultural assets to isolated Japanese islands.)
JEONG comes from
= Korean ppl's warmth to care for other persons, or the positive energy that had helped Korean ppl to cooperate with each other to become the world 7th trade power.
HAN = (sort of) Negative.
JEONG = Positive.
Simply put,
once you feel 'HAN' or 'JEONG', there'd be no culture shock when you talk with Korean ppl.

우리는 아리랑을 세계에 알리려 하지만 아무리 천재 음악가가 연주한다해도 제대로 전하지 못한다. 철저하게 아리랑은 한국인만이 느낄수 있는 고유의 음이다. 그래서 더욱 구술프게 들리는거다.
한국인만이 할수있다는둥 그런건 오만한 발상임 우리만 한의 정서를 가진것도 아니고
다른 민족들도 민족적 자존심이 있고 긍지가 있고 슬픔이 있고 한이 있고 저마다의 사연이 있음
우리만 비극적인 영화의 주인공인냥 감수성 팔이 하는건 곤란해 세계인들이 비웃고 혐오한다
편협적인 사람이 되지 말고 다른나라도 좀 알자 나를 알고 적을 알아야되는데
우리나라사람들은 나만 알고 적에 대해서 수박 겉핡기식으로 대충 알고 애써 무시하고 폄하하니까
일본같이 철저히 계획하고 강대국이 되려 하고 정복이나 큰그림 짜는 적들한테 당하는거야
임진왜란때 일본군들은 조선에 대해서 갖은 정보를 입수하고 지형이나 시설도 궤뚫어 알고 있었고
반면 조선인들은 그저 일본을 섬오랑케 우리보다 열등한 야만인 취급하며 국방을 소홀히 하고
상대에 대해서 아는것이 없으니 초기에 탈탈 털렸지
일제시대도 마찬가지고
우리가 지금 한류로 좀 잘나가는것 같다고 으스대고 우리만 알고 상대를 모르면 다시 뒤따라잡히고 뒤쳐지는거 순식간이다.

이런 감동적인 노래를 듣고 난 후에 드는 생각이 '비난'이라는게 참으로 불쌍하다.
정치적인 문제를 여기서 우리가 다뤄야 하는건지... 그냥 보고 듣고 느껴라 친구들아
그래도 중국이러쿵 저러쿵이라는게 지금 우리나라 아리랑의 현실입니다. 이것은 정치가 아닌 우리 국민이 지켜햐할 것입니다.
우리 젊은이들이 엮어낸 아리랑 가락 생생하게 보고 느낄 수 있어서 그저 고마울 따름입니다. 많은 아리랑 버전들이 있지만 한 사람 솔로로 시작 그리고 하나씩 둘씩 동참하며 큰 가락을 만들어 가는 구성은 보고 있는 사람 모두를 저절로 어룰려지게하는 느낌이 있어 참 좋습니다. 언제 들어도 좋은 우리의 아리랑, 우리 젊은이들 이 가락을 지난 어느 세대보다도 더 훌륭히 노래 할 수 있다는 것 자랑스럽고 기쁩니다. 다만 한 가지 애국가보다 아리랑의 변주 또는 다른 민요 가락으로 마무리 했더라면 하는 아쉬움 있지만 애국가 또한 자랑스런 우리 가락이며 풀 오케스트라의 훌륭한 하모니에 박수를 보냅니다. 대학 시절 서울에 비앤나 필 오케스트라 내한 공연에서 들었던 애국가가 서울 시향의 애국가보다 더 멋있어서 느꼈던 서러움까지 시원하게 날려 줍니다.
정말 대단한 한국인의 긍지를 가질수있는 음악이자 한국인의 혼이 실린 음악이였습니다. 수고 하신 모든분들께 감사를 드립니다. 두고두고 많은 분들께도 꼭 보아야 된다는것도 잊지 않겠습니다. 감사합니다. 나도 대한민국 만세!!!

I have watched this clip several times. I love this song , I feel so great anytime I watch. I do not mind what the deep meaning of the song - just feel with tear is enough. More than 20 years ago, i was on bus in LA , I met one Korean Lady, we sang this song together. It was really nice. Thank all to make this happened.

그런 나라들과 친하게 지내겠다는 종북이랑 친중파들은 일제보다 더한 매국노가 아닌가?
일제때 조선사람들이 지금 북한사람들보다 더 잘살고 자유로웠고 융통적이였다. 민족자존심 따지면서 불행했었다고 부정하겠지만

This song is so beautifully written! This song leaves behind the traces of a once unified Korea and the want to still stand together. Politics have divided family history and love.
Unfortunately many N. Koreans are so brainwashed, nationalist as Chinese and many who are defector from war to settle in China, Yunbian providence who kept Korean language living in China still, have no wishing to be united Korea. Actually they thank to China which is still very political by China part as allies with N. Korea.

3.1 is the indpendence day for korea.so they must have arranged this event and chosen the place, Insadong ,where traditional things are preserved well.i dont know about Georgia well but seperated from Soviet Union back in 1990s? in that sense ,we have the similar history and you can notice how koreans feel on the spot.Go Georgia!!

I was telling my girlfriend about Korea and how it changed my life. I explained to her that there was the most touching song I had ever heard playing on the radio, it was sung by an older woman and a man who spoke English explained to me that this was Koreas' song. I looked it up on youtube and played it for her, she started crying pretty quickly not even knowing the lyrics.

I was born in Brocket Alberta, I have been living here in Vancouver, British Columbia for 20+ years. 25 years ago I was watching the Closing Ceremonies of The Seoul Olympics. I remember the music started playing and hundreds of people came down the steps on to the field to be with the Athletes. Arirang was what the stadium was playing. Seoul was the last great Olympics there was or ever will be. This music has since then been a GREAT MEMORY The Flash Mob made me cry
