Most of the fanbase think that Dimebag is the greatest guitar play ever to be put on this earth. but, he's not. trust me, i respect and love Dimebag but there's so many guitar players in this day in age who or better or at least better than Dimebag.
I'm a metalhead who started with the basics (Metallica, Slipknot, Slayer, Korn) . In that time I thought I was a hardcore metalhead (I wasn't) but it was when I got to the likes of Sodom, Kreator and Destruction that I really started to get into thrash metal. I'm one of those guys who likes both the old metal (Classic heavy, thrash, death, black) and all the new styles (Groove, Nu, Metalcore). It's shitty when there's old guys who only like the old stuff and young kids who only like the new stuff. Why not both?

LOL, Meshuggah WAS the groundbreaking genre of Djent, 1989, NO other bands were playing that sort of style then. Even Tomas made up the word "Djent". They are actually Underrated in my opinion, (I literally just saw one of their concerts here in Silver Spring, MD, there was like only 650 people at the show) they absolutely don't make money like Slipknot and A7X, so can you list specifics band to fit the Djent genre other than Meshuggah that were groundbreaking?
First and foremost, i greatly respect and enjoy Meshuggah's music. that being said, nothing annoys me more when i mention a band like Periphery or Volumes and some fucking douchetard is like "Yeah well... if it wasn't for meshuggah..." which in a sense is entirely false, primarily because they don't name them as a major influence. Just because i enjoy their music doesn't mean i owe meshuggah 15% of the glory because they "started it all". by that sense, everyone owes the ancients for creating stringed instruments and the dude who coined the word "rhythm".
I agree, i mean, MIsha did say that he drew some influence from Meshuggah but he pioneered the genre farther. As for Volumes they are more influenced by the Nu Metal movement in the late 90's and early 2000's. Just because this band uses tight palm mutes doesn't mean that they are completely inspired by Meshuggah

Avenged Sevenfold is a great band, but honestly, it is overrated. As well as Slipknot, AFTER their self-titled debut. Then he went on for a bit about a few bands I didn't know. Then a few I couldn't understand either. Metallica, Motörhead, Slayer...Idk. Everyone has an opinion.

Well, I was around when Venom released 'Black Metal' in 1982 and I had NEVER heard anything like it before. I think they do deserve credit for so much of what came next. I think Hellhammer were influenced by Venom. Venom started in 1979 and released 'Welcome to Hell' in 1981. It was groundbreaking stuff.
Also Bathory and Immortal were influenced by Venom. And I've seen photos of Dave Mustaine wearing Venom shirts from back when he was in Metallica, and Venom was a stepping stone to Thrash so I think it's safe to say Venom influenced Metallica and Megadeth to some extent
I really think you hit the nail on the head. Slayer and Metallica have been riding their own coat tails for years. They are literally riding the success of their first few seminal albums and not enough people have the balls to say that they're new material is uninspired and boring.
I would say megadeth too. it seems to me that megadeth today is just releasing records for the heck of it. one okay song and the rest are shit. I believe that Megadeth magic stopped after Rust in peace. countdown to extinction was a good album just left a huge musical gab between RIP

A remark to what you say about Motörhead: A person who is not able to name more than 20 Motörheadsongs should not be called Motörheadfan. Most of the fans of this group that I know personally do not only know the names of the songs, they are even able to sing the lyrics - and I mean the lyrics and not just the chorus lines !!!
Adding Venom to me was a bit exaggerated. Of course they are a bit magnified when it comes to extreme metal but I don't think they're overrated. I'd add Lamb of God instead. Horrid Pantera rip-offs regarded by teen 'jumpdafuckup' metal fans as metal gods. Meshuggah is spot-on btw.
1. Five finger death punch - Of course, an insanely boring band flushing out the exact same songs every album 2. Kill switch Engage - Boring metalcore band, bland and generic 3. Opeth - love prog rock/metal and a couple songs by these guys but most of their songs are unresponsive and never really go anywhere. 4. Motörhead - Sloppy, Lemmy is a horrible vocalist 5. Pantera - Heavy as fuck but I never quite liked Vinnie's dizzying bass drum and Phil's guttural vocal style. Not all 2000's metal bands but just some ones that I found to be a lot less interesting than most people consider.
Kyle Schneid Love Opeth, I own all their albums. definitely not overrated in my opinion. However I must admit that their last two albums and Damnation (that are straight up prog Rock albums, not Metal) even though they are enjoyable (specially Damnation), are no BlackWater Park.
I really have to say that you're beating up a straw-man with Meshuggah. I have never heard a Meshuggah fan claim that Neshuggah is the reason for odd time signatures being prevalent. They are the reasons for POLYMETERS (multiple time signatures at once) being largely present in modern metal and for the presence of extremely down-tuned guitars (and 8 string guitars specifically). Meshuggah, to me at least, is one of those rare bands that get an insane amount of respect for their originality but also deserve it. I agree with just about everything else though.
You can't call Venom overrated. They pretty much influenced every metal band that came after them during the 80s. Literally opened the door for different subgenres -- thrash, black, death metal. All those bands have cited Venom as an influence. They weren't really the best musically but their first two album set the bar.

Honestly to me noone is really overrated. Everyone has different tastes and not deviating from a sound should not hurt a band. They make what they make. You either like it or you dont. People will like what they like and just because a majority of people like a band thats them. That doesnt make the band overrated to me. What makes a band overrated is ignoring all other music just because that band.

Funny thing about all the mentioned bands is that they've all had at least one song featured on a videogame at some point so that explains why people only know one or two of their songs.
I really hate the term "overrated." It's basically implying that you think your opinion is more valuable than thousands of opinions just because yours is different. Other than that, this is a pretty good list for what it is.
Motorhead, really? Even though they barely get any recognition. They don't make the same song over and over. Just compare their 70s, 80s, 90s and modern material. They've changed with the times. Just compare an album like bastards and Overkill. They've done different types from Thrash, blues, and even prog. Also, they are really influential. And they got even heavier during the 90s. That's like saying Metallica is overrated because when someone says they are a fan of them, they can only name Enter Sandman.
Sometime people think too much and talk too much - all I know is that when I listen to Ace of Spade or Overkill albums my body explodes - that fact alone makes them great, period.

Im not keen on Lacuna Coil, Messugah or Hatebreed but lets be honest NOBODY HAS HEARD THEM. Unless this is a Yank thing but I live in England and i've been into metal since 1986. Most of my mates listen to metal but none of them have ever paid much attention to these bands. I think you're so deep into metal that you've got a slightly distorted view about some bands.

I didn't know what 5SOS meant. I had to go look it up. One glance at their pictures - they look like a boy band in the vein of N'Sync or Backstreet Boys. I'm not really a Slayer fan per se, but even I know they're more manly than 5SOS.

I like Slayer alot, but I think Sodom, Onslaught (minus the Grimmett period) and Kreator (minus the goth 92-99 period) are much better as far as groups that are still around

i like slipknot, but i completly agree the fans are the probelm. Im 17 years old and id safely say most of the fans of slipknot are around the same age range as me or a bit older give or take 5-10 years lets say. I personally think i have a really varied and wide music taste because i'm a massive music enthusiast and thats my main passion, but many slipknot fans dont know much other music because of their lack of experience and therefore think its the best thing in the world etc, so the young fans big it up to much
every band that signed with a label has sold out... they do what there label tells them to do.... minor labels start great and end in sadness and hypocrisy... its easy to be bought when they are offering you your biggest dream of being a rich rockstar..... Not to say I don't listen to major label bands, of course I do, I just don't kid myself about the reality of the situation....

Being a fan of a number of the bands u mentioned the only one I strongly disagree with is hatebreed. Granted, I am not a musician and how the music makes me feel is much more important to me then technical merit. But I can see your argument, to each their own.

I'm a die hard Slayer fan but I get what your saying about Slayer... Lol I like every album they've made even Divine Intervention and Diabolus In Musica and yes those albums do sound different but I personally just like them. I will say though that out of the Big 4, Slayer has an impact like no other, I personally believe without the help of Slayer's sound that Death Metal wouldn't exist, and I'm not saying that other bands didn't help. Bands like Kreator, Venom and Celtic Frost defiantly deserve credit on that but I feel like Slayer is the one who broke that barrier when it comes to the speed and aggression that help the Death Metal genre get on it's feet. Even death metal bands them selves have said that Slayer is one of the big reasons why Death Metal exists. But I will agree with you on the fact that there are some fans out there that are really ignorant when it comes to people not liking Slayer.

lets face if man...nothing can last forever. i respect slayer, i love slayer but you have to give it the fact that unless they tread new ground they could only get more and more monotonous and generic with their sound. most older bands who have lasted over 30 years owe their staying power to yes maintaing the fact that the original talent stayed with the band over the years but because they owe their fans to their staying trying to find new material while staying black and white and true to their you could say original identity could really be the death of these bands. in this age there is more to these bands disposal so it may be a good idea to keep experimenting rather than rehashing sound to cater to older fans and really look at finding a bigger dynamic to a more exprienced and polished talent and prowess. being fresh doesnt mean trying to stay relevant but really making sure we still love and listen to these legendary bands

I love Meshuggah, but I'm going to slightly agree with CKN on this one. If Meshuggah would've stayed focused on the riffs and song writing instead of trying to bottom their sound out with 20 string guitars I think they'd easily be the best band in metal today. I can just imagine Nothing with DEI sound and production and I think it would sound better.
Pantera, I feel should be on here. I love Pantera, their music is amazing and they are one of my favourite bands, but I'm talking about the fans that only really acknowledge the existence of Cowboys From Hell and later albums, not really taking into account the older glam-style albums. You don't have to like those albums, to be sure, but to completely disregard their existence is to disregard half of the band's history.
In my opinion, with nearly every band in the metal genre, you should dismiss anything past their 4th or 5th album. The inspiration of youth is typically gone at that point. This is particularly true with bands that have risen to some fame or fortune. Metallica is a perfect example. By their 4th release ( ' Justice), they've pretty much exhausted their creative reserve. The primary inspiration for metal is pain and anger, plus , a little bit of ignorance. The simple act of growing older and wiser handicaps the process that serves the young and dumb. It happens to everyone. When you start listening to metal for nostalgia, you're there.Having said that, Death Magnetic was pretty good.

I'm confused. Slayer was #1 but not Pantera. Pantera was able to avoid being included on a list about metal bands being overrated because it made #1 on the billboard. Which garnered respect from the metal fans? Doesn't that go against what Metal was and has always been about? I love Pantera and appreciate Cowboys/Vulgar and everything after. But I can't give credit to a band for being pioneers to a genre when their first 4 albums were glam. Pantera definitely hold the crown for most overrated band.

I'm insecure about being a Slipknot fan...mostly because of the fans. I totally agree with Avenged Sevenfold. I can't stand them. They suck ass. Like Slipknot, it's the fans that really kill it more then the music-even though the music is boring to me as well. Messugah-Agreed. Motorhead-Agreed. I like some of there songs a lot, but holy hell are they repetitive. I'm a bit of a hypocrite considering I'm an unabashed AC/DC fan and their biggest criticism is they're repetitive, but they're more fun imo then Motorhead. Hatebreed-Agreed. Lacuna Coil-Meh. I like some of their stuff. I don't go out of my way to listen to them though. I don't think you can call a band overrated based on their fans though. It should be about the music.

For instance albums like Inferno and sacrifice are clearly heavy metal albums, while all of the earlier albums (and a lot of the later albums too) are closer to classic hard rock. Some of the albumseven have a blues sound to them. Unlike AC/DC who have recycled back in black for over 30 years now. They've also done a lot of experimental songs: songs like Don't let daddy kiss me (Such a well written and sad song) one more fucking time, whorehouse blues and a shitton more. They definitely can do more than hard rock! Also the one thing that puts them above AC/DC is the lyrics. Lemmy writes absolutely amazing songs. Sure, a lot of the songs like killed by death are clearly very simple and rock 'n' roll, but songs like the already mentioned Don't let daddy kiss me has beautiful and sad lyrics that tell a very tragic story, or songs like I am the sword which reminds me of fantasy epics like lord of the rings, or stay clean, which tells you to not always worry about what other people might think of you and live by your own rules. I could go on and on because so many Motörhead songs have amazing and deep lyrics. Unlike AC/DC, who can only write very simple "Let's play rock and party!" type songs.
The actual definition of 'overrated' is when something has received more positive attention than it deserves. The fans are a pretty integral part of that process.
Pantera should be on the list. I'm a huge Pantera fan, but I have to admit they don't deserve that much of respect and recognition. First, they started as a Glam band and also, their Groove releases kind of sound like a Metalcore prototype, with those screams and cleans. The best example is Cemetery Gates.
I can strongly agree with the examples of how fans can be, but it almost sounds like an attack on a band for something they truly can't control. Especially for Metallica I can't agree that they deserve less credit than they are given. I love all 8 of their albums so far and think on account of the last four they are given too little credit. They were practically the kings of thrash (slayer definitely up there too for the more hardcore, less progressive side) and the inventors. So they could have recycled their sound partially and I wouldn't blame them if they innovated half as much as they did album to album. And yet they went against the wishes of the fans to express themselves as musicians. The black alum did technically come out right as thrash lost popularity due to the upcoming of grunge, but overall they seemed to be chasing a less popular sound at every turn. And they were given hate every single time and called sellouts by "true fans". It is because they never sold out despite the large taste they got of popularity that I think they, if anything, are underrated, especially for a pioneering metal band who innovated so much, had such amazing talent, and went through many personal struggles. Now calling them underrated does sound ridiculous for having literally the largest fanbase of any metal band, but metal itself really is underrated and so being pretty much every metal band who gives a shit about music.
I'm going to get decapitated for saying this, but Black Sabbath is overrated. Don't get me wrong, I love Black Sabbath, but there are way too many people who just see them as the undeniable greatest metal band of all time, just because they were the first one. I think there are bands whose music is better, but their fans just seem to give them too much credit for their importancy and legacy, and always seeing them listed as the best metal band, Ozzy as the best metal frontman and Tony Iommi as the best metal guitarist is imo taking it too far. I think they are some of the greatest metal musicians of all time, just nit the undesputable best.

To be honest I feel that In Flames is underrated considering they were basically the godfathers of melodeath. Yes they've changed their sound and I'd agree are maybe more alternative metal now. But you can't deny their influence on the future of melodeath

Ive always been a huge NuMetal fan, and for that ive gotten alot of flack from so called "real metal fans" whatever that means. That being said im kinda shocked to hear you say you enjoyed Slipknots first album over all their others because to me it was their only album that was really driven by the style of NuMetal, whereas the albums that followed seemed to me atleast to have a more traditional metal sound with less record scratching and the complete disappearance of corey rapping/skatting in more favor of soundscaping and traditional metal vocals. I wouldn't say Pink Floyd are overrated so much as overly rated. People say they're amazing, one of the best bands of all time etc which I agree agree with. But far too many people just say this to fit in, or just for the sake of it. Half the people these days who praise Floyd know like 2 of their songs, as you said.

Brandon Tadday Slipknot isn't really a bad band. I understand that people don't like masked bands, I'm not a fan of these bands too, but their music is really good. It isn't the same as thrash metal or death metal (generally more technical kinds of metal), but it's sounds really interesting. Simpler music isn't always a bad music. I want to even say that it's a paradoxically, underrated band. A lot of teens, who don't know much about metal, say they are good, but a usual metalhead almost always say they are shitty. It's a only thing which with I can't agree, even I tried to understand that before. Nu metal isn't my favorite kind of metal (it is still metal for me), even I don't like it, but I have that one expection.

Honestly, to list the overrated metal bands of the 20th century just basically think of all the bands that still continue to have a huge fanbase from Heavy Metal, NWOBHM, Thrash, Death, and Groove but heck its far beyond just ten...but that's basically all you have to think about, so you have your Maiden, Metallica, Slayer, Cannibal Corpse, Pantera, Venom, Slipknot, Avenged Sevenfold, and all the others I can't think of..but in reality don't you kind of think they should deserve all that praise?...maybe not Metallica at some points in time, and yes others really do take it too far, im guilty of that when it comes to Iron Maiden but still we all still listen to them like if its our first time hearing them.......but hey it's still better than these shitty "scene" or "core" or whatever the fuck my generation listens to now.....so who cares? Maiden got better in the later years ! The guitar work got even better after 2000, especially with Adrian Smith. They got much more progressive, and if you ask me, it's for the best !

I'm a metalhead who started with the basics (Metallica, Slipknot, Slayer, Korn) . In that time I thought I was a hardcore metalhead (I wasn't) but it was when I got to the likes of Sodom, Kreator and Destruction that I really started to get into thrash metal. I'm one of those guys who likes both the old metal (Classic heavy, thrash, death, black) and all the new styles (Groove, Nu, Metalcore). It's shitty when there's old guys who only like the old stuff and young kids who only like the new stuff. Why not both?

They are actually Underrated in my opinion, (I literally just saw one of their concerts here in Silver Spring, MD, there was like only 650 people at the show) they absolutely don't make money like Slipknot and A7X, so can you list specifics band to fit the Djent genre other than Meshuggah that were groundbreaking?
First and foremost, i greatly respect and enjoy Meshuggah's music. that being said, nothing annoys me more when i mention a band like Periphery or Volumes and some fucking douchetard is like "Yeah well... if it wasn't for meshuggah..." which in a sense is entirely false, primarily because they don't name them as a major influence. Just because i enjoy their music doesn't mean i owe meshuggah 15% of the glory because they "started it all". by that sense, everyone owes the ancients for creating stringed instruments and the dude who coined the word "rhythm".

As for Volumes they are more influenced by the Nu Metal movement in the late 90's and early 2000's. Just because this band uses tight palm mutes doesn't mean that they are completely inspired by Meshuggah

Well, I was around when Venom released 'Black Metal' in 1982 and I had NEVER heard anything like it before. I think they do deserve credit for so much of what came next. I think Hellhammer were influenced by Venom. Venom started in 1979 and released 'Welcome to Hell' in 1981. It was groundbreaking stuff.
Also Bathory and Immortal were influenced by Venom. And I've seen photos of Dave Mustaine wearing Venom shirts from back when he was in Metallica, and Venom was a stepping stone to Thrash so I think it's safe to say Venom influenced Metallica and Megadeth to some extent

Adding Venom to me was a bit exaggerated. Of course they are a bit magnified when it comes to extreme metal but I don't think they're overrated. I'd add Lamb of God instead. Horrid Pantera rip-offs regarded by teen 'jumpdafuckup' metal fans as metal gods. Meshuggah is spot-on btw.

1. Five finger death punch - Of course, an insanely boring band flushing out the exact same songs every album
2. Kill switch Engage - Boring metalcore band, bland and generic
3. Opeth - love prog rock/metal and a couple songs by these guys but most of their songs are unresponsive and never really go anywhere.
4. Motörhead - Sloppy, Lemmy is a horrible vocalist
5. Pantera - Heavy as fuck but I never quite liked Vinnie's dizzying bass drum and Phil's guttural vocal style.

I really have to say that you're beating up a straw-man with Meshuggah. I have never heard a Meshuggah fan claim that Neshuggah is the reason for odd time signatures being prevalent. They are the reasons for POLYMETERS (multiple time signatures at once) being largely present in modern metal and for the presence of extremely down-tuned guitars (and 8 string guitars specifically). Meshuggah, to me at least, is one of those rare bands that get an insane amount of respect for their originality but also deserve it.

i like slipknot, but i completly agree the fans are the probelm. Im 17 years old and id safely say most of the fans of slipknot are around the same age range as me or a bit older give or take 5-10 years lets say. I personally think i have a really varied and wide music taste because i'm a massive music enthusiast and thats my main passion, but many slipknot fans dont know much other music because of their lack of experience and therefore think its the best thing in the world etc, so the young fans big it up to much

every band that signed with a label has sold out... they do what there label tells them to do.... minor labels start great and end in sadness and hypocrisy... its easy to be bought when they are offering you your biggest dream of being a rich rockstar..... I'm a die hard Slayer fan but I get what your saying about Slayer... Lol I like every album they've made even Divine Intervention and Diabolus In Musica and yes those albums do sound different but I personally just like them. I will say though that out of the Big 4, Slayer has an impact like no other, I personally believe without the help of Slayer's sound that Death Metal wouldn't exist, and I'm not saying that other bands didn't help. Bands like Kreator, Venom and Celtic Frost defiantly deserve credit on that but I feel like Slayer is the one who broke that barrier when it comes to the speed and aggression that help the Death Metal genre get on it's feet. Even death metal bands them selves have said that Slayer is one of the big reasons why Death Metal exists. But I will agree with you on the fact that there are some fans out there that are really ignorant when it comes to people not liking Slayer.

lets face if man...nothing can last forever. i respect slayer, i love slayer but you have to give it the fact that unless they tread new ground they could only get more and more monotonous and generic with their sound. most older bands who have lasted over 30 years owe their staying power to yes maintaing the fact that the original talent stayed with the band over the years but because they owe their fans to their staying trying to find new material while staying black and white and true to their you could say original identity could really be the death of these bands. in this age there is more to these bands disposal so it may be a good idea to keep experimenting rather than rehashing sound to cater to older fans and really look at finding a bigger dynamic to a more exprienced and polished talent and prowess. being fresh doesnt mean trying to stay relevant but really making sure we still love and listen to these legendary bands

I love Meshuggah, but I'm going to slightly agree with CKN on this one. If Meshuggah would've stayed focused on the riffs and song writing instead of trying to bottom their sound out with 20 string guitars I think they'd easily be the best band in metal today. I can just imagine Nothing with DEI sound and production and I think it would sound better.

Pantera, I feel should be on here. I love Pantera, their music is amazing and they are one of my favourite bands, but I'm talking about the fans that only really acknowledge the existence of Cowboys From Hell and later albums, not really taking into account the older glam-style albums. You don't have to like those albums, to be sure, but to completely disregard their existence is to disregard half of the band's history.

In my opinion, with nearly every band in the metal genre, you should dismiss anything past their 4th or 5th album. The inspiration of youth is typically gone at that point. This is particularly true with bands that have risen to some fame or fortune. Metallica is a perfect example. By their 4th release ( ' Justice), they've pretty much exhausted their creative reserve. The primary inspiration for metal is pain and anger, plus , a little bit of ignorance. The simple act of growing older and wiser handicaps the process that serves the young and dumb. It happens to everyone. When you start listening to metal for nostalgia, you're there.Having said that, Death Magnetic was pretty good.

I'm confused. Slayer was #1 but not Pantera. Pantera was able to avoid being included on a list about metal bands being overrated because it made #1 on the billboard. Which garnered respect from the metal fans? Doesn't that go against what Metal was and has always been about? I love Pantera and appreciate Cowboys/Vulgar and everything after. But I can't give credit to a band for being pioneers to a genre when their first 4 albums were glam. Pantera definitely hold the crown for most overrated band.

+Mr Maws But Motörhead isn't repetitive. Almost every album have a different feeling to them, and the different Motörhead "eras" have a clearly different sound. For instance albums like Inferno and sacrifice are clearly heavy metal albums, while all of the earlier albums (and a lot of the later albums too) are closer to classic hard rock. Some of the albumseven have a blues sound to them. Unlike AC/DC who have recycled back in black for over 30 years now.
They've also done a lot of experimental songs: songs like Don't let daddy kiss me (Such a well written and sad song) one more fucking time, whorehouse blues and a shitton more. They definitely can do more than hard rock!
Also the one thing that puts them above AC/DC is the lyrics. Lemmy writes absolutely amazing songs. Sure, a lot of the songs like killed by death are clearly very simple and rock 'n' roll, but songs like the already mentioned Don't let daddy kiss me has beautiful and sad lyrics that tell a very tragic story, or songs like I am the sword which reminds me of fantasy epics like lord of the rings, or stay clean, which tells you to not always worry about what other people might think of you and live by your own rules. I could go on and on because so many Motörhead songs have amazing and deep lyrics. Unlike AC/DC, who can only write very simple "Let's play rock and party!" type songs.
The actual definition of 'overrated' is when something has received more positive attention than it deserves. The fans are a pretty integral part of that process.
Pantera should be on the list. I'm a huge Pantera fan, but I have to admit they don't deserve that much of respect and recognition. First, they started as a Glam band and also, their Groove releases kind of sound like a Metalcore prototype, with those screams and cleans. The best example is Cemetery Gates.
I can strongly agree with the examples of how fans can be, but it almost sounds like an attack on a band for something they truly can't control. Especially for Metallica I can't agree that they deserve less credit than they are given. I love all 8 of their albums so far and think on account of the last four they are given too little credit. They were practically the kings of thrash (slayer definitely up there too for the more hardcore, less progressive side) and the inventors. So they could have recycled their sound partially and I wouldn't blame them if they innovated half as much as they did album to album. And yet they went against the wishes of the fans to express themselves as musicians. The black alum did technically come out right as thrash lost popularity due to the upcoming of grunge, but overall they seemed to be chasing a less popular sound at every turn. And they were given hate every single time and called sellouts by "true fans". It is because they never sold out despite the large taste they got of popularity that I think they, if anything, are underrated, especially for a pioneering metal band who innovated so much, had such amazing talent, and went through many personal struggles. Now calling them underrated does sound ridiculous for having literally the largest fanbase of any metal band, but metal itself really is underrated and so being pretty much every metal band who gives a shit about music.
I'm going to get decapitated for saying this, but Black Sabbath is overrated. Don't get me wrong, I love Black Sabbath, but there are way too many people who just see them as the undeniable greatest metal band of all time, just because they were the first one. I think there are bands whose music is better, but their fans just seem to give them too much credit for their importancy and legacy, and always seeing them listed as the best metal band, Ozzy as the best metal frontman and Tony Iommi as the best metal guitarist is imo taking it too far. I think they are some of the greatest metal musicians of all time, just nit the undesputable best.

Ive always been a huge NuMetal fan, and for that ive gotten alot of flack from so called "real metal fans" whatever that means. That being said im kinda shocked to hear you say you enjoyed Slipknots first album over all their others because to me it was their only album that was really driven by the style of NuMetal, whereas the albums that followed seemed to me atleast to have a more traditional metal sound with less record scratching and the complete disappearance of corey rapping/skatting in more favor of soundscaping and traditional metal vocals. Perhaps that was the reason you put that album over the others because the sound was so ground breaking for the genre.

But far too many people just say this to fit in, or just for the sake of it. Half the people these days who praise Floyd know like 2 of their songs, as you said.

Brandon Tadday Slipknot isn't really a bad band. I understand that people don't like masked bands, I'm not a fan of these bands too, but their music is really good. It isn't the same as thrash metal or death metal (generally more technical kinds of metal), but it's sounds really interesting. Simpler music isn't always a bad music. I want to even say that it's a paradoxically, underrated band. A lot of teens, who don't know much about metal, say they are good, but a usual metalhead almost always say they are shitty.
It's a only thing which with I can't agree, even I tried to understand that before. Nu metal isn't my favorite kind of metal (it is still metal for me), even I don't like it, but I have that one expection.

Honestly, to list the overrated metal bands of the 20th century just basically think of all the bands that still continue to have a huge fanbase from Heavy Metal, NWOBHM, Thrash, Death, and Groove but heck its far beyond just ten...but that's basically all you have to think about, so you have your Maiden, Metallica, Slayer, Cannibal Corpse, Pantera, Venom, Slipknot, Avenged Sevenfold, and all the others I can't think of..but in reality don't you kind of think they should deserve all that praise?...maybe not Metallica at some points in time, and yes others really do take it too far, im guilty of that when it comes to Iron Maiden but still we all still listen to them like if its our first time hearing them.......but hey it's still better than these shitty "scene" or "core" or whatever the fuck my generation listens to now.....so who cares? Maiden got better in the later years ! The guitar work got even better after 2000, especially with Adrian Smith. They got much more progressive, and if you ask me, it's for the best !
