Song of the South | Things Disney Wants You To Forget

  • Disney’s 1946 film Song of the South was the studio’s first major feature to be shot predominantly in live-action. Focusing on the stories of Uncle Remus, an ex-slave working on a plantation in the Southern US during the reconstruction era - the movie was almost immediately met with backlash upon release. The movie’s depiction of African Americans and the Reconstruction Era came under criticism for being ‘racist,’ and despite a handful of theatrical re-releases, Disney has never released the movie on home media in the USA. While it has seen various international releases - it hasn’t been available on any market for over 20 years. Disney has refused on multiple occasions to re-release the movie physically, or digitally, for any reason - and most recently, the company has made moves to re-theme classic Disneyland ride Splash Mountain, based on the movie’s animated sequences.

I feel like Song Of The South should be a important conversation for people to have about the history of depictions of african-americans in movies. I feel like something like this should be made into a documentary because it's history and controversy.

Though I have doubts that any footage remains from the behind the scenes filming and day to day work of the film it would be incredible to see what it looked like. But due to Disney and certain others that are dumb and think the film and stories are racist for some unfathomable reason I don’t think we are likely to get anything deeper on it for a long time and with Splash Mountain being changed into something else well Disney is certainly trying to bury it like a corpse at Lake Mead.

The thing about it is all of these perceptions are merely the projections of a modern audience on a film based on a time period that no one alive today has any memory of.
The entire intention of the film was to be as a work arguing against prejudice while arguing that someone not of a particular cultural group can still come to enjoy the cultural works of other groups. The entire basis for the film - The Tales of Uncle Remus - is based entirely on this premise of mutual understanding and finding cultural value in stories that aren’t of your own cultural identity because the author of the book - Joel Chandler Harris - had grown up listening to some of the slave folk tales, even though he wasn’t a slave himself. He came to admire them and wanted to show these stories to a wider audience that could appreciate them just as he had.
In a twist of Irony, the censorship of “Song of the South” is the exact mentality that leads to the isolation and destruction of a cultural heritage. The declaration of the film as “taboo” smothers the cultural traditions the film is rooted within and, thus, smothers the cultural heritage of the group it seeks to appease. It’s a form of tragedy, especially considering the importance these stories have for the wider, southern culture; both black and white.

I watched this the other day on TH-cam. It was seriously one of the most pure, and beautiful historical movies I've ever seen. I felt that it was very kind to both of the races, even if there were some things that could be taken offensively to some. But to be honest, that's probably how it really was back then and they didn't have the views that we do now. But I felt that it was such a good representation of what it was like to be a child in that time. It was a beautiful story of accepting others and being truly kind to everyone, no matter what their skin color.
Hate me if you want, but I will stand by the idea that it's a wonderfully pure, historical movie that actually is pretty accurate to how it probably was back then which is more than we can say about modern movies that are made with only bits and pieces of what it might've been like. I absolutely loved it and think that it does not deserve the shame that it has received.

If you're going to make this a series, Disney's projects they want you to forget, might I suggest "The Wuzzles?" It was one of Disney's first animated TV series, so you'd think it would be a big deal to them, but no. In fact, seems like they've gone to great trouble distancing themselves from it ever existing, minus rerunning the series in the late 90's on Toon Disney (but on early mornings on the weekend, so maybe filler programming). Even the new Ducktales series seems to have been given guidelines on referencing it, making the characters more animalistic mutant hybrids, and not even referring to them by name. Maybe they're embarrassed that it was a short lived fad everyone seemed to forget. But the thing isn't even available on Disney +. Gummi Bears is, and retro Gummi Bear merchandise has been produced, by comparison.

You are wrong. The movie, as shown in this video, was heavily controversial ON release in 1946. The premiere was picketed, and there were numerous demonstrations and protests surrounding the film’s release. The NAACP even spoke against the movie.
Given that you are one to use the phrase “LGBTQ crap”, I can tell exactly what political line you stand on, and why you can’t see blatant and inherent racism within the movie. The movie does not AIM to be offensive, but it was part of a much larger issue rampant in Hollywood at the time. Either that, or you’ve never actually watched the movie and are blindly following this “anti-woke” narrative pushed by your ilk. I agree, the movie should be available for all to watch and study and learn from and it’s a shame this work of cinematic history has been somewhat buried… it is, however, not “cancelled” as you claim.
Also, James Baskett was NOT the first Black actor to be cast in a leading role. (If you cared enough about Black history in cinema, you would capitalize the B - Black is a people, black is a color.)
Sam Lucas was, in fact, the first ever Black actor cast in a lead role, for “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” in 1914!! A whole 35 years BEFORE “Song of the South.” Stepin Fetchit, however, is commonly considered the first Black “Movie Star”, rising to prominence in the middle-20s! There was likewise, an entire African American cinema movement beginning around 1915 that was highly popular.
James Basket was the first Black male performer to win an Oscar - HOWEVER, this was only an HONORARY award, not a competitive award. And it was only awarded to him THE YEAR AFTER the film was eligible for competition because Walt Disney and film journalist Hedda Hopper pushed back on the Academy HARD for not recognizing him in the first place.
If you are soooo passionate about this. Put in the effort to do some surface level research instead of regurgitating the classic right-wing buzz-words.

And no this movie is not racist- does it stereotype? Yes, all characters are stereotypes in classic Disney and that is kinda the charm of it. We could poke a little fun at each other without malice. Uncle Remus, an old man living in the reconstruction, is warm and inviting. He is wise and kind with no vengeance or bitterness in his heart. He is the "hero" of this story. • @DaveLeeDownUnder
      @DaveLeeDownUnder  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

No not at all. And yes it was.
“Criticism in the black press, however, was more politically divided. Richard B. Dier in The Afro-American was "thoroughly disgusted" by the film for being "as vicious a piece of propaganda for white supremacy as Hollywood ever produced." Herman Hill in The Pittsburgh Courier felt that Song of the South would "prove of inestimable goodwill in the furthering of interracial relations", and considered criticisms of the film to be "unadulterated hogwash symptomatic of the unfortunate racial neurosis that seems to be gripping so many of our humorless brethren these days."”
Also, Disney having not released the movie in the US on home media EVER, shows that there has at least been some widespread criticism of the film for more than 30 years. 20 years without any kind of physical release whatsoever? Yeah… ok… these “minor grievances” all came in “recent years.”

White supremacy is a term used by Marxist ideologues, of which the critic and journalist class is heavily skewed. Still, the vast majority of critics at the time would have been unphased by the movie, and the public likewise. The exception, a few Black activists, doesn't prove the rule.
Also, do some research? Haha you copy and pasted from Wikipedia. Low effort, not impressed. Further, wikikipedia is a website captured by leftist moderators; the small minority of grievance activists I mentioned in my first comment. Between the n3gro haters and the n3gro lovers there are many chances (for this project) to run afoul… all the way from the nasty to the controversial.” This was being said behind the scenes EVEN BEFORE the film was complete! Not to mention NAACP protests at film showings throughout the country in the 1940s AND the ultimate shame that the actor who played Uncle Remus (“a jolly ex-slav3” and depicted a freedman) couldn’t even attend the ATLANTA PREMIERE of the FILM due to Jim Crow laws in the South at the time which separated the races, and Disney did that to appease white Southern segregationists, and later he won an Academy Award!!

Sunflower was a hundred times worse and yet it got a censored rerelease? Tbh, I didn't find any scene in the movie as "racist" as the Native American scene in Peter Pan and I personally saw this movie as the start of a new more progressive era for Disney, because racism was still prevalent during the time period this movie was released. Was this movie a bit misguided at times? Yes, but these "problematic" scenes can easily be censored (the scenes that I could see as the most racist in the movie were when the grandmother had the black people bring the heavy objects in the house and "take care of the boy" [but we can see later on that she doesn't actually look down on them] and in the ending scene where the black kid fell over once while the white kids didn't). Some of the scenes also show the beauty of African American culture, like the old blues songs that the black community sing together as a group at certain points in the live action segments. Overall, I think this movie can easily be modified to be "politically correct" for more modern audiences. Hopefully this explains why some people find the movie racist and why others don't
