- The Audi Q8 is one of those large coupe-style SUVs, part of a genre pioneered by BMW a decade ago with their X6 and subsequently copied by Mercedes. Audi's considered solution for fashion-orientated folk browsing in this segment is Q7-based and very Vorsprung durch technic.
Background
The Volkswagen Group's MLB Evo platform has certainly spawned lots of luxury SUVs. First, we had the Audi Q7, then the Bentley Bentayga, the Porsche Cayenne, the Volkswagen Touareg, the Lamborghini Urus and now we've come back full circle to a derivative of the Q7, this swoopier Q8.
You can see why Audi wants a slice of the large sector SUV-coupe market. BMW has, after all, shifted over half a million X6s since that car pioneered the genre a decade ago. This one rolls off the same Slovakian Bratislava line as the Q7, the Cayenne and the Touareg and shares the same wheelbase and cabin width as its large Audi stablemate. The driveway demeanour though, is very different here, the emphasis on fashion, rather than family. It's pointless asking whether we really need this kind of car. People want them. Audi's made one. Is it any good? Let's find out.
Driving Experience
The Q8's primary engine is the '50 TDI' 3.0-litre diesel unit we're familiar with from the A7 Sportback and the A8. Most will go for this unit in 286PS form, but you can also talk to your dealer about a lesser version of this powerplant with 231PS (the Q8 '45 TDI'). A 3.0 TFSI petrol-engined variant with 340PS (the Q8 '55 TFSI') is also being made available and Audi is also developing a top RS Q8 flagship version. We'll focus on the '50 TDI' 286PS derivative because most customers will. This puts out a hefty 600Nm of pulling power and accelerates this large SUV from 0 to 62mph in 6.3 seconds on its way to a top speed of 144mph. Your transmission will be an 8-speed Tiptronic auto. And of course there's standard quattro 4WD, which divides torque front-to-rear in a 40:60-split. When required, it transfers the majority of power to the axle with the better traction.
Adaptive air suspension with controlled damping is a standard feature, with a sport set-up. This further improvers the supple ride you can expect from the aluminium five-link front and rear suspension. It can be adjusted to four modes with the Audi drive select dynamic handling system, varying the ride height of the body by up to 90mm. Q8 buyers also get standard 'progressive steering' which becomes increasingly direct as the steering angle increases.

These OSV reviews are superb, so long as you have the time to view them. Detailed, authoritative, but never boring. The one feature that this car has over its rivals is a rear wiper, something the others don't even offer as an option. It doesn't matter how many clever reversing aids are fitted, reversing out of a busy supermarket or motorway services parking slot in heavy rain without a rear wiper has the potential for a crunch. The best anti-collision device in any car is the Mark 1 eyeball.

Owning an Audi Q8 coming from a Range Rover L405 sdv8 after a Porsche cayenne turbo what a magical concoction.

The best review of Q8 yet! I have a US spec Q8 prestige year one edition Orca Black wither the black out package! Unfortunately we don’t have some of the option you have across the pond! Can’t wait for my RSQ8 next year. Have owned this one for 18 months and have enjoyed every mile driven! Have purchased two more Audi’s since 2019 e-tron Quattro and an A5 quattro cabrio

The Q8 is WAY quieter than the video seems to show/implies! The quietest SUV I have ever driven!! It is probably quieter than my Jaguar VDP!

Have Audi stopped using the AW automatic transmission in this chassis in combination with the diesel engine? That is news to me if it is indeed the case. The Q7 and Touareg V6 diesels have always used Aisin Warner until, apparently, now. Please check which transmission they do actually use.

Great overall and detailed review. In my view, this is a better option than the X6, Range Rover Sport, and neck and neck with the GLE coupe. Have to wait and see the new GLE coupe to see. I'm surprised it has less cargo space than the GLE.. I love the tech in it as well. This should look awesome fully blacked out. What I'm really waiting to see. Is. The RSQ8 version. Now that, should be a BEAST and I would definitly purchase if I had the money.
The RSQ8 would be a welcome alternative to those who don't want a Lamborghini Urus nor the Bentayga.
Unfortunately, the Diesel version not available in USA. Americans get stuck with 19 MPG (combined), 5.6 zero to sixty, 130 MPH instead of the Diesel version wtih 36MPG (combined), 5.0 (0 to 60) and 155 MPH....and the USA version requires premium gas- 50 cents/ gallon more than Diesel.

Thank you for a detailed if a little too long review with some repetition. It should be cut into 3 shorter videos. That said, I had an extended test drive of the petrol version and I liked it a lot. The drive was positive and relaxed. Having had 3 previous models I am waiting for my Hybrid to be delivered in the next few weeks. I have been waiting for this alternative drive vehicle for several years. I loved the 1.6 diesel but can see the writing on the wall. My only criticisms of this model are the tiny cluttered button setup on the steering wheel and the too small Connect map display screen. The steering wheel buttons are made of glossy plastic and are too small. Honda has lost any sense of ergonomic design and feel for these important controls. However, the overall build quality and standard sensor pack is what sold me.

Good informed technical content....but it’s far to long for a review.....25-30 minutes surly, I can’t set aside 60 minutes or tend to lose inas it becomes repetitive, , am aware they do a shorter feature option on most reviews but that’s to brief...but this is just my opinion
I have to agree with you on this, but if I had the wealth (which I haven't got unfortunately) to buy a new, expensive luxury car, I would watch the entire 60+ mins to get a thorough review of the car that I was thinking of buying on this channel. Yes, the reviews are long, but they are very extensive and detailed. Even if I were rich, I would want to know what I would be buying. For that reason this channel is good.
I don't get how an SUV or an SAV, in BMW terms, can come without roof rails and most of them do. These cars are built for people to show off the status when driving to a gym or to Tesco for weekly groceries shopping rather then for functionality. How do I carry my sport equipment in the Sports Activity Vehicle without roof rails??? It's ridiculous.

Way too much glass black and a severe lack of buttons. The Cayenne has the perfect mix and it’s a plugin hybrid too.
Do you know whats the fuel consumption when you drive longer trips with the cayenne? I could guess its pretty high?
I just looked at a Cayenne - you are talking about the S E-hybrid? Beautiful car and way faster than the Q8 but it is probably $40k more than a similarly equipped Q8. Even the base cayenne is around $20k CAD more than a Q8. I really didn't like the plastic dash on the Cayenne but I agree overall shape is much better.
Also, the new Cayenne dash is exactly the same configuration as the Q7/Q8

The Q8 is quite a large vehicle.
Truth be told, I miss the days of speedometer and tach and not so much crap in the instrument cluster. I know I know, I can still have it, and the lack of mechanical dials are easier(?) to maintain. I enjoy my 2013 A6 for that reason.
I have a 66 Buick I can sell you, since you like old school gauges so much.
