- When the head of Canada's most extreme airline, Buffalo airways, is suspended from flying a large number of flights are in danger of being cancelled. The Buffalo crew have to rapidly train and educate a new cohort of young pilots to fly in some of the worst conditions possible in planes that are decades old.

Buffalo Airways is an airline based in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada. They mainly fly WWII-era piston powered propeller planes in minus 40 degrees and land on tiny strips of tarmac in the tundra.

Am I the only one going to note that this episode was posted a couple months ago? Someone mentioned on that one that it was the wrong one. Checking the playlist, they are right. There is an episode missing for the water bomber flight to the Azores and Jeremy flying a DC-4.

Earnie was my favourite on the show he always taught the boys a lesson on flying and was never heated when they messed up abit
Before I moved back to Australia, in the late 90’s my after high school job was at a local packing store in Salt Lake City making custom boxes out of sheets of cardboard.
Had the opportunity to custom crate the Stanley and Turner cups after the local team (SL Goldeneagles now Utah Grizzlies) won the Turner. Both cups were going on tour before Turner heading to the engraver and back to its new home. Cool experience.
Had a smile on my face the whole time.
Buffalo Joe is like my wife when I am driving. I have years of experience, even driving big rigs for a while yet she persists in being like Joe! She really gets on my nerves! I just can't imagine how these young pilots feel with Buffalo Joe breathing down their necks criticizing every nuance of something he doesn't like!

My father, having spent a great deal of time in Alaska while in the Navy often had to get from one base to another much faster than a ship could take him. He was always reluctant to fly in anything but the DC-3 mainly because he had had issues that often lead to having to go down nowhere near where he was supposed to land if flown out in nay other aircraft, even ones much newer than the DC-3. He always told us that if we had to fly in Alaska winter weather, although he did not advise its, to not do it if they were not flying a DC-3. They are not kidding when they say that the DC-3 has quite the impeccable record in the north, that craft was built, it seems to love ice, cold and bad weather

Sorry Mikey, but Buffalo is not the "only" airline that flies DC-3s schedule flights in the world. In Colombia SA, there is a city with more DC-3s than any other country in the world, with scheduled flights to places without any roads, in the jungle.

The problem is NOT that they're too green or the airplane is difficult to fly. The problem comes down to deficient TRAINING. That falls on Buffalo's head, not the two inadequately trained guys dropped in the hot seat on short notice.

It would have been really cool if that was the real Stanley Cup, but it wasn't. That was what is called the "Presentation Cup", which was made in 1963. In 1962, the Toronto Maple Leafs won the Stanley Cup. During a party after the win, the trophy was dropped in a bonfire and badly damaged. It was repaired at the expense of the team.
In 1964, Red Kelly of the Toronto Maple Leafs posed for a photo with his infant son sitting in the Cup, only to find the child had urinated in it. Kelly was quoted years later as saying it has always since made him laugh to see players drinking out of the Cup.
In 1970, after much wear and tear, the Cup was fully replaced with a duplicate known as the "Presentation Cup" made in 1963 and a second duplicate called the "Permanent Cup", which remains at the Hockey Hall of Fame. From this point on, in official functions and player days with the Cup, it is the Presentation Cup that is in circulation. So, the cup is actually YOUNGER than the plane it is on. Nobody's held the real cup since the 70s.
Transport Canada sounds like a bureaucratic nightmare.
Joe's a dinosaur who won't move aside and allow the younger generations to gain experience in flying "his" airplanes. Heck, he even hires new pilots and makes them RAMPIES! Was an utter waste of precious talent! You hire rampies to PREP the planes, and you hire pilots to FLY the planes! It's one thing as a pilot to familiarise yourself with the aircraft, but you don't deny a pilot the opportunity to do the job they were originally trained to do!
I agree, but you have to remember, these videos are at least 10 to 12 years old.
And probably scripted to add excitement to each show.
He also needs to accept he is not perfect as he expects new pilots to be; after all, he is the one who earned a very justified suspension.
ya I think he does that to find the determined ones that will grind it out and to build character so they don't think everything is just handed to you... but I am sure they have been through a lot to get there license and pay for it....

Honestly, Joe is simply on a power trip. Worst thing you can do to a person is interrupting during the job. He should have given them a briefing and tell them what Is important when flying the DC3. Ridiculous, terrible leadership.
If it was my responsibility to make sure everyone lives, i would be the same way. If something happened to this plane, it's not that easy to replace. I personally would not get on a plane with a 25 year old as the captain, not enough hour's. You know how the guy is when you go to train or work for joe, and the training you won't get anywhere else. God bless.
@@died4us590 The replacement is a qualified captain. Important word is QUALIFIED. Certified and tested to the necessary level and knowledge to do the job. Joe being there breathing down their necks only adds the pressure and takes their attention away from the job. The guy's ego is the largest problem the company has.
Also him constantly interrupting violates the “sterile cockpit” rule if he interrupted at any point below 10,000 feet.
I wonder how well cars hold up under conditions like that ...
As a truck driver, it's iligal too stress the pilot out and crew .

I would think......A suspended captain grabbing at and adjusting the controls of a plane while its taking off... without the knowledge or permission of the actual Captain or co pilot who are in control at this CRITICAL TIME ...IS GROUNDS FOR A LENGTHY ...IF NOT PERMANENT REVOCATION of piloting duties ... this was no training flight or emergency situation .... THERE WERE SOULS AT STAKE! .....Boxes home for Everyone if it went bad.... maybe its time for old Joe to hang up the wings.... seems he is unsafe in his stubbornness

Reality TV shows tend to assume that their viewers have goldfish memories and need to be reminded of plot points every few minutes. If you took one of these 50-minute episodes and removed all the repeated footage, you'd be doing well to have 20 minutes of original footage left.
They should have had Sophie christen that trophy appropriately, by marking her spot on it. You're a nation.

He is a horrible boss and pilot manager. If you can't trust people, don't put them in charge. If there's no one you can trust within your organisation, then you have failed as a manager and as a trainer.

Illegally flying is a federal offence, and theres no way hes getting off a tarmac without reporting to airport authority.

The dumbest part of this was the stanley cup, and kissing and rubbing it up. I hate sport's, can't sit through how boring it is. One thing to play sport's, but as a kid in the country with only 3 channels, being tortured to watch sport's, as well as being the remote to change channel's as a kid was to much lol. God bless.
