This is one of first bands in decades, that I listen to almost daily. I'm 60 yrs old and heard a lot of bands.
They have many, many great songs. I have 2 of their CDs currently. I have never bought any non-english
language albums in my life, but the music is so good it is not a factor. They do use some English phrases in choruses however. The language here is authentic Rock n Roll.

I just discovered Asterism Rising Moon (th-cam.com/video/IfxMi0Bx4x0/w-d-xo.html), TEENAGERS who sound better than 90% of the stuff on YT. Haruka, the female shredder was 15 when they made the video. She has a real Hendrix/Santana attitude and is just wicked good, no vocals so you get to hear how good her band-mates are as well. A real fusion of Metal, Hard Rock and Jazz, just amazing what is coming out of Japan these days! This band will be heard from in the coming year. Kids still in high school and not able to drive yet are crushing the music world!!

"Is this their best song?" They quite literally don't have a bad song. I'm dead serious. They're just that good, and their personalities as individuals and as a group are just so much fun. Suggestions: Play (live version), Domination, Choose Me, Don't You Tell Me (MV or live), Take Me Higher (live version), Daydreaming (power ballad), Bubble (their latest), Glory (came right before Bubble), or pretty much anything else they've done.

  • @MrTdg2112
    @MrTdg2112 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

My all time favorite band. And I only found them 4 or 5 months ago. First iTunes purchase EVER. Made within hours of viewing them for the first time. I've played drums since the 80s and the drummer is the first drummer in decades to inspire me to go back and practice new stuff. You mention the changes, its ALL the rhythm section: Akane and Misa. Akane (the drummer) never stops moving the groove. Just in one section she will move it at least twice. At the same time they support the Kanami and the melody perfectly. I'm pretty sure the 3 of them have all graduated from prestiges music schools.
The thing about the vocals is there really is no need to understand what they are singing about. They slip in some English lyrics here and there that keeps it alive for non-Japanese speakers just fine. It illustrates the fact that most people never even listen to what the words are to the song except for key phrases in the chorus. So they can easily get away with it. Check the live version of "Play" for probably the best example of this.
Best song?! LOL! Their best song is whichever you happen to have playing at the time you are listening to them. Seriously! There are NO bad songs. I cannot think of one other band that I can say this of. Dice is my recommended starting point. Next one would be the live version of "Take Me Higher." Perhaps the live version of "Play." If you insist on reacting to everything the first time you listen to them, start recording as fast as you can. You are missing out until you grant yourself the freedom to buy the albums and just start enjoying the music.
Next, after you've exhausted yourself on Band-Maid, check out Asterism- "Rising Moon." They're just kids, but the guitarist will melt your face. (important mention is Li-Sa-X, even younger and at least as amazing)
Others to check out: Aldious, Bridear, Doll$Boxx, Maximum the Hormone (Band-Maid drummer's inspiration for playing drums- although MtH may be best taken in small doses (th-cam.com/video/MmfUyyUL07A/w-d-xo.html)), Wagakki Band
The Japanese are absolutely killing it on the Metal/Hard Rock/Classic Rock scene (look up Glim Spanky "Move Over" for an amazing better than the original cover) and damn, if these bands aren't just dominated by amazingly musically talented women! (I mean, the drummer for Aldious is the daughter of Terry Bozio for crying out loud!)
Wait, you haven't done Babymetal yet? Not a big deal, but if you do a reaction start with Gimme Chocolate. It makes for the best reaction videos. Their other stuff is arguably better, but Gimme Chocolate gets the most laughs/views. You'll understand when you see it (Babymetal has pretty well broken through in the West, and if you watch their stuff on TH-cam Band-Maid inevitbly pops up, making them the gateway for Westerners to find and discover there is SO much more to J-Metal/Rock)

Aww, that was fun! I love seeing new people learn about Band-Maid. "Dice" is the best intro song. "Thrill" is an earlier song and they've really grown since that one, but it put them on the map. I was introduced through "Choose Me" but when I send links to people, I find the 2 hour Live video of their World Domination Tour final at Zepp Tokyo, starting at the 30:55 mark, then say, "Listen to 2 songs" because they kinda go from one right into the other and the bits are really good, a lot of variations, everyone has some shine moments . . . so that's my recommend! But that whole 2 hour concert is pretty amazing. Loved the video!

Dice is a nice solid jab, from them to get your attention there big punches then really do pack a wallop. So Band Maid formed in 2013 by Miku Kobato (Vocals, Rhytm Guitar, Lyricist and 810 year old Small pigeon, possibly a little mad) she had been in a failed idol group called lil cumin and was working in a maid cafe in Toyko where she travellingto and from work was listening to heavy metal and rock and thought i want to do this but in maid costumes.
She found Lead Guitarist Kanami Tono from a cover she had done on a video site and recruited her, Kanami was playing in an acoustic band with Drummer Akane Hirose, Miku asked her if she knew anyone else who would be good for the band and Kanami suggested Akane.
Akane liked the musical ideas and sort of liked the idea of the costumes and when she was asked about other musicians suggested MISA who she had been at music school with.
Miku decided that her voice was not strong enough for the type of Music and she knew Saiki Atsumi from the talent agency she was associated with where she was doing solo and backing singing and dancing. She also knew if she told her about the costumes she probably wouldn't join so instead said would be heavy music in cute clothes. Saiki like the music and grudgingly put up with the costume for about two songs.
The band suggested to fill out there sound that Miku learn to play guitar (which for a couple of years she did not enjoy though that has changed) and Kanami has been teaching her to the point where she is an essential part of there sound
Other songs to listen to, they are an amazing live band having played all over the world, basically anywhere they could plug in.
    Puzzle live
Dont you tell me from Zepp Toyko
    Moratorium live
    Awkward live
    Choose me
    Take me higher live
    Onset (instrumental)
Sorry for the essay but they are not the easiest band to explain, they variously like Drinking, Anime, books, coffe, latte art, pubg, Dirty Jokes, Model Trains, sharks, sneakers, porn and slapping each others backsides.

Lovebites is a very good band, but it's classic metal rock, both in terms of sound and instrumentalization. Band Maid is a hard rock with elements of pop, and even funky, but all the time experimenting with sound and very rich arrangements. And probably has one of the best (I'm not exaggerating) rhythm section in the rock world. I recommend from older songs "Secret my Lips" and "YOLO", and from the latest ones "Bubble".

I am a total LOVEBITES fan as well🤟… Both they and BAND-MAID are my two go-to musical groups; neither of them has a bad song or a weak link (although LOVEBITES are on hiatus now: Miho, the founder of LOVEBITES - along with Haruna - has left the band,”; Asami (Vox) and Miyako (Dark-hair guitar goddess) both got married recently (and Miyako had her first baby…) so the hiatus is understandable: I have no doubt they’ll be back, tho’!
Band-Maid are carrying the torch for the new vanguard of Rock music, and you are correct - MISA 😼and AKANE😺are the best backline in Rock music currently!!

Band Maid is the brainchild of Miku Kobato and exists solely due to her indomitable force of will. She was a waitress in a maid cafe, singing songs to people’s food “to make it more delicious” as she puts it, for several years then decided she wanted to make a heavy rock band that would surprise people. After she had the people in place, then she had her guitarist teach her to play guitar! It was only 6 months before they had a contract and were in the studio recording and playing shows. I’m subscribing because I like you two. Kay, you seem to have your head on straight and Jay, you’re obviously doing an admirable job as a father. Follow this up with the excellent Band Maid suggestions these good people are giving. 💪🏻🤘🏻

  • @fastskipper777
    @fastskipper777 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I am writing this to separate my comments from prior. Lovebites is a metal band. Band Maid is a hard rock band. All five members are insanely talented. My favourite is Band Maid.
Miku Kobato (pony tails, rhythm guitar, backup vocal) - most talkative member, a little pigeon
Kanami Tono (lead guitar) - studious and nice girl - reads books
Akane Hirose (drums) - most organized - cheerful
Misa (bass) - doesn't talk - likes drinking whisky
Saiki Atsumi (lead vocal) - cool and distant.
Miku worked at a maid cafe and dreamed about forming a rock band wearing maid dresses. She was a member of a three member Idol group (wasn't a successful group). Unknown idols don't make much money. And so she had to work part time at a maid cafe. Miku found Kanami online. Kanami is classically trained in piano (for 16 years) and guitar for 8 years. Kanami suggested Akane whom backed up Kanami time to time. Akane is also classically trained in piano since young and learned drums at school as well as trombone. Akane brought Misa along. Misa learned piano since age of 3. Akane and Misa are classmates from Tokyo School of Music, equivalent to Berkley School of Music in the States.
They started as a quartet with Miku as the singer but she realized her voice did not fit the music they were playing and they auditioned Saiki who at the time was also in the same management company. So, Saiki who is also youngest came to be the last member of Band Maid. Oh, and Kanami suggested (forced) Miku to start learning guitar. LOL. She is getting very good now. And she thinks she is a little pigeon. Yeah...
Miku is the bona-fide spokes person of the band, most comfortable and engaging on camera due to her idol days. She works really hard to market her band. Many give her a huge credit for her.
Miku is also the main lyricist. Miku may act all cutsy and all but she is really smart. Oh, and she likes horse racing. LOL
Kanami is the main music composer with Akane and Misa contributing on the rhythm sections.
Saiki helps Miku on the feels of the songs.
The MV "Thrill" was the breakout song that made them known through out the online world.

Lots of good musicians. Both male and female.
What i like With them is that they werent put together by the record Company, but the brain-child of Miku. Don't remember exactly how, but understood she knew the guitarist Kanami (?) from before, who knew the drummer, who knew the bassist.... Which tell a Whole deal about why they sound so tight.

Thank's for this lovely reaction, yes I did enjoy it a lot. Obvious two open minded music lovers (young and a bit older) with the sense and sensibility to let them surprise with new bands and sounds. Thumbs up Kay and Jay.
I have seen Band Maid 6 times now live, within the last 3 years. It's incredible how much they evolved within a short time. I'm a 55 years old Punk- and Metalhead and I have seen almost all the big guys in rock and I have to confess that Band Maid is one of the best things I saw live in the last decades. There are not many Bands out there who are so insanely good and tight and fun as well on stage. Misa and Akane are forming one of the best rythm sections in rock ever and Kanami delivers soul and agressivity at the same time in her solos. Technicaly they are all top notch (even Miku with perfect harmonising back up vocals and solid rhytm playing) and defentely one of the best, if not the best rock band out there. And beside that, these ladies are absolutely loveable as personalities and so free of ego driven posing. It's obvious that they truly love what they do and it's difficult not to fall in love with each member instantly.
Thrill is where the journey started for a biger audience. Even if it's a great grooving song i wouldn't continue with this one next. Go for Secret my lips, Order, Alone or Choose me as some of their best earlier songs avaiable on youtube or for Domination or Bubble from the new stuff, and from the live recordings you can choose whatever you want, each and every one is aweseome. I recomend Play, Turn me on or Don't you tell me with the awesome Bass & Guitar battle.
And if you like to give another kick ass all female rock band from Japan a chance, try BRIDEAR with G.A.M.E live th-cam.com/video/MiFZ_JWKVwE/w-d-xo.html or Scream live th-cam.com/video/Mwp8RKL9RyY/w-d-xo.html

As a 66 year old man from Sacramento this is the first rock band l have given a damn about since four guys from Liverpool called it quits back in 1970. Yeah. They are that damned good. A lot of English in this song if you listen closely. Viva Band-Maid. "Seize the moment." And "Winning or losing l'm playing again" are a couple of examples. Nice reaction. Lovebites is a metal band and Band-Maid is a hard rock and pop rock band. They are both great bands. Lovebites likes to sing in English while Band-Maid usually sings in Japanese with a few English phrases. They have one all English song "Don't Let Me Down". Their accents can make it a little hard to understand. "Thrill" was their 1st MV and is what put them on people's radar. Their early songs were composed by other people but starting with "Alone" they were allowed by their label to record their own songs. Kanami, the guitarist, writes the music and Miku (vocals/rhythm guitar) does the lyrics with some input from Saiki the lead singer "Dice" is one of the songs written by the band. You should also try "Daydreaming" and their acoustic Puzzle & Anemone with just Kanami and Saiki. That will give you some idea of their range.

DOMINATION! The volume on the official music video (all across TH-cam) is quieter. You should check out their live videos, the pro-recorded ones are phenomenal and they generally add a lot to each song like bass vs. guitar battles and such. Well done though you two, very well done. The future of real band music is in Japan and Bandmaid dominates

An all girl Japanese rock band that has awesome music! They mesh extremely well in everything I have heard from them! I was an instant fan as soon as I watched the Dice video! I think they have a very bright future in the business! I also think every single member of the band are total knock out beauties! So a bevy of Beauties with great talent and near perfect musical arrangement, and able to fit together better than most bands I have ever seen or known; what's not to love? I certainly love them!

I'm surprised that with your coverage of great metal bands that you have not yet covered the Japanese group Babymetal that created Kawaii Metal. These guys cross many genres of metal, with some other genres tossed into the mix. A good start would be' Road of Resistance' which is a Power/Speed Metal number which highlights the vocals, choreography, skills of the Kami band and the awesome audience. Epic.

Nice reaction, you two. I would suggest hearing their live concert versions with headsets on "stun". I noticed cmcknight1984 (below) gave a good rundown on the group. Here's my take with some add'l info:
Band-Maid is the hard rock Beatles of our time! Composition, Execution, Consistency, Uniqueness, Charisma and Charm. Oh yeah... and Cute as hell, IMHO. They are destine for mega-stardom. They're the only band in decades where I love nearly EVERY song they’ve done. I have over 50 favorites! "Thrill" is a great place to start. Their newer songs drive even more - Moratorium, Domination, Clang, Dice, Spirit, Fate, Secret My Lips, Puzzle, Glory, and on and on ! Each member's personalities are super interesting and their musicianship among the best. Their writing, arrangements and overall sound, especially guitar tones, are kick-ass! /

@@stimproid Having been in rock bands and recording for decades I appreciate not only their musicianship and composition, but how fast they have, especially Kanami, acquired a true rock sensibility and soul. Listen to Fate, for one of 50 examples. I mean, just listen to where Kanami was at during Mochi to Chizu days and then a few years later. Miku could barely play at all. None of them was even into heavy rock before Band-Maid. Yet, being slight (barely 100+ lbs.) young girls, became in just a few short years, one of the hardest-hitting rock bands in the world.
They can tour and shred with the best of them, and for hours. Just look at the typical macho male groups who would have you believe they must strain and suffer with agony and anger on every note and phrase… while the girls don’t even break a sweat! And they do it with grace and joy, some in high heels! I just think Band-Maid is a phenomena and I’m so grateful for their hard work and existence. I hope they stay together for dozen of albums and continue to change the face - and gender - of rock n’ roll.

P.s. when you check lyrics remember Japanese grammar is different. You will have to move the words around a little. Plus their vocabulary is smaller so words have more meanings. I.e. in English translation it'll say " don't say secret" but would mean more like " don't tell lies" Adverbs and adjectives in different spots. They have one song all in English. "Don't let me down "

    • @sacluvsBM
      @sacluvsBM 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@doobiejones9388 yes idiomaticly there are translation difficulties but they sing about 20% of their lyrics in English and Don't Let Me Down is entirely in English. I suspect you might see Miku's lyrics evolve over time to 80% English and 20% Japanese. In presentation and performance they are almost flawless. And l can tell you that Band-Maid is the first band l have cared this much about since four guys from Liverpool called it quits in 1970. Sacramento loves Band-Maid.

Sweet, you guys did Band Maid! I love these ladies. One of the best rock bands around today imo, very talented musicians and songwriters. You should check out some of their live stuff. They kick ass live. There are a LOT of songs as good as Dice but I'll recommend the song Play. But there is Alone, Domination, Choose Me, Don't You Tell Me and so many more. Thrill is also very good but is one of there very early songs and they have grown a lot as a band since then and have really refined their sound since that song. Really they seem to get better and better with every new album. The live version of Play really shows how good they are as a live band.

Thrill is the first song that made them decide to pursue the heavy rock avenue and is the one that started grabbing everyone's attention. Still a fun song to listen to, but you can tell it is just the beginning when compared to later songs like Dice. Yolo is another I would suggest, and they do have an all English song called Don't Let Me Down. Bit of warning though, the lyrics are rather on the risque side.
But yeah, welcome to the Band Maid family.

Miku ( the rhythm guitarist, backing vocals) used to work at a maid cafe and decided to make the band, she found Kanami (guitar)via internet search, Kanami suggested Akane (drums), Akane suggested Misa (bass) finally having Saiki(vocals) join from auditions last. They worked hard to the point they now and have for a long time write all their own music and lyrics, and continuously work hard for promotion and making new music
The band consists of: Miku "Lil Pigeon" Kobato (guitars/vocals) Saiki "Saichan" Atsumi(vocals), Misa "The Assassin" (bass), Kanami "Mincho" Tono(Guitar), Akane "Achi" Hirose (drums)
I suggest a live song for next reaction, maybe "Play" or "Puzzle"... just dont do "Secret Maiko Lips" (april fools parody) before "Secret My Lips" (original) even though you should check out both, just do the original first

Welcome to the Rabbit Hole that is Japanese rock. I suggest finding the live versions of as many of their songs as possible. With that said; the band members are: Miku Kobato (2nd vocals and guitar), Misa (Bass), Akane Hirose (Drums), Saiki (Lead Vocals), Kaname Tono (Lead Guitar)... All are masters of their craft as you have seen. with this band, if I had to pick a favorite, I would guess that would have to be Kaname... I just love to watch her shred.
If you haven't watched Wagaki Band yet; I strongly recommend them. They are a fusion band combining Traditional Japanese and Contemporary musical instruments. The band was formed by the lead singer (Yuko Suzuhanna); Beni Ninagawa, Shamisen (looks like a banjo, only has 3 strings, and is played with what looks like a putty knife, but isn't); Asa, Bass; Machiya, Guitar & 2nd vocals; Wasabi, Contemporary Drums; Kiyoshi Ibukuro, Koto (horizontal harp like thing); Kurona, Taiko drums; Daisuke Kaminaga, Shakuhachi (dubbed the Impossible Flute). I would recommend watching their performance of Homura followed immediately by Akatsuki-no-ito. Homura is an instrumental and leads seamlessly into Akatsuki-no-ito. Yuko, is a trained vocalist and her ability with Shigen style singing is nothing short of breath taking. These two songs are what drew me in. Note: Asa is a vocaloid producer and has been (and still is) involved in at least one other band. I couldn't take my eyes off of this amazing bassist.
    Enjoy!

Good reaction they are a great band. Japan has kept rock music moving forward while it's been all bit silenced on the North American scene (5000 bucks to make a hiphop record, 50000 to a million for a quality rock album). There are many good bands in Japan right now.
I think Babymetal would also be a good reaction (They have done well internationally since their appearance at Sonisphere 2014, good video by the way).
