How to Setup Your Helmet for Combat | Special Forces Technique | Tactical Rifleman

  • We got a few comments on our “How to set up your Body Armor” video, asking about the helmet I had in the videos and how we go about setting a helmet up.
    Simple: Don’t weigh it down with extra crap you don’t need. Keep it simple.
    NVDs: Ensure your mount is tight. There’s nothing worse than having your NODs flopping around. Also, a safety note, if your helmet does not have the correct hole pattern for your new NOD mount, do NOT just drill new holes. Drilling holes in the Kevlar cuts the strings that run in every direction and weakens the entire helmet. Rather, the correct method is to drive a punch through with a press. This will cut much fewer strands and maintain the integrity of the helmet.
    Lights: I’ve tried all the different helmet lights, but have found that I just prefer to use a Petzl headlamp, if extra light is needed.
    One thing I forgot to mention: You might have noticed the IR American Flags on both sides of the helmet. These are for identifying Friend or Foe (IFF). Think about it; if you turn to look out a window, the snipers will only see your head. The flags help them identify you as a friendly. We tried small squares of IR Glint Tape, but the flags work much better.

    Hey Karl, im a retired Soldier from the Argentinian Army, Infantry. Back in the boot camp we used to wear the M1 steel helmet and hell it was heavy and warm. So unconfortable to go around. When we acquired the CABAL 2 made of Kevlar they were amazing light weight, comfortable and better for aiming. Regards from Argentina, the ARG Army. Great videos keep it that way

    That battery pack is bad ass. Idk how many times my PVS 14 has died on me and I've had to stop and pull a AA battery from my pack. Only problem is that nearly all the gear we're issued uses different batteries. PEQ 16 uses 123's, PVS 14 uses AA's, and the red leans headlamps we mainly use have AAA's. You end up having to keep a waterproofing bag full of batteries in your pack with you at all times. The bungee cord on the front of your kevlar is also very smart. The elbow mount for the PVS 14 is notoriously loose and rattly.

    Worn gear is tricky to design since no two people have the same exact body build. This is especially true for helmets because the human head requires a lot of consideration: protection, mobility, weight, padding, accessory integration. Our heads are our information hubs. Most of our sensory cues are collected by our head (through sight, sound, smell, and taste) so it’s important to enable the use of these senses with the least amount of impairment brought on by protective gear. Comfort must be a high priority, because if your head is uncomfortable it’s hard to focus on anything else. And of course we need to integrate essential accessories. The modern battlefield is more advanced than the ones our fathers and grandfathers fought on. With new threats come new tactics. And with new tactics comes new gear to support them. As always, I search for a balance of combat effectiveness and comfort when assembling my gear. Every little piece gets interrogated before getting added: Will this widget help me be a more effective gunfighter? Does this item help support the three tenets of gunfighting-shoot, move, communicate?

    • @Samworfinder
      @Samworfinder 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My go-to helmet is an Ops-Core FAST SF. This is the latest/greatest entry in the storied FAST helmet line. I still have my original FAST Ballistic (from before they began calling it the FAST XP), covered in layers of spray paint. It’s on its fifth liner system since the previous ones got so used and crusty they began holding shape. Ops-Core was the original designed-from-the-ground-up special operations helmet. They started the trend of taking the helmet concept down to its core and designing something based completely around feedback from elite warriors. Other companies followed suit and we now have many great options from several manufacturers from which the warrior can choose. Over the years I wore Crye Precision Airframes, Team Wendy EXFILs, and MTEK FLUXs. All are solid options to be sure, but I kept coming back to Ops-Core.👍🏻

    What do you think about the set-ups that attach the peltors to the helmet?

    • @TacticalRifleman
      @TacticalRifleman  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Aaron B. I'm actually not a fan of them, as I like to take my helmet off and still wear my Peltors for comms and hearing protection.

      @HawkAnomaly 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TacticalRifleman if you were to get the opscore version of the peltors they can be rebuilt back into the regular wearing configuration. ie the head pad on the peltor is present again. costs about the same has one less wire to work with but its not a destroy the peltor to put on the helmet for this headset. Kinda neat to be honest.

    If your an operator at night then you need NVG, you need IR, so that your team can I'd you, you may need a flashlight and comms on the helmet as well..so what is so "flashy" about having the necessities on your helmet.

    How do you keep the enemy from picking up your IR strobe on their own night vision?

    • @TacticalRifleman
      @TacticalRifleman  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don’t. You usually wouldn’t turn it on in an area where the enemy has NVDs. However, you have to weigh the pros and cons. Sometimes, marking friendlies, outweighs the chance of an enemy seeing you.

      Also bring a hand-held light. You don't always need to be flagging with a light on a gun, just because you need a light.
