Oilers faithful here. The fact that we managed to do this with nearly 15 mil tied up in Nurse and Campbell combined is miraculous. Game 7 was such a devastating coin flip, the real lesson this team needs to take with them is how to play like demons à-la games 4-6, but in games 1-3 next year when they’re back. You can’t go down 3-0 and expect to win. Not the recipe for success. Amazing they pushed it to 7. Such a pendulum swinging series. More trust needs to be put in Holloway and Broberg. Nurse needs to get away this summer and collect himself mentally, and be ready for his best season yet. McDavid and Drai need to heal their wounds and they will obviously come back swinging next season. This experience was invaluable for Skinner. See how Kane fares post surgery and then we can decide to deal him at the deadline if we need. Ship Campbell with a 1st if we need to. We absolutely need that space for a middle six forward or 6th or 7th d man. Bourgault needs to play on the nhl roster. McLeod should be traded. End of rant.

Well said.. I would add and like to see nurse gone… imo he is a second pairing defenseman at best, and obviously way overpaid. Given the oikers continual issue with cap space and looming big guns re-signing, they should seriously look at dealing him.
Broberg looked solid/ quite impressive really and I think actually helped nurses +\- numbers after stepping in the Dallas series in such a huge spot… he looked quite poised out there.

You give this guy a team with a little more depth and loose a few bad contracts and I think he can have them right back into contention. Honestly the window is open now, they need to bite the bullet on moving some bad contracts even if it costs some assets and even some salary retention slots. You need more support in the bottom six because constantly putting mcdavid and Drai on the ice for 30 min a game isn’t sustainable and it really showed in that last five min of game seven where both of them could barely even skate.

Seravalli and Bob Stauffer sound confident negotiations have already begun and McDavid, Draisaitl, and Bouchard will sign extensions totaling $40m.
Our top line is set. Holloway will re-sign and play with Draisaitl. Kane may need to be traded for a winger who can score goals to play with Drai and Holloway. Hopefully we can re-sign Brown and Janmark, Henrique probably costs too much to keep. Maybe Nuge can centre that 3rd line but we'd need another winger for McDavid.
Nurse has a NMC so we're stuck with that contract. Campbell will be bought out for $3m more cap space. We'll probably re-sign Pickard and roll with Skinner+Pickard.
I'm confident we can get the roster sorted and make another push in 24/25.

I do think if Kane was at full health, he could have potentially been a difference maker in that final game (though I still would have found it difficult to believe the Cats would lose two consecutive Stanley Cup Finals).
So I'm hoping he can have a bounce back year, and stay healthy for the playoffs. Obviously he's a good goal scorer, but his physicality was also missed in this series, especially in game seven.
I can see the Oilers opting to shed the Stecher and Perry contracts. The young defencemen stepped up in a big way, and I felt like Knoblauch and Coffey even got Nurse playing much better, and Corey Perry will be 40 by next Playoffs.
However, even shedding those two contracts, and maybe one or two more of the UFAs still doesn't open up much cap space for the Oilers.
It all really depends on Leon. If he is convinced to stay and truly believes the team could win, maybe he will be generous and ask for a short term (maybe 2 years) contract with only a moderate pay increase. Or maybe he'll even accept a cut. But otherwise, if he walks, or asks for a large pay increase, I really don't think there will be much hope for the Oilers, unless their young guys can really step up and bolster their scoring depth. Or if Draissaitl adds hard hitting forechecker to his resume.
I really hope they are able to keep the band together for next year. They were just too close to not get it done now.

I understand it's fun to make fun of the oilers but in reality they're in the best spot they've been in and should be set to seriously contend for the next handful of years.
Oilers front office under Jeff Jackson is already trending in the right direction. For the first time they now have a full analytics department, and hired a coach who now has proven success in playoffs. Under Knoblauch and Coffey, for the first time, their team defense was a strength not a weakness and they got the most out of their depth players.
McDavid and Draisaitl clearly want to win championships and do it together. They will obviously get significant raises, but doubt they will price the team out of contention as they understand how important team depth is.
Their cap situation while not ideal is not nearly as bad as its made out to be. Cap should continue to rise quite a bit over the next few years. They have significant money coming off the books over the next couple of years, at the same time their big names need to be paid. And now with a more modern progressive front office they should be more active/creative in finding ways to add depth players at value.
All in all, sucks to get that close and not win, but they'll be back. The Western conference is trending in the wrong direction too. Dallas while their young players are great, they will need to replace the likes of Benn/Seguin/Duchene eventually, and their defense corps isnt exactly anything special. Colorado will always be competitive but they've been trending in the wrong direction since their cup win where they were able to add a ridiculous amount of depth for that run. Vancouver is improving, but they won't have the cap flexibility going forward to add guys like Lindholm/Zadorov midseason so easily. Vegas will still be a contender, but their core is also only getting older and have no prospects coming up since they always trade them for immediate help. Winnipeg I think is pretty underrated, but im not sure they're serious contenders. The rest of the west is more or less a joke or trending towards rebuild.

I love him but that don’t work on this team. Fogele is going to get around 4 mill open market but if he takes a team friendly at 3 I’d want to keep him. If LA can trade PLD than someone will take Campbell right? I’m sure oil would happily retain too. He has turned his personal life around and is a benifit to the community around him in edmonton. You are the one bringing up race and his past PR so maybe you should look in the mirror for the racist before you start slinging those stones.
Having said all that, Kane WAS a monster in the first half season he was with the oilers but has never been the same player that shut tckachuk down in the playoffs, since the wrist Injury. They should have LTIR him the first trade deadline after he came back to soon, when he sat out a few games for an injury and they should have done the same this season when, by his own words he has dealt with a sports hernia since November. It's a business. I'd take a rusty kane at close to 100% health plus and extra 5 million in deadline acquisitions during the playoffs, over a kane at 40%, who ends up sitting out the last 3 games of the Stanley cup finals.
I don't know why he didn't get the surgery and put in LTIR but it was a mistake that probably could have given the oilers the cup had it been handled differently.

A few adjustments, not major moves. I think the guys have to really work on getting into the game / series right from the start so as not to get behind and end up chasing.
I wouldn't break my neck looking for another goalie. I think Skinner will be just fine. He's not perfect yet; he's still got some work to do, but it's not at all uncommon for newer goalies to take a few years to really hit their stride. He's showing steady improvement and he's a known quantity now so I think there's a lot to be said for stability and continuity.
If the deal of a lifetime falls on their lap then sure, go for it, but I wouldn't be nervous at all about starting next year with Skinner and Pickard, especially with Rodrigue and Fanti in the pipeline.

Campbell is a pretty sweet deal for a buy out. Then you only need 5 of the 10 ufas.brown, foegele, Janmark,Carrick and pickard. Broberg replaces Deharnais. Then ride it out until trade deadline. Players will take less to be on a top contending team.

I have a feeling the price to have someone take Campbell is not going to be exorbitant. Lots of teams with the cap space for those 3 years. Possibly even a smaller bad contract coming back on a potential roster player, like say Goodrow.

I doubt they will make a final again soon. There are too many other up and coming teams that I think will be much better next year. Dallas, I expect Boston will come back strong, rangers too. Carolina will retool
Nurse, Kane and Campbell's contracts will likely hurt the Oilers long term. As for Skinner it's not someone I think that can keep up. The second goal in game seven was pretty weak.

Salaries and cap space is why there is no such thing any more as a perrenial Cup winner or even contender.
Which is why people should have really taken the time to enjoy Edmonton's run...there may not be a Canadian team in the final again for years....if ever.
Financial engineering and shenanigans are now more key to winnng a Cup than the on-ice talent itself.
That is just the sad state of affairs of modern sports.
There will soon be a trophy for the bean counters....mark it down.

Oilers depth is fine. They just need to use it. Whenever a game is close they play the hell out of the top line and bench the other three lines. The “other” lines played well in the final and got great results but were not utilized enough in close games. You can’t exhaust you top line and then wonder why they are dragging their ass at the end of the game.

The temptation to put the two big guns out there next to each other when you're in need of offense is just too great regardless of whoever is behind the bench. They need to have faith in 4 lines and not just when the going is good.

I'd love to see the Oilers bringing back the Skinner Pickard tandem. However I do acknowledge that the guys in front of the net would play with even more confidence if they had a Bobrovsky kind of goalie. Bringing in a new goalie is a massive gamble. First you would need to find one who is a clear upgrade over Skinner, there is not many of those and they are extremely pricey (Nashville wanted a kings ransom for Saros even tho he had a little bit of a down year). Oddly enough one candidate that comes to mind is this "other guy" from Nashville.

Nurse has a No Movement Clause, and considering Edmonton is currently a contender for a cup, he's definitely not moving himself out anytime soon. Oilers are stuck with Nurse for a longgggg time unfortunately, and will probably be in rebuild mode by the time Nurse is on his way out.

It would take a miracle (trading Campbell and/or Nurse) for the Oilers to bring back a team as good as the one they had last season, with that many players to sign with that little salary cap space, and with a lot less time before free agency to get it done because they went to game 7. If they can't move out Campbell or Nurse or both, they're probably taking a step back next season, and focus on signing Draisaitl to make it even harder to have depth after that. Playing Broberg in the playoffs means they might not have enough cash to resign him and are forced to trade him. It doesn't make much sense to bury Campbell in the minors if the not much savings is washed away by now having to pay another backup goalie, but it might take more than just a 1st round draft pick to move that albatross of a contract.

We need to give Olivier Rodrigue a chance next year, let pickard hold up the condors, get campbell moved regardless of the cost, or buy him out. Maybe get a 4th string goalie as back up for pickard in ahl but give the kid his fair shot next year. Hes been very very good in the ahl.

Offense isn’t really an issue for them. Let’s be honest they could have had like 3 or 4 goals in game 7 if not for some great desperation saves by floridas defensemen and goalie. I don’t think goaltending was an issue either. Maybe they should look for a nikko mikkola type of defenseman that can shut things down.

  • @shaunjensen571
    @shaunjensen571 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

I think they need to try Campbell out again next year (then maybe pray there is an expansion draft soon), and see if most of the season in the minors helps his headspace. Also, the confidence in Skinner could take some pressure off. Nurse is a bigger issue with that cap hit. Any trade is a high value contract for high value contract. Maybe Pittsburgh would give up Karlsson. Lol. This next season, they will need to rely more on their farm system and maybe a couple of PTOs. I see Janmark and Deharnais staying. The others are more of a challenge, I would like to see henrique stay too Warren too but I don't think there is the cap space after a couple of signings. Broberg is a big question mark to me. He might have looked good in the final but keep in mind he sat in the Press box for the better part of 3 rounds. The didn't bring him up during the later part of the season because they couldn't give him 20 mins of ice time a game, will it still be an issue?

They are going to need to find some way to work around not just this off season, but next year with Bouchard, Drai extensions… idk how they do it.
End of day, when the game was 1-1, Bouchard came half a foot wide of scoring a goal that I think would of meant they won the cup in my opinion, it always felt like a first to 2 game….Game of inches, but idk if the stars will align for them again

The Oilers could use a bit of youthful exuberance.half of Jack Campbell's contract might create cap space to retain some players.

    • @bradleyhenry2411
      @bradleyhenry2411 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

You'd get a better cap hit if you buyout Campbell vs 50% retention. A healthy Kane is worth his contract, solid physical winger with 20-30 goal potential. I hope that 3rd line returns.
