Back on The Road - Daihatsu Cuore Avanzato TR-XX R4 Project Episode 18

  • With the MOT passed, it's time to see what my Daihatsu Cuore Avanzato TR-XX R4 project car is actually like to drive. Here's some of my first impressions.
    Thanks to Lewis from Car And Mechanical for assistance with filming this video.
    / carandmechanical1
    The FAQs:
    "So this is a Mira, right?"
    Yes, sort of. It is basically identical to the L500 (specifically, the L512S) Daihatsu Mira TR-XX Avanzato R4.
    "Don't Mighty Car Mods have one of these?"
    Again, sort of. They're a very close relative of the Daihatsu MCM's Marty is a big fan of. The car in their Kei To The City film (and Marty's later conversion project) share much of this car's DNA.
    "Didn't Regular Car Reviews drive one of these?"
    Yes! On the RCR UK trip, they drove an almost identical UK-spec Cuore Avanzato. I actually met the owner at the RCR UK meetup. It's actually my Suzuki Cappuccino that they mention in the video about the meet.
    "What does Cuore Avanzato even mean, anyway?"
    It's Italian, actually. "Cuore" means "Heart", and "Avanzato" means "Advanced".
    "I drove one of these in Gran Turismo, and it said it was front wheel drive, not all wheel drive?"
    They did 2WD/FWD versions of the turbo Miras in Japan, too, the "4" in the name is what denotes the AWD/4WD/4x4 version.
    "Is it a kei car?"
    Yes, it meets the kei car regulations, though whether it "counts", being a UK car, is an interesting question.
    "Is it JDM?"
    No, it's a UK model, there are some subtle differences/modifications for the UK market, though nothing earth shattering.
    "Did they really only make 80 of them?"
    Of the UK road car version, yes, give or take a couple, plus there were about 20 rally-prepared ones. The Japanese equivalent is far more common.
    "Is it a 3 cylinder engine?"
    No, it's a 4 cylinder, the Daihatsu JB-JL 16v engine, though it meets the same 660cc capacity limit for kei cars that the three cylinders used elsewhere do.
    "Is it turbocharged?"
    Yes, with a small top-mount intercooler.
    "How does the AWD work?"
    There is a selectable drive to the rear coming off the gearbox, with a viscous coupling between the rear differential and the propshaft to allow for the difference in wheel speeds when cornering.
    "How much does it weigh?"
    768kg, per the UK original specification sheet.
    "Where can I get one?"
    To be perfectly honest, it's a lot easier to find a JDM one as an import than a UK car, but if you keep an eye on Ebay and forums, one might come up.
    "Is it for sale?"
    I'm afraid not, no.

    Watched the whole build, great job mate. i dont even know why the average views were around 2000, you shouldve gotten much more attention, these are solid videos, professionally executed and fixed, greatly edited. nevertheless. i'm expecting more great content since i've just subbed :)

      Don't even worry, ChrisFix (famous TH-cam car mechanic) uploads a project update once a month, you uploaded 18 episodes over the span of 5 months! 18/5 is around 4 videos.
      You uploaded x4 times more content than him, both of you share great info about how to fix the cars you're working on. Anyways Dave I believe your channel will blow up soon, don't forget us when you're famous ;)

    I'm watching this 6 years after the even and have thoroughly enjoyed the journey. I nearly purchased one in 1998 I really wish I had. There's one on ebay that is very tempting but has subframe rust causing an MOT failure but I love a challenge. Brilliant little car

      Thanks! Yes, a lot of people recommend sourcing Daihatsu parts from Malaysia, Indonesia, or the Philippines, because they're popular there. The stopped selling the cars here a few years ago, so it's a bit more difficult to get things.

    I just finished the whole build and it was really entertaining to watch. You do a better job at editing and delivering than some people who have hundreds of thousands of subscribers. Your workmanship is excellent, and you don't let discontinued parts get in your way. I have yet to see anyone else use a 3D printer to make car parts. I look forward to what ever else you have in store.

    Great video Dave,
    My name Jason, from Malaysia.. currently I'm owning a Perodua Kancil converter to L512 (aka JBJL),
    It's really a fun car as it's my first ride unitl today..
    The best part is,, after converting the halfcut JBJL auto transmission,, the whole ride become more fun & alive.
    And I hope in future, we can exchange more idea about kei-car modification.
    And hope u may create more videos about your ride .. cheers bro .. 👍

    "while masking how quickly you're aren't actually going"... BWAHAHAHA!!!
    Sounds like it might be due for a set of new shocks? Might tighten up the suspension nicely. Maybe buying/making polyurethane bushings for some bonus points?

    • @InitialDave
      @InitialDave  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It doesn't feel too wallowy to me, and despite the age, it's only done 35k, so the suspension seems to be in reasonable condition. Freshening things up probably wouldn't hurt, but I don't believe it's actively necessary quite yet, so it's one of these things where I might have a poke at it in the future.
      If I needed to replace any bushes, my preference would normally be for rubber ones, as it's not going to be used hard, and my intent was to keep the car pretty much standard, or at least only make minor/reversible modifications.

    The displacement and rev range remind me of a motorcycle engine.

    • @benwagstaff8990
      @benwagstaff8990 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      im actually pretty sure suzuki ones were based off bike engines and were very similar. the turbo was added because it made it a fair bit more driveable. the short stroke but large bore kinda cuts the torque down. pretty sure the cappuccino had an identical bike engine. even higher rev limit on those, think the red area starts on the clocks at around 10.5k-11k rpm. so the limiter is probably 12k! 0.0
      honda's are the same. the B and K series were designed with the same principles, short stroke, big bore.... good if you like lots of revs.

      Cheers! Yeah, it's on the list, as is a more general rustproofing session around the car, but I need the weather to warm up for it to be practical. I haven't been taking the car out on the salted roads, though, so a little bit of a wait won't hurt it.

    • @InitialDave
      @InitialDave  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm probably going to keep it pretty much standard, I think, as the UK market ones are much rarer, I'd rather not do anything not easily reversible.

    Brilliant glad to see it on the road do you have an FB or messaging site and was wondering can I find K cars like that in the UK and would it be cheaper for my insurance cause I'm 18

    • @InitialDave
      @InitialDave  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, if you're interested in Kei cars in the UK, Kei Cars In The Park is likely the best place to start asking. They have a forum and a good number of knowledgeable people for the various brands. Stuff crops up for sale there too.
      I will say that, at 18, I'm afraid your insurance is going to be pretty eyewatering on most things. My advice would just get quotes from the comparison sites on absolutely everything you can think of, and see if anything crops up as being particularly cheap compared to others.

    How tall are you and how would you say the room is in the car? I'm really quite tall so I'd be worried about room in a little car like that

    • @InitialDave
      @InitialDave  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm 6'2"-6'3", it's not too bad in height terms, but big legs can be awkward, I find the smaller steering wheel helps there, gives a bit more room around your thighs. Pedals are a bit tight with large feet, but ok if you wear trainers rather than boots.

      spankmeister it's probably a little smaller than I'd strictly prefer, but I'm a big guy, and it helps with the room available in a small cockpit. About an inch larger in diameter would be a good compromise.

    I guess they gave it that gearing to compensate for the hp. It's too bad I think. Would be more versatile with higher gears.

      @InitialDave  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's more because of the rev range, it doesn't really have cruising gearing up top, but it doesn't need it, as it'll pull the revs to do the motorway speeds. As far as compromises go, given the restriction of a 5-speed 'box, it makes sense.
      You don't want to be lugging it around at 2k rpm anyway - think in bike terms for revs.

    peel of the sticker for mph and keep it original km

    • @InitialDave
      @InitialDave  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Would just be annoying, as speeds are in mph here, plus you'd need to recalibrate it back to kph somehow.

      @Kuldeep_Giri 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +InitialDave no one other than you is going to see speeds in that speedometer but that sticker in instrument cluster is looking not good i would say and it is already peeling anyhow..... But the matter of fact is i am a MCM fan and somehow i ended upon your channel and i loved the content here so please keep the good work up

    Can you just go out and have some random person make new license plates for your car as long as they are the same numbers and letters? Here plates are made in prisons and issued by the state.
