  • This paper by Harvey Lovewell, presented at the ANZMRC Conference in Dunedin in 2022, explores the requirement of belief in a Supreme Being for Masonic membership. It delves into historical and contemporary perspectives on this belief, examining its implications within Freemasonry's constitution and practices. The paper challenges traditional views, suggesting a re-evaluation of the role of religious belief in Masonic membership and highlighting the evolving societal beliefs. It also addresses the philosophical and moral aspects of belief, urging consideration of inclusivity and moral compass over strict religious adherence. As it is quite a lengthy work, it will be presented in two parts. Thanks to Brother Lovewell for providing this essay and for his permission to reproduce it here.

I just wanted to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude for all that you’ve done for Masonic knowledge. Another great educational video.

Now that I am a Master Mason and have completed my proficiency, I cannot help but reflect on some of the arcane language. I know the context of the obligation and understand it as it was intended. But, I also realize that if you placed some of the words into a different context Masonry could be excluding good men. Food for thought.

3:30 mins in I already had a problem... Does dependence on and love for a Supreme Being actually mean you need to worship it ? The answer is perhaps religious and hence beyond Freemasonry. Then 6 mins I almost stopped watching...
I am not a fan of this paper so far and it works from a point that Belief in a Supreme Being is a moral qualification. It's not a moral qualification but a philosophical or world view or cosmological one or perhaps more rightly, a qualification of Faith. Faith is irrational and cannot be proved and our definition of what that Faith should be, is very broad. and while religious belief is a useful tool to quickly qualify those with a Belief in a Supreme Being, you do not need to be Religious to become a Freemason (I will be checking various versions on Anderson to see if he wrote "Religion" or "religion" in which we all agree and if that's contextually important in his works (also knowing who he was)
Then the author goes on to say Anderson's Freemasonry in the 1700's was an economic elite. Maybe, but certainly not true in Scotland or The Antients. As I said, I had problems with this paper early on... but that's okay and it is always interesting to get other view points..
I will be listening to next week's and interesting to see if a Straw Man has been set up in Part 1 and search for bias which seem to be in this paper.

I think that love and worship are personal acts. Worship can be as simple as an act of kindness. Love can be just a feeling. I am not sure faith is irrational. Faith is just having confidence or trusting something without actually testing or proving it. I think we do this all the time. It is a shame the word "faith" has so much religious baggage associated with it. It is certainly rational for me to have faith that my car will start when I need to drive. Just my thoughts - B∴ Jim.

@@JimJWalkerAbraham was quite faithful & seems morally repugnant to those still applying logic to the story & not to those who feel kinship toward him. The religious are most of those who have moral relativism based on their tribe. I would rather burn in hell than to condemn my son. If anything Abraham doomed us all with his weakness & fear.
