  • Growing your own onion sets is a great thing if you are someone who uses them. This is because the seed suppliers will sell you onion sets at the price it would cost to buy a whole bag of full sized onions, So you are not getting anywhere with that method, however with making your own onion sets, you now can grow your own onions, at home, organically, for a fraction of the price!

Way cool! I accidentally did just this! I started more onion seeds than I could get transplanted this year. I have a tray of slumped over onions that eventually got neglected and not watered. Now I will have about 100 onion sets for next year. How awesome.

Sharon Hoyes I never said that onions started from sets do not store, I said onions that form a scape ( seed stalk) do not store, and they do not. The sets have a higher chance of going to seed than growing from seed does, and that was my only point. But to each his own, whatever works for you!

Very good , I collected onion seeds from an onion I let flower last year, first time. Sowed half and they are viable little plants so I will follow your method and grow sets, super free.

Thanks for the video. I'm new to seed saving. I have these onion seeds that I want to grow sets to specifically harvest for seed next year. The rest of the seed I'll grow out to see if it's an onion that I like. This sounds like a better plan than taking up garden space. Thanks!

Thanks for this video. I grew my own onion sets from seed last year. And am going to experiment this year. I am in zone 2 and have a short growing period and a challenging part shade garden. I get only morning sun and a couple hours of afternoon sun in just a corner of my yard. I also have only a patio and grow in containers. My green onions and leeks did fabulously but the bulb onions remained very small. So I am going to plant them this year and see what happens. If they go to seed and don't cure properly I will freeze and dehydrate my harvest and collect seed of course. I'm feeling hopeful as I grew an onion last year that had sprouted in my pantry. It did great at first and then the greens died back and I thought it was done. What I was hoping for was to get seeds but it didn't flower. To my surprise in the fall when I dug it up I actually had 2 twin onions. They weren't huge but were quite tasty. I just love surprises like that.

Many thanks for that very informative video, I normally use Japanese onion sets for over wintering and seeds for spring planting. You can quite often get onion seeds reduced at the end of the season to clear, so these would be ideal for growing into sets for the following year.
Have you ever tried growing from your own seed stock?

Well that was really informative. This was my first year growing onions (from seed) but I had also planted one onion from the store I had that had sprouted and the plant grew vigorously, only to suddenly go to seed as you said it would (it wasn't even a set). It produced nothing, obviously. The seed onions are doing great so far and starting to turn to bulbs, so I'm looking forward to harvesting them later this year. Thanks for an informative video and channel.

Hi, it looks like nobody answered you on this, but with the understanding that I'm no master gardener, here's my experience. Due to sequences of weird weather I have twice had a patch of about thirty onions bolt. They hadn't got far into the process, just the top of the 'leaf' started to swell. I didn't really have anything to lose so I just chopped the top seed parts off. The bulbs' swelling were a little slower than usual, but it worked and I didn't lose any of them.
I don't know what the official word is on this method, but for me it worked. Happy gardening. :-)

I don't understand onions at all! Which for some reason makes me think of Shrek. I don't know where I'm going wrong. First, I thought it was not enough fertilizer and poor soil combo. Now, I 'am growing in both a large pot and in good soil. Have tried buying local sets and planting from seed. It is a crazy disaster. HUGE greens, with beautiful fennel-like folds and no bulbs whatsoever. Season isn't over, so I'm just awaitin', but 4 or 5 plants went to seed. I am confused as to whether I should plant long-day or short day onions in Florida. Can you recommend a type for me to purchase that will work. Or, tell what I'm doing wrong?

    • @maxdecphoenix
      @maxdecphoenix 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The genus Allium is FUCKING HUGE, and people will refer to virtually every species in it as 'onions'. There are big onions, there are small onions, there are bulb onions, there are leaf onions. There are red onions, white onions, yellow onions. etc
If you are having unexpected results you need to first verify exactly what it is you planted, and that the seeds or sets you planted are of a variety which will produce the type of onion you want. As far as growing them, onions are not hard to manage, most require almost no care, and unless you live in a desert will get by just fine on rain water once or twice a month.
Green onions or scallions are a perennial onion which are harvested for their scapes (leaves) and, for some people, the white part close to the roots. These do not bulb up significantly if at all.
You have to know what you want. Do you want BIG carving onions like in the stores, do you want small onions for dicing or canning? Do you want leaf onions for garnish, spice, soup greens like shallots, chives, or scallions?
Also, don't use sets. It's like planting hamburger in hopes to harvest a cow. Sets represent a year's growth. Especially if you want bulb onions, which are harvested in the first year. All a set will do is put it's energy into going to seed, because it is in its second season. The only use for sets, is to get a mass of cheap seed. That's it. If you're hoping for large, huge grocery store onions, you will not get them from a set as Large onions are grown that season from seed.
The growth cycle of most types of onions, bulb/non-bulb from seed is: the seed germinates, growth emerges from Bud 'A' in spring and produces vegetation. Towards summer and fall, that vegetation dies back and a bulb develops. Inside the bulb, the onion is creating new apical buds B,C,D which it will use in subsequent years. This is the point where most 'bulb' onions are harvested for commercial sale. Also this is when sets are pulled to be sold. If left in ground over winter, the following year Bud A will send up another set of vegitation which is somewhat different from the previous seasons scape. This scape is to produce flowers and seed. The seed should be viable by early summer. Bud 'A' then completely dies. Winter sets in, then spring. It's now the third year. Growth will then emerge from bud 'B' or 'C' and the process will repeat just as it did in the first season. If you want seeds, buy sets. If you want to harvest 'fruit' that season, then you'll need to buy seeds. And from those seeds, if you just leave some plants to over winter in the ground, they will seed the following year. And you need to make sure that the variety you plant in the first place, will produce the type of result you expect anyway.

Don't forget a lot of people outside the US watch these videos, and many locations don't get the choice you do in the USA. My wee plot is in a commercial growing area where there's virtually nothing available smaller than a sack of seeds or tools smaller than a tractor. I asked for onion sets, but ended up having to explain what they were - much to everyone's amusement ("You need WHAT?").
Ok, frustrating at times, but great fun learning and I'm grateful to this video for saving me several failures.

Since onion sets are basically just small onions...would fully grown onions also work as sets? And if not, where's the cutoff point, approximately? Also, can you create a set from a set, or since they're biannuals, would the plant grown from the set be the end of the life cycle, and its bulbs not produce more life at that point?

    • @MIgardener

Where do you get onion sets for so cheap? Where I live you get a bundle of 25 sets for $5-$6. So 200 sets cost about $40. It’s cheaper to buy onions at the store and you don’t have to work all summer to get a harvest. I’ve been successful growing onions from sets but not from seed and am about to give up because it isn’t cost effective here.
