  • Who plants onions in Fall and who plants onions in Spring? Well, it depends on where you live. What kind of onions do you plant? Well, it depends on where you live.
I'll break it all down to a simple formula in this video. Plus because onions take a while to produce, and in the meantime take up valuable garden real estate... I'll show you some good crops to interplant with them to save space and make the most out of your garden beds.

I have not purposely raised onions but had some "fun" with garlic and some Wild Ramps. We rented a house for many years and the old man (and original owner,) that lived there before did loved ramps and garlic. The garlic was in a large patch by his shed and it grew like crazy. His ramps were all over the yard. I think he was eating them while he was outside and just tossing the leftovers back in the yard or something because they were everywhere. I tried to mow the yard to cut back the garlic a bit and remove the ramps but no matter what I did, every time I mowed that yard it smelled like an Italian salad.

Zone 8b...I winter sow my onion seeds every November. I collect 9 tp rolls, place them in a milk jug and fill with potting soil. Add 10 to 15 seeds per roll and dust the top with a little more soil. Moisten and toss out to the elements to sprout when the days get brighter. I transplant to my raised beds in April.

In spring I increase nitrogen until my onions start to bulb. Each leaf on your onion is one ring of the bulb so I incourage leaf growth. I also trim bent over leaves.

I am in Tacoma so I have to plant long day onions, ironically I bought seeds from a company here in the PNW last year and they all bolted, I suspect that they were short day onions, why they sell them in my area I will never know but it was frustrating, LOL. One other note, the best results will come from using fresh seed packed for the current year, onion seeds do not store well, I also dried some tiny bulbs to use as my own sets this year, but plan to buy seeds and starts if I can get them, last year was a tough year for getting supplies---I prefer red onions myself, so concentrate on those. I also like spring onions and had a good crop last year interplanted with Florence fennel, that worked out well.

So, yeah man, I’ll get on it now, get some seed ordered, cheers, happy gobble gobble!

When you buy green onions at the market you can cut off about 1/4” off the root end and re-plant. It will grow into another spring onion in a few weeks. It will not form a bulb but it works great for regenerating green onions.

You’re right! I see Walla Walla onion seed at most of the nurseries and big box stores. I also see onion sets that won’t grow globe onions. I put in Red Creole, Yellow Granex and Texas Legend this year all from seed in cell flats. I’ve found this method will kick start growth vs starting from onion plants for instance. We plant on 3” centers and pick every other one for Spring onions. Thanks for the informative video, one of your best! I like the interplanting idea a lot.

You nailed the details here. You also want to put a trench of nutrients in between onion rows.
As for intermediate zone, you can grow short day. Where you plant in garden you will need to know hours of sunlight. If your bed is only good for 10-12 hours of light, short day is better.

Since this is a year old video, you've probably already discovered this so apologies if you already know but onions are not a root crop. The bulb is actually a modified leaf and it's Nitrogen that helps leaf development. I always thought they were root crops too until last year.

I'm in southern Kentucky and according to most growers specifications I am on the border for Northern and southern onions and so I could potentially grow all 3 types. 14 hr long days are the trigger for walla walla sweets to bulb. That occurs about the first week of June at my house. I'm pretty sure that you could grow long and intermediate day onions, but the intermediate would begin to bulb before the long day and will probably end up a bit smaller.

Nice video. As always, very informative, but now I have a couple of QUESTIONS:
    1) you were talking about the importance of using phosphorus when planting and then half way through you said to stop using the nitrogen. Please clarify when do you use the nitrogen and phosphorus. Or is it just nitrogen or just phosphorus?
2). I live in the long day growing area of the map. So does that mean I can grow any kind of onion since I would have enough daylight? I have areas in my garden, like yours, that get shaded during parts of the day. So can I plant the short day or intermediate onions in those areas? If so, what is the minimum number of hours of sunlight does short day onions need and the same with the intermediate onions?
Thank you, in advance, for your reply. I look forward to reading it and growing onions this year. I tried to grow some 3 years ago from seed but nothing grew. Not a single one. I’d like to give it a try again this year.

Depends on how you grow the tomatoes. If you do a vertical trellis, you can grow onions really close by. I do the square foot method and get a lot of production in tomatoes and the crops grown next to it.

If you’re growing onions from seed it’s best to start them in flats that have individual cells. Plant seeds about 1/8” (3mm) deep and keep well-watered. You should see green growth in about 10 days. Grow in flats for about 6 weeks and fertilize every 2 weeks with 20-20-20 water soluble at 1/2 the recommended concentration. You can trim the green growth if it gets too tall. Transplant into your garden. I’m guessing You should be planting short day varieties but don’t take my word on that. Good short day options are yellow granex and red creole.

I have some growing in my indoor cold crop garden that I started by seeds! They’re doing great! But because they are a long day onions, I’m going to switch my indoor lighting over them from bright white lights (6400k) to warm full spectrum (3000k) and see if they start setting their bulbs. They been growing in this indoor garden since August. 🤞

Hey I'm in 6a Indiana and i planted my onions in spring but they didn't do well, but now they are starting to bloom. Should I pull them out or leave them be? They are not quite ready, can they be replanted in spring?

    • @amberweinmann9441
      @amberweinmann9441 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

If they are blooming you won't be able to harvest for food. But they make great companion plants because they repel bad insects and attract pollinators and predators to those tiny blossoms. They can easily be transplanted to plant throughout the garden if desired

So I am extremely left-brained and am number-centric. Why can you plant short day onions in November where you are? Is there a number of days before/after/during frost times that it is good to plant them? I write everything I need to do each month on a calendar and I want to make sure I'm estimating appropriately.

From my research I found that it doesn't affect people with allergies after it is broken down and in the plant. Look around and see if you find the same.
