The Drifters music really spoke to the blue collar crowd. They wrote love songs for people who were not the upper echelon of society. They sung of falling in love “under the boardwalk,” and a paradise “up on the roof” where the stars put on a show for free.
Fellas couldn’t wait to take their girls out for “ Saturday Night at The Movies” to be in the back row of the balcony not caring what picture you see.
They sung of not having one thin dime to shine your shoes On Broadway.
Or remembering a summer love that’s gone when you discover the Sand inside Shoes after the weather has turned cold. The Drifters were the common people’s juke box that always told their stories and brought dignity to them.

The Drifters were one of the early 50's doo-wop R&B groups. They had a lot of great songs such as "There Goes My Baby", "Save The Last Dance For Me", "This Magic Moment", "Some Kind Of Wonderful", "Please Stay", "On Broadway". Ben E. King was in the group at one time but left for a solo career in the 60's. He had a big hit with "Stand By Me" & "Spanish Harlem".

So, true story. I remember this from when I was 3 years old in 1963. I get emotional when I hear it. Great song. I guess it had come out years earlier.

The Drifters, The Coasters, Little Anthony and the Imperials, The Four Tops The Temptations, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles - so many great groups back then!

I also recommend reacting to James Taylor's cover of this song which is a slower beat. They are both great ❤️💯

Probably their most popular song of the '60s was 1964's "Under the Boardwalk". I'm guessing you may have heard it already, Stan. It's literally one of the most popular and played songs of the decade of the '60s. Another Drifters classic is the follow-up to "Under the Boardwalk", 1964's "Saturday Night at the Movies." Great stuff.

More proof, if any was needed, that composer Carole King is a genius.

Please Please Please react to Clyde McPhatter singing You'll Be There. He was in the Drifters before Ben E. King was

No engineering wizardry needed. Church backgrounds, street corner under the streetlamp harmony. Black music.

Nope standard street corner doo wop. Blacks and Italians were both big into it. I would suggest that color ain't got nothing to do with it.

Back before auto tune, when talent could pull your strings on a warm summer’s night, playing over the A.M. radio in your 50’s something first car. Steering with your left hand, your right arm around your girl snuggled close on the long front seat. (No bucket seats back then). …. sigh …
