Glad to see you’re back. Hope life’s been treating you well. Also I can’t recommend ORAS enough. I believe them and Sun/Moon to be the last truly great games in the series before the switch era.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone give Sun and Moon such a glowing review, but they deserve it! They’re tied for #1 w/ Platinum for me. The enhanced story and visuals of the Ultra games is incredible! Hope to see more stuff soon! Subbed!
My take on Switch games: there’s something to enjoy about all of them, but I was really underwhelmed by Sword and Shield. Loved the roster additions, and the gimmick was fine, but gen 8 was when I noticed how lazy and outdated some of GameFreak’s game design was. Derpy character models and animation for the player character and NPCs really held back the game from feeling polished and immersive. Such a shame since the music and theming is always really top notch. Gen 9 was a vast improvement with regards to scope and overall feel, but still had some of those same symptoms…not to mention the bugginess. But it was so much more fun to play compared to Gen 8. And I thought the story was stronger overall. Legends Arceus, while a bit rough and still has the derpy character animation, is so refreshing that it helped me look past some of the aforementioned laziness…somewhat. Let’s Go Pikachu/Eevee was the first Pokémon game I ever returned to the store. As a lifelong and current pokemon fan…it was not for me. EDIT: great list and commentary! Loved your top 3 especially.
Thanks for giving your takes! I’m nervously anticipating playing these Switch games, been holding them off for so long. Once I take the leap though at least a couple will get full fledged reviews for sure. It’s super easy to capture on Switch as well!
Great list, not surprised to see Gen 5 up high and I agree that it deserves to be there. I’m surprised that Platinum doesn’t hold your attention for long, Sinnoh is so enchanting for me that every new play through feels captivating. But that’s all it is, surprise, and I don’t think you’re wrong. Gen 4 can feel very ‘dense’ to play especially with the speed of the game (or lack thereof).
First time playing through absolutely loved the game. When I think about which games I’d replay, I’d take that top 5 over it, and that’s what it really came down to. Thanks for watching!!
I love it when Pokemon Sun and Moon get some attention. I honestly dont understand why so many people dont like them, for me these are also Top 5 Games. They have some of the best pokemon, a cool region, a great story and they did new things. And you should defenetly try ORAS, for me these games are almost as good as HG/SS as a remake.
S&M to me don't make the list. I agree that the region design was awesome and the Pokémon themselves were great additions! I loved the trials. The thing holding it back for me is the handholding. You can't enter a new area or you're forced into tonnes of dialogue, needless exposition dumps and it felt so restrictive. You've got such an amazing region with so much potential only for the exploration to be put on hold with the above. So frustrating...

I feel like most of you younger players put waaaay too much stock in B/W being one of the best. Its the same problem that genwunners have: Nostalgia goggles. As a whole the narrative is better than most but thats about it. As a person whos childhood game was Blue version i can honestly say that B/W disappointed me to the point of not playing a Pokemon game until ORAS. I did go back and play X/Y (bleh) and B2/W2 (surprisingly enjoyed) but doesnt change the fact B/W is one of the worst imo
It’s not nostalgia. People always say this about gen 5, but it’s nonsense. The praise has been around for several years now, but the games only came out two years before X/Y. Where’s all the “X/Y are the best games” dialogue?
@cuck1ngfunt I would say it's because there was a big push for the generation at the time to get into Pokémon that B/W became their first game and comparatively X/Y was a bit of a step back in story and challenge. I'm not saying the game doesn't have its merits but compared to the entirety of the series I just feel it lacks in a lot of ways.
You should definitely try playing all of the mainline games you have not yet. They all offer really unique and fun experiences, including the switch games. Imo the switch games are absurdly over hated, just like how Gen 5 was hated for years when it first came out, and so was Gen 6, and so was gen7, soon gens 8 and 9 will be remembered as really good. Because they are great games, and if you like Sun and Moon, you will love Ultra Sun Ultra Moon. It's like sun and moon but with a phenomenal post game and even more cool stuff.
The rest of the mainline games will be on the review horizon hopefully. I can totally see the comparisons between Switch hate and old BW hate. I should leave behind my boomer ways and give them a try. Legends looks like a lot of fun though I might start with that even though it’s a spin-off. Thanks for watching man!
Respectfully, X and Y are the best games but I can understand your choice of black n white 2 at the top. They're pretty good, but I feel like x and y just have more pizzazz and they're easier to enjoy.
Definitely easier to enjoy! Those were MY childhood games man i probably had over 300 hours on X learning about IV breeding and grinding shinies. Love those games.

It does have some handholding I can agree with you there. The QOL improvements it introduced make a difference to me though.
